O destaque vai para a belíssima harmonia vocal entre as vozes femininas e a de Paul Kavanagh, impressionante mesmo para admiradores do gênero, acompanhada por um rico e acústico instrumental, que conta com violões, auto-harpa, espineta e outros típicos da música celta, como tin whistle e bodhran.

Hailing from Ferns in Co. Wexford Shades of MacMurrough formed in 1971. They made several appearances on RTE television and released their debut single Julia on Dolphin Records in 1971. Comprised of Mary and Josephine ONeill and Paul Kavanagh they sepcialised in close harmonies and accompanied themselves on 6&12 string guitars,spinet, autoharp, tin whistle and bodhran. Signing to Polydor Ireland in 1972 they recorded their first album Carrig River. Released in 1973 Carrig River features some of the finest poems and ballads from the Irish folk tradition spanning four centuries including Follow Me Up to Carlow, She Moved through the Fair while the title track Carrig River and Courtown Fishermen echo the rich folk traditions of their native Wexford. Shades of Mac Murroughs Carrick River has been long held as an acid folk holy grail and is a mellifluous blend of sublime vocal harmonies and subtle instrumentation.

O LP é baseado em vários covers de canções tradicionais do folk celta, com certa roupagem contemporânea e quase totalmente acústico, utilizando instrumentos típicos, como dulcimer, banjo, concertina e tin whistle, além de violões, que acompanham os vocais e provocam uma bela atmosfera às curtas canções. 

Ótima pedida para fãs de música folk, especialmente celta.

Early '70's hippie Irish folk trio who released this album in 1972. Very much in the "tradition" of the genre the group perform assorted tunes new and old using acoustric instruments such as dulcimer, banjo, Tin Whistle, guitar and concertina. Excellent period folkie artwork as well. Enchanting!

COUNTRY/ FOLK ROCK - JONATHAN KELLY'S OUTSIDE - Waiting On You - 1974

Pérola formada na Inglaterra, como projeto do músico irlandês Jonathan Kelly, contando ainda com os músicos Trevor Williams (ex-Audience), Snowy White (que se tornaria membro do Thin Lizzy anos mais tarde) e Chas Jankel (futuro guitarrista do The Blockheads). O grupo durou pouco tempo, lançando um álbum e outro compacto, ambos em 1974, e se desfazendo logo em seguida. Kelly abandonou sua carreira na música na mesma década.
Waiting On You é composto por 8 faixas, intercaladas entre curtas e longas, trazendo um som que flerta entre folk e country rock, além de algumas baladas e leve tentativa comercial. O instrumental é bastante equilibrado e na maioria do tempo tranquilo, com boa pegada nas guitarras, violão, piano e bateria, sempre acompanhando o vocal de Jonathan e letras que abrangem temas como política, sociedade e religião. Quanto as faixas, destaque para "Misery", "Great Northern Railroad" e "Tell Me People", a última com claras influências de funk.
Um bom disco, recomendado para fãs de country e folk rock britânico.

A project formed in England by Irish musician Jonathan Kelly, along with Trevor Williams (former Audience), Snowy White (later Thin Lizzy member) and Chas Jankel (future guitarist of The Blockheads). The group was short-lived, releasing an album and other single, both in 1974 and splitting soon after. Kelly abandoned his music career in the same decade.
"Waiting On You" consists of 8 tracks, interspersed between short and long, bringing a sound that flirts between folk and country rock, plus some ballads and commercial attempt. The instrumental is fairly balanced and most of time quiet, with good guitars, acoustic guitar, piano and drums, always following Jonathan's vocals and lyrics about politics, society and religion. Best tracks are "Misery", "Great Northern Railroad" and "Tell Me People", the last with clear funk influences. A good record, recommended for fans of British country and folk rock.

HARD/ BLUES ROCK -CROMWELL - At the Gallop - 1975

Pérola vinda da Irlanda, formada em 1971 na capital Dublin. A banda Cromwell começou como quarteto em 1970, mas com a saída de Mick O'Hagan por volta de 1973, permaneceram como trio, lançando assim seu único disco em 1975 de forma privada e outros compactos durante seus anos na ativa. Apesar da popularidade local, chegando a abrir para Rory Gallagher na Irish Tour, brigas internas levaram ao fim do grupo alguns anos mais tarde e dois músicos formaram o The Establishment.
At the Gallop é composto por 10 curtas canções que misturam hard rock próximo da segunda metade da década de 70, doses de blues/ boogie e poucas baladas, lembrando em momentos os conterrâneos do Thin Lizzy. O som é simples e direto, guiado por alguns brilhantes riffs e solos de guitarra e bons vocais em inglês, sendo mais sólido no "lado A".
Trabalho interessante e competente para fãs de hard e blues rock setentista, mas sem nenhuma grande novidade para os estilos.

Cromwell comes from Ireland, formed in 1971 in the capital Dublin. The band began as a quartet in 1970, but with the departure of Mick O'Hagan around 1973, remained as a trio, releasing in this time their only album in 1975 privately and other singles. Despite the local popularity, opening to Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour, fighting between members led to the end of the group a few years later and two musicians formed The Establishment.
"At the Gallop" consists of 10 short songs that mix typical late-70's hard rock, blues/boogie doses and few ballads, remembering sometimes Thin Lizzy. The sound is simple and straight, led by some brilliant riffs and guitar solos and good vocals in English, better in the "A side". Interesting and competent work for hard and blues rock 70s fans, but no big news for the styles.

HARD ROCK - URGE - What´s Wrong? What´s Right? / Feelin´ Free - 1971

Pérola formada em Dublin, capital da Irlanda em 1970. A banda Urge (ou The Urge) começou como um quarteto, mas pouco tempo depois, com a saída do guitarrista John Leahy, se tornaram um power trio, gravando na época seu único e raro compacto. Após várias mudanças de formação, chegando a contar com o guitarrista Bernie Tormé, a banda se desfez em 1973.

O single de 1971 traz as músicas "What's Wrong? What's Right" e "Feelin' Free", ambas curtas e trazendo o típico hardão setentista, direto e barulhento, com excelentes solos de guitarra, vocal rasgado e belo entrosamento baixo/ bateria. Com certeza a banda tinha grande potencial para um long-play, que infelizmente nunca veio.

After several lineup changes, playing with Bernie Tormé, the band disbanded in 1973.

The single brings the songs "What's Wrong? What's Right" and "Feelin 'Free", both short and bringing the typical 70s hard rock, with excellent and noisy guitar solos, powerful vocals and great bass / drums. Surely the band had great potential for a long-play, which unfortunately never came.

FOLK ROCK - THE IRISH BAHÁ'ÍS - Peace Will Shine - 1978

Pérola obscura vinda da Irlanda, formada em meados dos anos 70. O grupo The Irish Bahá'ís surgiu em uma comunidade Bahá'í na cidade de Galway, seus membros são desconhecidos e realizaram apenas esse raro álbum em 1978 pela pequena Hyacinth Records.
Peace Will Shine é composto por 12 curtas faixas que tem como tema os princípios da fé Bahá'í, como Deus, paz, amor e espiritualidade. Aos vocais (todos masculinos) são acompanhados um folk bastante tranquilo, acústico e bonito, com leves influências de country e rock psicodélico (nas músicas "Right On Brother" e "Tara". A parte instrumental conta com violões, bandolim, flauta, bateria e baixo.

Sometime considered as a Christian band by collectors, The Irish Bahá'ís is actually a product of the Baha'i Faith, a monotheistic religion founded by Bahá'u'lláh in nineteenth-century. Recorded in a three-day session at Middle 8 Studio, when it was possible to assemble the musicians in one place (most of them were pioneers), Peace Will Shine is of a specific era in the growth of the faith in Ireland.
Some songs have a strong Neil Young influence, other are more psych/folk oriented and there is a slight traditional touch here and there. The line-up features electric guitar, classical guitar, guitars 6+12 string, mandolins, flute, drums and bass. Without any doubt, one of the rarest LPs from Ireland and also one of the best.

Pérola vinda da Irlanda, o grupo Midnight Well foi formado por Thom Moore, após o fim do Pumpkinhead, na segunda metade dos anos 70. Lançaram apenas um disco em 1977 e sem sucesso logo se desfizeram. Moore voltou aos EUA na mesma época, enquanto Gerry O'Beirne e Martin O'Connor continuaram em pequenas bandas locais.
O álbum homônimo é composto de 10 curtas faixas com som bem próximo ao do Pumpkinhead, folk rock e música tradicional celta, na maioria do tempo com bonitas passagens acústicas, domínio do violão, acompanhado de concertina, flautas e violino em alguns momentos. Pegadas de country rock americano também aparecem, em músicas como "Jesse's Friend", "Nicky's Song" e "The Mighty Turk", onde a guitarra merece destaque. Os vocais são femininos e masculinos, entrelaçando-se muito bem.

Midnight Well was a group coming from Ireland, it was formed by Thom Moore, after the end of Pumpkinhead, in the second half of the 70s. They released only one album in 1977 and unsuccessfully soon crumbled. 
The eponymous album is composed of 10 short tracks with sound very close to the Pumpkinhead, folk rock and traditional Celtic music, most of the time with beautiful acoustic passages, mastery of the acoustic guitar, accompanied by concertina, flute and violin in a few moments. Footsteps of American country rock also appear in songs like "Jesse's Friend", "Nicky's Song" and "The Mighty Turk", where the guitar deserves. The vocals are female and male, intertwining well. Pearl recommended for fans of Celtic folk and country rock.

PROG ROCK/ FUSION - SUPPLY DEMAND & CURVE - Same - 1976

Pérola formada em 1970 na capital da Irlanda, Dublin, pelo tecladista Joyon Jackson. O quarteto Supply Demand & Curve conseguiu certa popularidade e se apresentou em vários países da Europa, chegando a dividir palco com Thin Lizzy e Mellow Candle. Lançaram um único álbum em 1976, com várias participações de outros músicos locais, mas sem sucesso nas vendas logo se desfizeram.
O disco de mesmo nome traz 11 faixas curtas de rock progressivo, com influências de jazz fusion (lembrando em alguns momentos o Gentle Giant) e também música tradicional celta e country. As passagens instrumentais merecem destaque, com bonitos solos de sintetizador, piano, guitarra e ainda alguns instrumentos típicos como Tin Whistle e percussão, apesar de nada muito diferente do prog da época. O ponto fraco são os vocais, dando um tom mais comercial e mediano as canções.
Nada de extraordinário, mas uma boa pedida para fãs de rock progressivo e fusion.

Pearl formed in 1970 in Dublin, Ireland. The group Supply Demand & Curve released a single album in 1976 and soon disbanded. The self-titled brings 11 calm short tracks that combine progressive rock and jazz fusion (reminding a little Gentle Giant) with country and folk rock. Emphasis on instrumental with beautiful passages of keyboards, piano, guitar and drums. The vocals are the weak point, giving a median and comercial tone. Recommended for fans of prog / fusion.

Pérola formada em 1973 na cidade de Sligo, na Irlanda, por dois casais de Americanos que emigraram para o país alguns anos antes, Thom e Kathy Moore e Sandi e Rick Epping integraram o quarteto Pumpkinhead que lançou apenas um raro LP em 1975. Após o final do grupo Thom Moore formou o Midnight Well.
O álbum homônimo misturava música tradicional celta com algumas pegadas de rock (principalmente country) da terra natal dos caras. Os vocais são suaves, masculinos e femininos, com letras em inglês e há uso de vários instrumentos típicos da região, passando por violões e gaita de boca (que tem ótimas passagens e até uma faixa só com um solo de gaita - Se Fáth Mo Bhuartha) até Bodhrán, violino, harpa e flautas, dando um clima acústico na maioria do tempo. Destaque para as faixas "Here Comes A Man", "Are You Ready For The Country?" (bom cover de Neil Young) "Wedding Dress" e "Wild West Show", todas recomendadas para fãs de country rock.
Pérola recomendada para fãs de folk celta e também country rock.

Pearl formed in 1973 in Ireland by two couples of Americans, releasing just a rare LP in 1975.
The eponymous album mixes traditional Celtic music with some country rock tracks. The vocals are mostly soft, masculine and feminine and there are use of various instruments typical of the region, through acoustic guitars and harmonica to Bodhran, fiddle, harp and flutes, giving an acoustic mood most of the time. Pearl recommended for fans of Celtic folk and country rock also .

BLUES/COUNTRY ROCK - GRANNY'S INTENTIONS - Honest Injun - 1970

Pérola vinda de Limerick, na Irlanda. O Granny's Intentions foi formado em 1965, tocando beat e R&B e lançou alguns compactos nessa época. A banda lançou apenas um álbum em 1970 com a participação de Gary Moore, acabando logo depois, em 1972. Aconteceu também um rápido retorno em 1983.
O disco Honest Injun traz uma sonoridade mais voltada ao blues com fortes influencias de country rock, com destaque para o ótimo vocal de Duhan, guitarra e órgão, contando ainda com tímidas passagens de flauta e gaita.
No geral, um disco bem legal de ouvir, mesmo sem nada de extraordinário. Recomendada para fãs de country e blues rock.

The band released just one album in 1970 with participation of Gary Moore, following this style, with great vocals, organ and guitar. Pérola formada em Dublin, na Irlanda, no fim da década de 1960. O Tír na nÓg é uma dupla constituída pelos multi-instrumentistas Leo O'Kelly e Sonny Condell e lançaram 3 álbuns durante o começo da década de 70. A banda está ainda fazendo shows pelo país, após uma pausa de mais de 10 anos (1974-1985) quando os dois seguiram na carreira solo ou formaram algum outro grupo. Os caras são da "primeira geração" do folk rock progressivo europeu e, apesar de não ter conseguido alcançar muito sucesso ou fama, influenciaram muitos nomes da época e chegaram a abrir para importantes bandas como Jethro Tull, ELP e The Who.
Posto aqui o álbum de estreia, o homônimo Tír na nÓg, de 1971. Traz 13 curtas faixas com ótimo folk rock irlandês "contemporâneo", contando ainda com pitadas de rock progressivo, são na maioria acústicas e com presença majoritária de violão, mas outros instrumentos "atípicos" do rock ainda aparecem, como tablas, dulcimer, Tin whistle (flauta) e até harpa. Os arranjos são complexos e o vocal é bastante agradável e encaixa bem nas canções. Lembra em momentos grupos como The Incredible String Band, Pentangle ou Woods Band.
Uma pérola muito boa de escutar de vez em quando, altamente recomendado para fãs de rock acústico e folk.

FOLK ROCK - THE WOODS BAND - Same - 1971

Pérola formada em Dublin, capital da Irlanda pelo casal Gay e Terry Woods após a saída deles do também grupo folk Steeleye Span. A banda lançou apenas um álbum em 1971, algum tempo depois o grupo se dissolveu e o casal continuou com o nome de Gay And Terry Woods, lançando outros discos na segunda metade da década de 70 até a separação, em 1980.
O som do The Woods Band era muito semelhante com o de muitos outros grupos irlandeses da época, tendo como base a música celta, com algumas pitadas de rock. As músicas são curtas e simples, mas com o uso de muitos instrumentos típicos da região, como Bodhrán e Mandola. Os vocais são masculinos e femininos e agrandam bastante.
Bela pérola, recomendado para quem gosta de Celtic Folk e vocais femininos.

First of all The Woods Band show excellent technique at performing Celtic folk music - sound is quite authentic and expressive. Themes are typically folksy too.

FOLK ROCK - DR. STRANGELY STRANGE - Heavy Petting - 1970

Pérola formada no fim dos anos 60 em Dublin, na Irlanda, por Tim Booth e Ivan Pawle. Nos primeiros anos, o grupo lançou 2 álbuns (69/70) e se desfez no começo da década de 1970. A banda fez pequenas reuniões nos próximos anos a lançar mais dois novos trabalhos em 97 e 2007.
O álbum que posto aqui, Heavy Petting, lançado pelo Vertigo foi o melhor e mais conhecido da banda. Traz um folk rock simples, com alguns toques psicodélicos e progressivo. Bastante uso de instrumentos como flauta, violão e banjo. Lembra o som do The Incredible String Band.
Foi relançado em 2011 com faixas bônus ao vivo. Pérola Recomendada!!!
