Comentário: Pérola vinda da Hungria e cujas informações são praticamente inexistentes na internet. Lançaram um único LP e outros dois compactos pelo selo estatal Pepita. Alguns de seus membros seguirem breve carreira solo ou ingressaram em outros grupos.
Neste debut ouvimos 10 curtas faixas que mesclam hard rock simples e country/ blues do sul dos EUA, que vivia seu auge na época (algo pouco usual para bandas 'oficiais' da cortina de ferro). As guitarras guiam o instrumental, acompanhadas por animada seção de metais, percussão e piano, em solos que rivalizam em quase todas as canções. As letras são todas em húngaro e geralmente cantada em coro. Surpreendente e interessante registro para fãs de country, especialmente pela localidade.

Sprint was a band from Hungary and almost no information is available on the internet. They released one rare LP and two singles by the state label Pepita. Some of its members follow a brief solo career or join other groups.
In this self-titled debut we hear 10 short tracks mixing hard rock and country / blues from the Southern bands of the time (something unusual for 'official' bands of the Iron Curtain). The guitars guide the instrumental, accompanied by exciting section of metals, percussion and piano, in solos that rival in almost all the songs. The lyrics are all in Hungarian and usually sung in chorus.

Comentário: Janus (não confundam com outras bandas de mesmo nome) foi uma obscuridade máxima vinda do Japão, cujas informações conhecidas estão disponíveis apenas no encarte do seu único LP, lançado de forma independente em 1978, porém todas em japonês. Hoje é um raríssimo exemplar do rock nipônica, ainda sem novo relançamento.

O álbum é dividido em 9 faixas curtas de hard rock simples e direto típico do final da década, liderado pelo trabalho sólido da guitarra, seguida pelo sintetizador e piano, que garantem doses de progressivo e experimentalismo. Os vocais são quase todos femininos, marcantes e com letras em japonês (exceção de 'Dancing Number', música fortemente influenciada por Deep Purple), sendo algumas canções totalmente instrumentais.

Janus (not to be confused with other bands of the same name) was a great obscurity coming from Japan, whose known information is available only in the booklet of their only LP, released privately in 1978, but all in Japanese. Today is a very rare example of Japanese rock, yet without new re-release.
The album is divided into 9 short tracks of straight and simple hard rock typical of the end of the decade, led by the solid work of the guitar, followed by the synthesizer and piano, which guarantee doses of progressive and experimentalism. The vocals are most female, remarkable and with lyrics in Japanese (except for 'Dancing Number', strongly influenced by Deep Purple), being some songs totally instrumental.

Comentário: Formado na Ilha de Wight, sul da Inglaterra, este foi um power trio 'perdido no tempo' e que lançou um raríssimo LP independente, antes de mudar seu nome para Sweet Tooth, já com outros membros. Nos anos 90 voltaram ao antigo nome e lançaram outro disco, porém as informações sobre eles são escassas e os álbuns são impossíveis de achar.

Nesta versão relançada em CD que disponibilizo aqui há 12 faixas curtas (3 bônus em relação a primeira prensagem), possuindo feeling setentista raramente encontrada em bandas de décadas posteriores, bebendo da fonte ácida / psicodélica, além de pinceladas de hard e prog. Pode ser facilmente confundido com alguma obscuridade surgida entre 68-72, caso o ouvinte não saiba a data do lançamento. O instrumental é composto por guitarra distorcida em parceria do violão, bateria, baixo pulsante e até raras passagens de órgão e flauta, variando entre momentos viajantes e enraivecidos, sempre em composições intrigantes e raras músicas 'fracas'.

Excelente e sólida raridade 'revival' dos anos 60/70, altamente recomendado!

Beggars Farm was formed on the Isle of Wight, south of England, as a power trio and released a very rare private LP before changing its name to Sweet Tooth with new members. In the 90's they came back to the old name and released another album, however the information about them is scarce and the albums are impossible to find.

In this version reissued in CD that I make available here there are 12 short tracks (3 bonuses in relation to the first press), with strong 70's feeling, rarely found in bands of later decades, clearly influenced by acid / psychedelic and touches of hard and prog. It can easily be mistaken with some obscurity between 68-72 if the listener does not know the release date. The instrumental is composed of heavy distorted guitar, acoustic guitar, drums, pulsating bass and even rare organ and flute passages, varying between trippy and raw moments, always in intriguing compositions and almost no weak songs. Highly recommended!

Comentário: Um dos grupos mais antigos do rock espanhol, formado em 1959 em Barcelona pelo vocalista Pedro Gené, tocando durante a década de 60 covers internacionais de beat e pop rock. O grupo atravessou várias décadas, encerrando oficialmente as atividades em 2000, após uma quantidade grande de álbuns lançados e músicos envolvidos.
Posto aqui um trabalho de uma fase mais amadurecida no som da banda (iniciada em meados dos anos 70), no qual o quarteto se aproxima do hard rock e progressivo. São 8 faixas que totalizam quase 40 minutos, sendo poucos momentos ruins, todas cantadas em espanhol e com ótimos momentos instrumentais, apesar de sem grande variedade, destacando-se principalmente a dobradinha guitarra e piano / teclados. Pérola recomendada!


One of the oldest groups of Spanish rock, formed in 1959 in Barcelona by singer Pedro Gené, playing during the 60s covers of beat / pop rock groups. 'Lone Star' officially ended activities in 2000, after a large number of albums / singles released and musicians involved.

I post here a work of a more mature phase in the sound of the band (begun in the middle of the 70's), in which the quartet get closer of hard and progressive rock. There are 8 tracks that total almost 40 minutes, with few bad moments, all sung in Spanish and with great instrumental moments, although without great variety, especially with guitar and piano / keyboards.

Comentário: Grupo de Tóquio, ativo na segunda metade dos anos 70 e que lançou apenas um LP, além de abrir um show no país para Judas Priest. Este é um disco de hard rock que lembra nomes como Scorpions e Rainbow, além de pitadas das primeiras bandas da NWOBHM, apesar de ficar longe de uma mera cópia. São 10 curtas e sólidas faixas de hard / heavy bem executado, ora melódico ora agressivo, liderado pelo ótimo trabalho nas guitarras, acompanhando os fortes vocais de Ace Nakaya (com letras todas em japonês). Ótima pérola para fãs de hard e metal setentista.

Hard rock/metal band from Tokyo formed in 1978 and inspired by NWOBHM. Nokemono released this album in ’79 on the SMS (Sounds Marketing System) label and fancied themselves a KISS/Maiden type of band.
Musically this album is all around excellent. It’s exceptionally innovative and stylish, and has a huge NWOBHM feel, despite being such an early album from Japan of all places. Ace’s vocals are very strong, with a similar delivery to Kyoji Yamamoto’s style, but aren’t as hyper, though still smooth and very nearly as good. Cherry’s bass is played to excellence, taking on melodies constantly throughout and driving the music forward with as great of an effect as a bassist can possibly have without overwhelming the other instrumentalists, Popeye’s drums are nimble and and slick and with an added cowbell on certain songs, it contributes largely to From the Black World’s overall catchyness, but perhaps the best of all is the guitar work of Rolla and Buchan, with plenty of fantastic riffs throughout, their guitar tone isn’t one that typically comes to mind for a metal album, as I’m more accustomed to hearing it on the rock albums of the 70s, though it works brilliantly well. The whole band’s chemistry is crazy tight and every member compliments the others.
Excellent later 70’s / early 80’s Japanese Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, second to none (Loudness, Bow Wow, Sabrabells…) but obscure even in Japan. Very good guitar work and some exciting epic instrumental parts á la Rainbow.

Comentário: Banda formada a partir de ex-integrantes do Red Snakes, grupo carioca ativo nos anos 60 e que chegou a lançar um álbum. Sob este nome, lançaram apenas um compacto e participaram do festival Som Livre Exportação, acabando pouco tempo depois. 

"Transição" começa com uma das intros mais pesadas do rock nacional dos anos 70 na guitarra estridente, que é acompanhada posteriormente pelo ótimo vocal, além de bateria e baixo barulhentos e novamente Ronaldo entra, agora no solo matador. "Fuga" é outro hardão setentista de qualidade, porém mais moderado, onde novamente a guitarra assume protagonismo. As letras são em português e seguem um tema bem típico da época, sobre juventude e a vida. Pérola recomendada para qualquer fã de rock nacional dos anos 70, um grupo com muita competência e que poderia ter deixado um LP para a posteridade.

Band formed from former members of Red Snakes, a group from Rio de Janeiro active in the 60's and that released an LP. Under this name, they released only one single and participated of the festival 'Som Livre Exportação', disbanding shortly afterwards.

"Transição" begins with one of the heaviest intros of the 70s Brazillian rock with the strident guitar, which is later accompanied by the vocal, as well as drums and bass and again Ronaldo enters, now in a killer solo. "Fuga" is another great hard rock, but more moderate, where again the guitar takes center stage. The lyrics are in Portuguese and follow a very typical theme of the time, about youth and life. Agroup with a lot of competence and that could have left an LP for posterity, recommended.

Comentário: Banda formada em 1974 na cidade de Plzeň, antiga Checoslováquia. Apesar de certas restrições pelas autoridades da época, o trio sempre se manteve na ativa, lançando vários LPs e ganhando fama local, hoje tendo apenas Oldřich Říha da formação original.
Posto aqui o debut, gravado ao vivo na capital Praga, dividido em 10 faixas de hard rock, não devendo nada aos grandes nomes do gênero no leste europeu, como Bijelo dugme e YU Grupa. As letras são todas em tcheco e o instrumental é simples, direto e sólido, com domínio das guitarras em riffs e solos marcantes, acompanhadas por boa bateria / baixo e gaita de boca, que garante uma sonoridade mais 'blueseira' em algumas músicas.

Band formed in 1974 in the city of Plzeň, former Czechoslovakia. Despite some restrictions by the authorities of the time, the trio always remained active, releasing several LPs and gaining local fame, now having only Oldřich Říha of the original line-up.

Here is the debut, recorded live in the capital Prague, divided into 10 tracks of hard rock, owing nothing to the big names of the genre in Eastern Europe, like Bijelo dugme and YU Grupa. The lyrics are all in Czech and the instrumental is simple, straightforward and solid, with great guitar work in striking riffs and solos, accompanied by good drums / bass and harmonica, guaranteeing a more 'bluesy' sound in some songs.

Comentário: Grupo formado em 1977 na cidade de Belgrado, atual capital da Sérvia e na época Iugoslávia. Lançaram cinco LPs, tornando seu som na fase final (a partir de 81) para o heavy metal, sendo pioneiro no estilo na região. Posto aqui o debut, dividido em 10 curtas faixas de hard rock, porém com forte influência progressiva. Vocais melódicos, sendo todas as letras em sérvio e instrumental equilibrado entre ótimas passagens de guitarra e teclados se revezando são as marcas principais do disco, que possui poucos momentos fracos.

Group formed in 1977 in the city of Belgrade, present capital of Serbia and former Yugoslavia. They released five LPs, turning their sound in the final phase (from 81) to heavy metal, pioneering the style in the region. Post here the debut, divided in 10 short tracks of hard rock, but with strong progressive influence. Melodic vocals, all lyrics in Serbian and instrumental balanced between great passages of guitar and keyboards taking turns are the main marks of the disc, which has few weak moments.

COUNTRY / HARD ROCK - NOAH - Peaceman's Farm - 1972

Comentário: Grupo de Ontário fundado pelo holandês Barry Vandersel em meados dos anos 60, passando por mudanças de nome e formação, até finalmente serem Noah, lançando assim dois álbuns. A banda acabou prematuramente após a morte do líder em 75, por conta de um câncer. 

Posto aqui o segundo e último disco, com participação de Randy Bachman (ex-The Guess Who), dividido em 10 faixas, sendo algumas voltadas ao hard rock e outras mesclam de forma agradável country, psicodelia e folk rock, em alguns momentos mais melódico (frequentemente comparado com CSNY). O instrumental é simples e guiado pelo ótimo trabalho das guitarras, acompanhada por percussão, baixo e bateria eficientes. O vocal também é outro ponto alto, muito bem harmonizado e encaixado nas canções.

Consistente e bem executado disco, recomendado para fãs de country e hard rock dos anos 70.

Ontario's Noah appear at the midway point. Like a few bands on here, they had support from Randy Bachman who occasionally played 2nd guitar with them live and, along with production duties, allegedly played on parts of the the bands second (and final) album 'Peaceman's Farm' (1972). The album is a mix of rural sounding rock which is perfectly complemented by Paul Clapper's husky vocals as you can hear on 'Something's In the Way'. It is less pop-orientated then their debut, which is still a pretty good record but quite different to Peacaman's Farm, closer to what they recorded under their previous moniker 'Tyme And A Half'. My gripe with this album is that while it's all of good quality, it's weighted a bit to too much towards balladeering, the four or so 'rocking' tracks on it are brilliant and I would have more of them!

Comentário: Obscuridade máxima formada em Leningrado, na antiga URSS e atual São Petersburgo, por ex-músicos de bandas locais já postadas aqui, como Sankt Peterburg (foto acima) e Mifi. Aparentemente esta é a única apresentação ao vivo do grupo de vida curta, cujas gravações foram milagrosamente salvas e hoje rodam a internet, porém sem nenhum lançamento oficial. 

São 5 faixas de composição própria, que trazem um rock clássico beirando o hard e garagem, próximos aos sons das citadas acima. As músicas são cantadas em russo e o instrumental é básico, com guitarra liderando, acompanhada por baixo, bateria e teclado. A qualidade da gravação é novamente um ponto negativo.

Interessante registro para fãs do rock na antiga cortina de ferro.

Top obscurity from USSR, formed in Leningrad and now St. Petersburg, by former musicians from local bands already posted here, such as Sankt Peterburg (photo above) and Mifi. Apparently this was the only live performance of the short-lived group whose recordings were miraculously saved and today run the internet, but with no official release.
There are 5 tracks of own composition, that bring a classic rock with influences of the hard and garage, next to the sounds of the mentioned above. The songs are sung in Russian and the instrumental is basic, with guitar leading, accompanied by bass, drums and keyboard. The quality of the recording is again a negative point.

Comentário: Trio de Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, ativa no começo dos anos 80 e que lançou apenas um raro LP, começando as gravações para um segundo, que infelizmente nunca saiu, ganhando certa popularidade local por conta da Fluminense FM. O homônimo contém 10 curtas faixas que transitam entre o hard, progressivo, psicodelia, bebendo da fonte setentista nacional, porém tendo certa roupagem mais 'moderna'. O instrumental é direto e bem executado, onde a guitarra de Agra domina, com riffs e solos marcantes, acompanhado pela boa 'cozinha', além de alguns momentos acústicos. As letras são todas em português e também bem elaboradas.

Uma ótima pérola do rock brazuca, recomendado para fãs da safra 70/80.

Comentário: Banda norueguesa cujas informações são praticamente desconhecidas, a não ser o nome dos membros e o lançamento deste único single em 1972, pela Experience Records. O guitarrista Robert Birkeland formaria futuramente o grupo Allison. Ambas as faixas presentes no compacto são curtas e cantadas em inglês, trazendo uma pegada influenciada pelo 'hardão setentista', ao estilo power trio, e clássico. Destaque para o trabalho pesado nos riffs e solos de guitarra, acompanhado por baixo marcante e bateria furiosa. Certamente uma banda que tinha capacidade para lançar um álbum completo, mas infelizmente ficou pelo caminho.

Norwegian band whose information is practically unknown, other than the name of the members and the release of this single in 1972 by Experience Records. The guitar player Robert Birkeland would later form the group Allison. Both tracks in the single are short and sung in English, bringing an early 70's hard rock influenced music, power trio style, and classic. Highlight for heavy work on guitar riffs and solos, accompanied by great bass and furious drums. Certainly a band that had the ability to release a full album, but unfortunately got in the way.

Comentário: Formada em Wuppertal em 1969 por jovens que já tocavam em pequenos grupos de garagem da época, o Apple Pie lançou apenas um compacto em 1970 e logo se desfez. Fez parte da compilação Psychedelic Gems décadas depois.

 No lado A ouvimos a música "Ballad Of The Crying Man", destaque do single, que abre com flauta, guitarra e órgão, lembrando Jethro Tull, e se desenrola com guitarra wah-wah e vocais em inglês, quase em um levada de blues. "Maurice" traz uma pegada mais psicodélica e garageira, novamente com destaque para a guitarra pesada. 

Formed in Wuppertal in 1969 by young people already playing in small garage groups of the time, Apple Pie only released a single in 1970 and soon disbanded. It was part of the compilation Psychedelic Gems decades later.

 On the A side we hear the song "Ballad Of The Crying Man", the highlight of the single, which opens with flute, guitar and organ, reminding Jethro Tull, and unfolds with wah-wah guitar and vocals in English. "Maurice" brings a more 60's psychedelic / garage style, again featuring heavy guitar.

Comentário: Pérola vinda da Suíça e cujas informações e nomes dos membros são desconhecidos. Lançaram apenas um raro compacto pela Polydor, contendo as músicas "See Me" e "Desperate Man", ambas curtas, porém trazendo um heavy psych barulhento e direto, típico do começo dos anos 70. Riffs marcantes de guitarra fuzz, bateria 'quebrando tudo' e vocal cavernoso marcam o som, com as letras em inglês. Uma banda com grande potencial, porém que nos deixou apenas esses dois petardos.

Gem coming from Switzerland and whose information and names of members are unknown. They released only a rare compact by Polydor, containing the songs "See Me" and "Desperate Man", both short, but bringing a loud and straight heavy psych, typical of the early 70s. Fuzzy guitar riffs, furious drums and vocals mark the sound, with lyrics in English. A band with great potential, however that left us only those two great songs.

Comentário: Trio formado por ex-membros da lendária banda romena Phoenix em 1978, que buscavam um projeto de maior sucesso comercial. Estabeleceram-se na Alemanha, onde lançaram seu único LP no ano seguinte e se desfazendo em 1980, sem o resultado esperado. O disco é dividido em 10 curtas faixas de hard rock e, como dito, com uma sonoridade mais direta e simples, típica da época. O instrumental é simples, guiado por passagens intensas de guitarra, além de bateria / baixo competentes; o vocal é também rasgado e todo em inglês. A produção infelizmente deixa a desejar.

Apesar de pouco original, ainda é interessante para fãs de hard rock e de música do leste europeu.

Trio formed by former members of the legendary Romanian band Phoenix in 1978, trying to achieve more success in the Western Europe. They settled in Germany, where  their only LP was released and disbanded in 1980, without the expected result. The disc is divided into 10 short tracks of hard rock and, as said, with a more commercial and simple sound, typical of the time. The instrumental is straight, guided by intense passages of electric guitar, besides drums / bass competent; The lyrics are all in English. The production unfortunately disappoints.
Although unoriginal, it's still interesting for fans of hard rock and Eastern European music.

Comentário: Power trio formado em Kyoto, em meados dos anos 70 e cujas informações são restritas. Não chegaram a lançar um trabalho oficial, apenas em 2001 antigas gravações ao vivo da banda foram lançadas em CD. O material totaliza mais de uma hora de heavy psych barulhento e cru, com longas improvisações instrumentais (sendo classificado como Jam band e até noise rock), onde dominam as passagens de guitarra distorcida e bateria 'quebrando tudo'. Os vocais aparecem ocasionalmente, raivosos e com todas as letras em japonês (com exceção do cover de 'I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier').

Uma ótima experiência para fãs de psicodelia nervosa dos anos 70.

Power trio formed in Kyoto in the mid-70's and whose information is restricted. They did not release an official record, only in 2001 old live recordings of the band were released on CD. The material totals more than an hour of noisy and raw heavy psych, with long instrumental improvisations (being classified as Jam band and even noise rock), where acid guitar and heavy drums passages dominate. The vocals appear occasionally, angry and with all the lyrics in Japanese.
A great experience for fans of nervous 70s psychedelic.

Comentário: Grupo formado em Leeds, na Inglaterra, por jovens locais. Lançaram um único e raríssimo álbum de forma privada, posteriormente relançado em CD, mas ainda assim com número limitado de cópias. O guitarrista Duncan McFarlane formaria uma banda com seu nome anos mais tarde. 

O LP abre com a excelente "Horror Suite", de 10 minutos, seguida por outros ótimos momentos, mostrando ser um belo exemplo de rock setentista, que transita entre hard e progressivo, porém com consistência e fortemente instrumental.  O som é frequentemente comparado à Wishbone Ash, pela marcante presença de guitarras duplas, acompanhadas pela 'cozinha' competente. 

Group formed in Leeds, England, by young musicians. They released only one rare album privately, later reissued on CD, but still with limited number of copies. Guitarist Duncan McFarlane would form a band with his name years later.
The LP opens with the excellent "Horror Suite", of 10 minutes, followed by other good tracks, being a great example of 70's rock, that transits between hard and progressive, but with consistency and strongly instrumental. The sound is often compared to Wishbone Ash, for the presence of double guitars accompanied by the competent bass / drums.
