Comentário: Trilha sonora de um premiado documentário lançado ano passado sobre o movimento hippie na antiga URSS e que agora ganha uma bela versão com as músicas de bandas citadas em uma edição limitada em vinil.

 Trata-se de uma excelente compilação, reunindo o fino do rock psicodélico soviético em 11 faixas de nomes da cena underground da época, alguns já postados aqui, como Yuri Morozov, Ornament, Suuk e Väntorel, oriundos das atuais Rússia e Estônia. Guitarras distorcidas, órgão 'martelando' e letras sempre na língua local dão o tom em quase todas as canções, algumas flertando até com o prog, como é o caso de 'Valged hommikud', do Mess, sendo raros os momentos fracos.

Uma excelente introdução as catacumbas do rock atrás da 'Cortina de ferro', recomendado (tanto o documentário quanto o LP).

Soundtrack of an award-winning documentary released last year about the hippie movement in the former USSR and which now gains a beautiful version with the songs of bands quoted in a limited vinyl edition.

  This is an excellent compilation, bringing together the finest of Soviet psychedelic rock in 11 tracks of the underground scene of the time, some names already posted here, such as Yuri Morozov, Ornament, Suuk and Väntorel, from present-day Russia and Estonia. Distorted guitars, heavy organ and lyrics always in the local language set the tone in almost all the songs, some flirting even with prog rock, as is the case of 'Valged hommikud', Mess, rare moments being rare.

An excellent introduction to the rock catacombs behind the 'Iron Curtain', highly recommended (both the doc and LP).

Comentário: Obscuridade máxima formada em Leningrado, na antiga URSS e atual São Petersburgo, por ex-músicos de bandas locais já postadas aqui, como Sankt Peterburg (foto acima) e Mifi. Aparentemente esta é a única apresentação ao vivo do grupo de vida curta, cujas gravações foram milagrosamente salvas e hoje rodam a internet, porém sem nenhum lançamento oficial. 

São 5 faixas de composição própria, que trazem um rock clássico beirando o hard e garagem, próximos aos sons das citadas acima. As músicas são cantadas em russo e o instrumental é básico, com guitarra liderando, acompanhada por baixo, bateria e teclado. A qualidade da gravação é novamente um ponto negativo.

Interessante registro para fãs do rock na antiga cortina de ferro.

Top obscurity from USSR, formed in Leningrad and now St. Petersburg, by former musicians from local bands already posted here, such as Sankt Peterburg (photo above) and Mifi. Apparently this was the only live performance of the short-lived group whose recordings were miraculously saved and today run the internet, but with no official release.
There are 5 tracks of own composition, that bring a classic rock with influences of the hard and garage, next to the sounds of the mentioned above. The songs are sung in Russian and the instrumental is basic, with guitar leading, accompanied by bass, drums and keyboard. The quality of the recording is again a negative point.

Comentário: Conhecido músico e compositor russo nascido em Novosibirsk, responsável por várias trilhas sonoras de filmes no período soviético e também discografia solo. Neste LP, lançado na França e feito para o filme Siberiade, de 1979, ouvimos dois lados bastante distintos (talvez por conta do enredo original). O primeiro baseado em canções tradicionais russas, acústicas e com presença de coral, enquanto no lado B (a partir de "Révélation"), ouvimos som totalmente instrumental, experimental e viajante, próximo do progressivo eletrônico, onde predominam sintetizadores de Artemiev e Bogdanov.

Mais um tesouro escondido da antiga URSS, para fãs de prog eletrônico é certamente um bom pedido.

Siberiade was directed in 1979 by Russian film maker Andreyi Konchalovski. Siberiade was filmed in 1979, won the Jury Special Prize in Cannes that year, and brought him the international recognition that would eventually take him to Hollywood.
The soundtrack, never released on CD, is something of a mystery. There is a clear cut distinction between sides A and B of the record, probably related to the historical phases which the plotline describes. Side A (except track 7) contains several traditional tunes from Siberia, possibly arranged by Artemiev, through the voice of Dmitry Bouzilev.
Side B, by contrast, features synth-washed prog experiments by the Soviet band Boomerang (Бумеранг). This short-lived group includes Edouard Artemiev (better known for his soundtracks for Tarkovski's Solaris and Stalker) and Yury Bogdanov on the synths, backed by drums, bass and guitar, oscillating between more straightforward prog and ambient-like pieces. Tracks A7 and B5 are also played by the USSR State Cinema Orchestra, Révélation being one of the most interesting scores included here.

Comentário: Primeiras gravações deste grupo soviético, originário de Leningrado (atual São Petersburgo), clique aqui para ver outro material postado no blog em 2014. Nesta compilação não oficial ouvimos 8 faixas, sendo 5 bons covers de nomes como Deep Purple, Neil Young e Ten Years After, mostrando suas influências no rock ocidental, que variam entre hard e progressivo, infelizmente marcadas pela péssima qualidade de gravação, porém com interessantes passagens de flauta, guitarra e teclados. O destaque vai para o jam "Классический импровиз", de 11 minutos e que segue a linha do Jethro Tull.

Com certeza merece uma audição para fãs de hard e prog rock, recomendado!

In this unofficial compilation we hear 8 tracks, 5 good covers of Deep Purple, Neil Young, Ten Years After and others, showing their influences on Western rock, ranging from hard and progressive, unfortunately marked by poor quality recording, but with interesting flute, guitar and keyboards passages. The highlight is "Классический импровиз", an 11 minutes jam and in Jethro Tull style.

Certainly worth listening to hard and prog rock fans, recommended!

Pérola super obscura vinda de Leningrado,  na antiga URSS e hoje São Petersburgo. O grupo Bol'shoy Zheleznyy Kolokol (em russo Большой железный колокол) foi formado em 1973 por ex-membros do Sankt Peterburg e foi mais uma banda a atuar na ilegalidade, por proibições do governo. Não chegaram a lançar nada em seus breves anos de atividade, apenas antigas gravações ao vivo circulam pela internet, mantendo viva a memória do rock soviético.

Posto aqui o bootleg Концерт в ДК им. С. Орджоникидзе (que seria um ao vivo em Leningrado no ano de 1974). Dividido em 7 curtas faixas de autoria própria, infelizmente é marcado por uma péssima qualidade de gravação, mas ainda assim podemos ouvir um som com forte pegada de hard e garage rock, solos de guitarra e órgão se revezando no instrumental e o violino bastante discreto. As letras são todas em russo.
Para fãs de rock'n'roll cru e pesado, vale a audição.

Obscure gem from Leningrad, in the former Soviet Union and now St. Petersburg. The group
Bol'shoy Zheleznyy Kolokol (Большой железный колокол) was formed in 1973 by former members of Sankt Peterburg and was another band to play in illegality by government restrictions. They didn't release anything in the few years of activity, just old live recordings circulates on the internet, keeping alive the memory of the Soviet rock.
Post here the bootleg Концерт в ДК им. С. Орджоникидзе (which would be a live in Leningrad in 1974). Divided into 7 short tracks, unfortunately marked by a poor quality recording, but we can still hear a sound with a strong influence of hard and garage rock, guitar and organ solos taking turns in the instrumental and very discreet violin. The lyrics are all in Russian. For fans of raw and heavy rock'n'roll, it's recommended.

Pérola vinda da cena underground de Leningrado (atual São Petersburgo), na Rússia (na época URSS). O grupo Rossiyane (em russo Россияне, traduzido simplesmente como "Russo") foi formado por jovens locais entre 1968 e 69 e nunca chegaram a lançar um disco oficial pela Melodiya, gravadora estatal. Apesar disso, algumas gravações da banda até os anos 80, quando se separaram, foram recuperadas por sites e cópias não oficias.
Posto aqui um desses registros, por volta de 1977 ou 78, intitulado "Россияне на плясах". É composto por 15 faixas, maioria curtas e aparentemente ao vivo, onde a banda toca um rock'n'roll clássico e similar a bandas ocidentais do início da década, passeando por influências de hard, blues e algumas baladas. O instrumental é simples e composto por riffs marcantes de guitarra, além de piano, violão e até violino, as letras são todas em russo. O principal ponto ruim é a péssima qualidade da gravação.
Talvez esse registro valha mais por sua raridade do que qualidade, mas ainda recomendo para fãs de rock soviético.

Rare gem coming from the underground scene of Leningrad (currently St. Petersburg), Russia (USSR). The group Rossiyane (Россияне, translated simply as "Russian") was formed by local young people between 1968 or 69 and never released an official album for Melodiya, state label. Nevertheless, some band's recordings until the 80s, when they disbanded, were recovered by sites and unofficial copies.
Post here one of these records, around 1977 or 78, entitled "Россияне на плясах". It consists of 15 tracks, most short and seemingly live, where the band plays a classic rock'n'roll similar to western bands of the early 70s, walking through hard, blues and some ballads. The instrumental is simple and consists of great guitar riffs, as well as piano, acoustic guitar and violin, being all the lyrics in Russian. The low point is the poor quality of the recording. Perhaps this record is worth more for its rarity than quality, but still recommend to Soviet rock fans.

CHAMBER PROG - SONANS (Сонанс) - Rock Festival Chernogolovka - 1978

Pérola formada na antiga União Soviética, em Yekaterimburgo, atual Rússia por volta de 1975/76 por universitários locais. O grupo Sonans (em russo Сонанс) surgiu com proposta de um "novo rock", fortemente influenciado pela música clássica e de câmara. Foi ativo até começo dos anos 80, deixando apenas um EP como lançamento oficial, recentemente algumas gravações ao vivo foram redescobertas. Um desses bootleg posto no blog hoje, em um festival na cidade de Chernogolovka, próxima de Moscou, em 1978, onde também se apresentaram Victoria, Magnetic Band, entre outros. 

O som é considerado "Chamber prog", mistura de art e avant prog com música de câmara, estilo conhecido por nomes como Univers Zero e Art Zoyd. O ao vivo é dividido em 7 faixas, sendo cinco ocupadas por "Часть" (simplesmente traduzido como "Parte") uma releitura do poema "Peregrinos" (Пилигримы) de Joseph Brodsky e outras duas longas composições. Pouco posso dizer sobre as músicas, já que este não é um estilo muito familiar, mas são majoritariamente instrumentais (com alguns versos em russo) e muito bem elaboradas, contando com piano, violino, sopros e violões; o ponto baixo é novamente a qualidade precária de gravação

Não é para todos os ouvidos, mas com certeza recomendado para quem aprecia ou quer conhecer mais de Chamber prog rock.

This is quite an obscure piece of music from the 70s. Sonans emerged in 1976 as a semi-formal student music studio at Sverdlov University of Architecture. The purpose of the formation was finding - through experimentation - the 'right' musical formula which would bring together the contemporary developments in instrumental rock music with the heritage of the classical composition. Material performed by the band at that time accurately reflected the group's ideology, and could be described as predominantly instrumental chamber progressive. This rather poor quality bootleg recording of a '77 live performance by Sonans seems to be the only account of the band's early efforts. The core of the record are three long and quite elaborated chamber prog pieces similar to what Gatto Marte have been doing recently. In addition, there are two short songs in a rather commonplace acoustic songwriting style which appear to be manifestedly out of place in the generally neoclassic framework. Apparently, that was indicative of the band's further development. By the end of 70s, Sonans eventually drifted towards a simpler, more song-oriented format and by 1981 effectively disbanded becasue of growing tension between the band members.

Pérola vinda da antiga URSS, a banda Visokosnoe Leto (Високосное лето) surgiu em 1972 tocando covers, mas logo depois com mudanças na formação passaram a fazer sua própria música. Foram um dos principais grupos da cena underground  local, gravando alguns álbuns, mas nenhum lançado oficialmente (por causa das proibições do governo), se desfazendo em 1979.
Em 1995 algumas dessas gravações foram lançadas em CD na Rússia, com o nome The Store of Wonders 1972-1979 (Лавка чудес). É composto por 10 faixas, maioria curtas, clara e surpreendentemente influenciado pelo rock progressivo, hard e space ocidental, em bandas como Uriah Heep, ELP e Deep Purple. A música é na maioria do tempo instrumental, solos da dupla teclado (órgão) e guitarra se revezam, acompanhados por bateria nervosa e baixo, criando momentos densos e pesados. Os vocais aparecem ocasionalmente e com letras na língua local. O ponto baixo é a qualidade da gravação, algo que se repete com quase todos os registros não-oficiais da antiga União Soviética. Destaque para as faixas mais longas.
Mais um tesouro da antiga "Cortina de Ferro", recomendada para fãs de hard prog rock.

The band Visokosnoe Leto (Високосное лето) was formed in former USSR in 1972 playing covers, but soon after with lineup changes began to make their own music. It was one of the main groups of the local underground scene, recording some albums, but none officially released (because of government bans), disbanded in 1979.
In 1995 some of these recordings were released on CD in Russia, named The Store of Wonders 1972-1979 (Лавка чудес). It consists of 10 tracks, most short, clear and surprisingly influenced by progressive, hard and space rock bands like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and ELP. The music is mostly instrumental, with great keyboard (organ) and guitar solos taking turns, accompanied by nervous drums and bass, creating dense and heavy moments. The vocals appear occasionally and lyrics are all in the local language. The low point is the quality of the recording, something that is repeated with almost all non-official records of the former Soviet Union. Emphasis on longer tracks.
Another treasure of the former "Iron Curtain", recommended for hard prog rock fans.

Pérola vinda da Rússia, formada em São Petersburgo em 1969, na época Leningrado na antiga União Soviética. O grupo Sankt Peterburg (em russo Санкт-Петербург) foi um dos pioneiros no rock local, contando com jovens da Faculdade local e atuando bom tempo sem autorização do governo (permissão para lançar discos pela gravadora estatal Melodiya). Várias pausas e mudanças de formação marcam a história da banda, que ainda está na ativa sendo o único membro original o líder e guitarrista Vladimir Rekshan.
Posto aqui uma das gravações ao vivo do grupo em 1972 lançada apenas como bootleg em 2009 intitulado Концерт На ХимФаке ЛГУ (em português, Concerto na Faculdade de Leningrado). O ao vivo é composto de 15 curtas faixas, com exceção da última e traz um rock'n'roll com pegadas hard e garagem, influenciado por bandas do ocidente, apesar das letras em russos. No instrumental domínio do competente trio baixo-bateria-guitarra, contando com solos nervosos dos dois últimos e raras passagens de teclado e violino. A qualidade do som é o ponto fraco, ruim e com ruídos.
Pérola recomendada para fãs de hard ou garage rock.

Pearl coming from Russia, formed in St. Petersburg in 1969, in former Leningrad and Soviet Union. The group Sankt Peterburg (Санкт-Петербург in Russian) was a pioneer in the local rock, with youngsters from a local University and without government permission to release records by state label Melodiya. Several breaks and lineup changes mark the band's history, which is still active and has the only original member leader and guitarist Vladimir Rekshan.
Post here one of the live recordings of the group in 1972 released as a bootleg only in 2009 titled Концерт На ХимФаке ЛГУ (Concert at the Leningrad University). This live is composed of 15 short tracks, except the last, and brings a hard and garage rock'n'roll, influenced by bands from the West, even though the lyrics in Russian. In the instrumental domain of competent trio bass-drums-guitar, with nervous solos of the last one and rare passages of keyboard and violin. The sound quality is poor, with noises. Recommended for fans of hard rock or garage.

Pérola obscura vinda da antiga URSS e atual região da Rússia, o grupo Nu Pogodi! (em russo Ну, погоди ou em português "Você Me Paga!") foi um projeto de Yuri Morozov, importante nome do rock underground da região na época, estiveram em atividade durante o final dos anos 60 e começo dos 70, apesar de não existir quase nenhuma informação da banda na internet. O nome surgiu do popular desenho animado soviético de mesmo nome. Nunca chegaram a lançar um disco, apenas recentemente antigas gravações do grupo surgiram e foram lançadas de forma não oficial.
O CD Группа памяти М. Кудрявцева (em português "Grupo em Memória de M. Kudrjavtsev")  é dividido em 12 faixas, as nove primeiras gravadas ao vivo em 1976 e outros três bônus de 73. A música dos caras traz hard rock com altas doses psicodélicas (heavy psych). Os vocais são na maioria em russo e alguns em inglês, contando com marcantes riffs e solos de guitarra ácida, bateria quebrando tudo e ainda alguns solos de órgão/ sintetizador, todos os elementos para um ótimo som "garageiro" e pirado da URSS! O ponto ruim é a qualidade do áudio, não muito boa em certos pontos. O bônus é apenas um bonito e suave folk.

This was the final formation of a popular art/jazz-rock group by the name of "НУ ПОГОДИ!" (JUST WAIT!), which is impossible to find any further information. Apparently they've been around for years, but only were able to have this magneto-album released as a result Morozov's obsession with recording everything he does (probably the most prolific underground musician of the of the 70s).
As for the music itself, it's quite impressive. It was recording in a live setting. Every track sounds great, although the quality seems to drop off as the album progresses, with tracks 7-9 sounding really murky in comparison with the much clearer sound of the first several tracks. Lots of western style prog, and Morozov seems to be transitioning from the pure psychedelia of his earlier music to a much jazzier heavy-prog (which will eventually culminate with his unknown masterpiece "Jazz Noch'ju"). He uses three of these songs for possibly his most popular album from the same year, "Svad'ba kretinov", specifically "Kretin", "Ne znaju, za chto", and "Pljashet solnechnyj svet" (renamed to "Son"). Definitely one of his best albums, and easily the best quality live performance.

GARAGE/ HARD ROCK - ZEMLYANE (Земляне) - Live at DK Ordghenikidze - 1974

Outra pérola vinda da antiga URSS, o grupo Zemlyane (em russo Земляне) surgiu no final dos anos 60, formada por estudantes de Leningrado (atual cidade de São Petesburgo, na Rússia). A banda conseguiu sucesso apenas nos anos 80 e 90, já com outras formações e som pop/comercial. Posto aqui algumas antigas gravações da banda ao vivo em 1974, em um pequeno festival na região (onde participaram outras bandas já postadas aqui, como o Mifi), mas ainda não lançadas oficialmente.
Das 6 faixas aqui presentes, 5 são competentes covers, base do repertório durante os anos 60 e 70. Clássicos de grupos americanos e ingleses Iron Butterfly ("In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" e "In The Time Of Our Lives") e Deep Purple ("Space Trucking", "Improvize" e "Child in Time). Apesar da qualidade ruim de gravação, é claro a influência dessas e outras bandas da época no som pesado e "garageiro" do Zemlyane. Órgão elétrico, guitarra com marcantes riffs e solos e ainda letras em inglês (coisa rara na época) são destaques no som dos caras.

Another pearl coming from the former USSR , the group  Zemlyane (Земляне) emerged in the late '60s , formed by students of Leningrad (current St. Petersburg , Russia). Post here some old recordings of the band live in 1974, at a small festival in the area, but not officially launched yet.
Of 6 tracks presented here, 5 are competent covers of classics American and British groups Iron Butterfly ( "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and "In The Time Of Our Lives") and Deep Purple ("Space Trucking", "Improvize" and "Child in Time"). Despite the poor recording quality, it is clear the influence of these bands of the era in their hard garage sound. Electric organ, with great guitar riffs and solos and even lyrics in English are featured on the sound guys .Recommended for fans of obscure '70s hard rock.

Pérola rara vinda da antiga URSS, formada na cidade de Leningrado (atual São Petesburgo, na Rússia). O grupo Mifi (em russo, Мифы) lançou vários álbuns de beat/pop nos anos 80 e 90, mas eu posto aqui antigas gravações ao vivo em 1974 foram disponibilizadas na internet recentemente como Bootleg.
Nesse registro ouvimos 5 curtas músicas que seguem a linha de hard rock, cru e barulhento, com toques de blues e psicodelia, até com alguns momentos de Proto Metal/Doom (como na última faixa "Не знает о чём пoет") mostrando influências de bandas inglesas da época, como Sabbath e Sir Lord Baltimore. No instrumental há ótimo trabalho do clássico trio guitarra, baixo, bateria, contando ainda com algumas passagens de teclado e piano. O ponto ruim é a qualidade do som, bastante ruim e com gravação precária.
Pérola recomenda para fãs do "hardão setentista".

Rare pearl coming from the former USSR, formed in the St. Petersburg, Russia. The group Mifi (in Russian, Мифы) released several albums of beat / pop in the 80s and 90s but I post here and old live recordings in 1974, available recently on internet.
It's composed of 5 short songs that follow the line of raw and loud hard rock, with touches of blues and psychedelia, even with a few moments of Proto Metal / Doom (like the last track "Не знает о пoет чём") showing influences of Sabbath, Sir Lord Baltimore and others. Great guitar, with heavy riffs and solos and bass/drums work, still relying on some passages of keyboard and piano. The bad point is the sound quality, very bad and poor recording.  Recommended for fans of the 70s hard.

PROG/ PSYCH ROCK - ALEXANDER GRADSKY (Александр Градский) - Размышления Шута - 1987 (1971-74)

Alexander Gradsky (Александр Градский) é um compositor soviético/ russo, nascido em 1949 em Cheliabinsk. Gradsky é um dos compositores e cantores mais populares da antiga URSS, passando pelo rock, ópera, folk e música clássica, lançando dezenas de álbuns na carreira solo até hoje. Começou sua carreira musical na década de 60 com pequenos grupos de beat rock e é considerado o avô do rock no leste europeu.
Posto aqui o álbum Размышления Шута (Reflexões do Bobo) gravado entre 1971 e 74, mas só lançado em 1987 (pois na época foi proibido pelo governo), quando Alexander ainda começava sua carreira solo. É dividido em 15 curtas faixas, todas em russo, trazendo uma mistura interessante e quase única de rock progressivo, com momentos psicodélicos, ópera e hard rock, sendo classificado como art rock por alguns sites. No instrumental, há boas passagens de guitarra, sintetizador e outros instrumentos incomuns no rock, da flauta e sax até celesta e pífano.
Pérola totalmente desconhecida em terras brasileiras, vale uma audição para os que curtem rock setentista.

Alexander Gradsky (Александр Градский) is a Soviet/ Russian songwriter, born in 1949 in Chelyabinsk. Gradsky is one of the most popular composers and singers of the former USSR, releasing dozens of albums in a solo career. He began his musical career in the 60s with small groups of rock beat and is considered the grandfather of rock in eastern Europe . Post here the album Размышления Шута, recorded between 1971 and 74, but only released in 1987. It is divided into 15 short tracks, all in Russian, bringing an interesting and almost unique mix of prog and psych rock with opera and hard rock influences, being classified as art rock.

BLUES ROCK - UDACHNOE PRIOBRETENIE (Удачное Приобретение) - Live ’1974 - 2000

Pérola raríssima vinda da antiga Rússia Socialista. O grupo Udachnoe Priobretenie (em russo Удачное Приобретение) foi uma das pouquíssimas bandas de blues rock que surgiram na região durante aquela época. O grupo foi formado em 1968 na capital Moscou e durou até 1981, tendo apenas deixado uma gravação de um show em 1974, lançado somente em 2000. De 1992 pra cá a banda aparece em pequenos shows pelas Rússia, com poucos membros da época setentista.  

O disco Live 1974 traz 10 faixas de puro blues rock, "cru" e com alguns traços de hard rock psicodélico. Todas as músicas são cantadas em inglês (coisa rara na antiga URSS, já que era proibido pelo governo), sendo quase todas covers de bandas como Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix e outros sons do blues negro americano. Destaque para ótimos riffs e solos de guitarra e também gaita de boca, que aparece em vários momentos e para as faixas "I've Got the Blues", "Someday Baby" e "Room full of mirrors", apesar de todas trazerem um competente blues rock.

Pérola altamente recomendada para fãs de blues rock.

Rare pearl of Socialist Russia. The group Udachnoe Priobretenie (Удачное Приобретение) was one of very few blues rock bands that emerged in the region during that time . The group was formed in 1968 in the capital Moscow and lasted until 1981, leaving a recording of a show in 1974, released only after the end of the socialist regime.
The album Live 1974 features 10 tracks of pure blues rock , "raw" and with some traces of heavy psychedelic rock. All songs are sung in English, witch almost all are covers of bands like the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix and other black American blues. Great riffs and electric guitar solos and also harmonica. Best tracks: "I've Got the Blues", "Someday Baby" and "Room full of mirrors". Highly recommended for fans of blues rock
