Comentário: Formado na Ilha de Wight, sul da Inglaterra, este foi um power trio 'perdido no tempo' e que lançou um raríssimo LP independente, antes de mudar seu nome para Sweet Tooth, já com outros membros. Nos anos 90 voltaram ao antigo nome e lançaram outro disco, porém as informações sobre eles são escassas e os álbuns são impossíveis de achar.

Nesta versão relançada em CD que disponibilizo aqui há 12 faixas curtas (3 bônus em relação a primeira prensagem), possuindo feeling setentista raramente encontrada em bandas de décadas posteriores, bebendo da fonte ácida / psicodélica, além de pinceladas de hard e prog. Pode ser facilmente confundido com alguma obscuridade surgida entre 68-72, caso o ouvinte não saiba a data do lançamento. O instrumental é composto por guitarra distorcida em parceria do violão, bateria, baixo pulsante e até raras passagens de órgão e flauta, variando entre momentos viajantes e enraivecidos, sempre em composições intrigantes e raras músicas 'fracas'.

Excelente e sólida raridade 'revival' dos anos 60/70, altamente recomendado!

Beggars Farm was formed on the Isle of Wight, south of England, as a power trio and released a very rare private LP before changing its name to Sweet Tooth with new members. In the 90's they came back to the old name and released another album, however the information about them is scarce and the albums are impossible to find.

In this version reissued in CD that I make available here there are 12 short tracks (3 bonuses in relation to the first press), with strong 70's feeling, rarely found in bands of later decades, clearly influenced by acid / psychedelic and touches of hard and prog. It can easily be mistaken with some obscurity between 68-72 if the listener does not know the release date. The instrumental is composed of heavy distorted guitar, acoustic guitar, drums, pulsating bass and even rare organ and flute passages, varying between trippy and raw moments, always in intriguing compositions and almost no weak songs. Highly recommended!

Comentário: Primeiro disco deste multi-instrumentista e compositor originário de Ayrshire, na Escócia, lançado originalmente com apenas 500 cópias e ganhando uma nova edição japonesa recentemente. Ele ainda lançou outros 2 trabalhos no início dos anos 80, porém sem êxito comercial e caindo na obscuridade.

O álbum é dividido em 6 faixas, tendo cinco mais curtas no lado A, que seguem influências típicas do folk britânico, acústicas e com belas harmonias vocais, refletindo acerca das memórias de infância de Grant. Já o lado B traz a excelente '90768 Suite', de 24 minutos, ganhando contornos mais viajantes, sofisticados e prog, porém mantendo a mesma linha das anteriores. O instrumental é composto por instrumentos de corda, majoritariamente acústicos (incluindo as pouco usuais bouzouki e harpa), mas que são muito bem combinados, causando diferentes cores ao som.

Ótima pérola para fãs de prog folk britânico, recomendado!

First album by this multi-instrumentalist and composer from Ayrshire, Scotland, originally released with only 500 copies and winning a new Japanese edition recently. He also released two other works in the early 1980s, but with no commercial success and falling into obscurity.

The album is divided into 6 tracks, having five shorts, which follow typical influences of British folk, acoustic and with beautiful vocal harmonies, reflecting on Grant's childhood memories. The B-side has the excellent '90768 Suite', of 24 minutes, gaining more sophisticated and prog contours, but keeping the same line as the previous ones. The instrument is composed of string instruments, mostly acoustic (including the unusual bouzouki and harp), but which are very well combined, causing different colors to sound. Highly recommended for prog folk fans!

Comentário: Pérola baseada na região de Yorkshire, Inglaterra, em 1974, porém com origens letãs, lançando um único disco e se desfazendo após várias mudanças na formação. Esta é uma obra de 10 faixas, maioria curtas, exóticas e de difícil classificação, combinando elementos da música tradicional do país báltico e a explosão do rock que ocorria na época, incluindo elementos desde rock progressivo e psicodélico até garage / proto-punk. Liderado por vocais feminino e masculinos, com todas as letras em língua letã, varia momentos mais agressivos e outros calmos e acústicos, utilizando de instrumentos não usuais no rock em várias canções, além de guitarra, bateria e baixo.

Um disco de difícil recomendação, ouçam e tirem suas conclusão.

A female fronted Latvian group from the mid-Seventies that were actually based in England, Alva are regarded as a prog-folk group, but they're a lot more varied and complex than just that! Despite many of their tunes being grounded in more typically folk-based melodies, the tunes on their sole debut work from 1977 `Ja Tik Būtu' worked in everything from little traces of acid rock, psychedelic pop, Sixties garage toughness, loose jazzy runs and an almost punky murkiness (you can even hear the guitars struggling to stay in tune here and there throughout the album!), making for a very unpredictable and colourful album with a charming do-it-yourself production. [...] `Ja Tik Būtu' is a refreshingly out-of-time album that proves to be hugely addictive and enjoyable, and prog/acid-folk and garage/psych fans should investigate this welcome female-led curio immediately!

Comentário: Atendendo a pedidos, repost de um dos primeiros e mais raros posts do blog. A história desta banda é quase toda desconhecida, incluindo seus músicos. Lançaram apenas um disco com prensagem mínima pela pequenina Eden, desaparecendo em seguida e tendo seu material redescoberto nos anos 90 pela Kissing Spell.

Dividido em 7 curtas faixas, totalizando menos de 30 minutos, este é um belo exemplo da mistura entre folk rock e psicodelia que guiou várias bandas locais na época (sendo comparado com Mellow Candle). Muito bem executado e arranjado pelos violões, com raras aparições de guitarra elétrica que acompanham os graciosos vocais femininos e masculinos, que se alternam.

Apesar de um leve toque ingênuo / amador, esta é uma das minhas pérolas favoritas de acid folk britânicas, altamente recomendado!

But the simplicity of Mourning Phase's instrumentation forms a powerful an unique poem book of dialogues for both electric and acoustic guitars, and male and graceful female voices, rejoicing and damning each other by turns. Some of the arrangements on both guitar lines and vocal discourses appear quite clever, escaping the purist folk tradition towards the straits which associate with progressive rock's and psychedelic culture's musical contexts. I also felt that the lighter load of instrumentations give more force to the adorable vocals and delightful mosaics of double guitar interplays. The compositions are in my opinion wonderful, lingering on the mental state I personally feel very comfortable with. The amateurism might be detected in closings of few songs, where I think either imagination or concentration got bit lost, and some guitar lines may prove that the musicians played on the very threshold of their own capabilities. Yet this kind of unevenness gives to me a feeling of more direct contact to the performers' personalities and sincerity in their effort, and does not lower the listening enjoyment.

Comentário: Pérola formada por jovens estudantes de Birmingham, e que lançaram apenas este mini-álbum (10") de forma privada, com míseras 50 cópias e capa feita à mão, sendo hoje um dos mais caros discos da época e ainda não relançado. Composto por três faixas que totalizam 22 minutos, o som mescla rock psicodélico e influências dos primeiros momentos do progressivo (proto-prog), típico do final dos anos 60 e começo da década seguinte. O destaque fica para as duas canções mais longas "Azrael" e "No One To Blame", mais experimentais e ousadas, com passagens de órgão, violino e flauta, acompanhando a guitarra e vocais amadores.

Um dos 'santo graais' do rock inglês setentista, recomendado tanto pela raridade quanto qualidade.

Ptolomy Psycon practically defines the raw UK underground of the early 1970s. I suppose the 99 count Holyground albums, or the hyper rare Dark album can give you an indication of the recording quality. But the music is definitely influenced by the upcoming progressive rock movement, especially Hawkwind, Steel Mill, Jethro Tull and King Crimson. The AC also offers "Ptolomy Psycon has lots of that UK psychy proto-prog flavor. This was released as a 10" EP, in an edition of only 50 copies with homemade covers. The band were from the Birmingham area, and were supposedly all students in the same school (around 16-17 years old, I think). In fact, all the "orchestral" stuff you'll hear on this was apparently done by their school band, who they hired to play on the recording!"

Comentário: Grupo formado em Birmingham e que lançou dois raros LPs, se desfazendo provavelmente pouco tempo depois. Seu baterista Alan Moore integrou o Judas Priest posteriormente. Posto aqui o derradeiro álbum, Chuffer, dividido em 11 curtas faixas que trazem um rock simples, contendo leves doses de country e até prog, porém por vezes com tentativa comercial que acaba sendo ponto negativo. O som é marcado por vários coros, acompanhados por bons momentos da guitarra e também piano.

Apesar de inconsistente, é um disco que ainda tem seus méritos e merece audição.

Group formed in Birmingham and that released two rare LPs, probably disbanding soon after. The drummer Alan Moore joined Judas Priest years later. I post here the last album, Chuffer, divided into 11 short tracks that bring a simple rock, containing slight doses of country and even prog, but sometimes with commercial attempt that ends up being a negative point. The sound is marked by several choirs, accompanied by good guitar and piano moments.

Comentário: Grupo formado em Leeds, na Inglaterra, por jovens locais. Lançaram um único e raríssimo álbum de forma privada, posteriormente relançado em CD, mas ainda assim com número limitado de cópias. O guitarrista Duncan McFarlane formaria uma banda com seu nome anos mais tarde. 

O LP abre com a excelente "Horror Suite", de 10 minutos, seguida por outros ótimos momentos, mostrando ser um belo exemplo de rock setentista, que transita entre hard e progressivo, porém com consistência e fortemente instrumental.  O som é frequentemente comparado à Wishbone Ash, pela marcante presença de guitarras duplas, acompanhadas pela 'cozinha' competente. 

Group formed in Leeds, England, by young musicians. They released only one rare album privately, later reissued on CD, but still with limited number of copies. Guitarist Duncan McFarlane would form a band with his name years later.
The LP opens with the excellent "Horror Suite", of 10 minutes, followed by other good tracks, being a great example of 70's rock, that transits between hard and progressive, but with consistency and strongly instrumental. The sound is often compared to Wishbone Ash, for the presence of double guitars accompanied by the competent bass / drums.

Composto por 8 curtas faixas de folk, com doses de rock psicodélico, basicamente acústicas e com feeling de produção caseira, o destaque fica para algumas boas melodias nos violões, harmônica, piano e letras em língua galesa. 

Absolutely amazing 'contemporary Welsh folk music' from the early 1970s. Galwad Y Mynydd (The Call of the Mountain) was a group formed by teenage brothers who went on to record one obscure LP which was re-issued via the Finder's Keeper's label in 2007. Great amateur vocal harmonies, totally perfect home-recorded vibe on the drums and jangly psychedelic guitars make for a really engaging listen. Some real down-and-out vibes too.. nice!

Porém muito pouco se sabe sobre este registro que posto aqui, não realizado oficialmente e gravado entre 1969 e 70. São 7 curtas faixas de rock psicodélico típico da época, com leves doses de garage e beat, marcados pela presença de órgão e guitarra liderando o instrumental e acompanhando vocal e vários coros (que pessoalmente não agradam).  

Obscuridade que deve agradar fãs de psicodelia britânica dos anos 60, recomendado.

Comentário: Nascido em Mumbai em 1934, o já músico Amancio D'Silva mudou-se na década de 60 para a Inglaterra, onde ganhou notoriedade na cena local e lançou alguns álbuns no período. Posto aqui seu último disco, gravado em Londres em 1974 e lançado apenas 32 anos depois, com presença de grandes nomes como Stan Tracey, Clem Alford e Don Rendell. Dividido em 5 longas e instrumentais faixas, ouvimos aqui uma excelente mistura de ritmos tradicionais indianos e jazz fusion, com talentosos músicos, passagens de no violão, sax, sitar, flauta e tablas e atmosfera viajante.

Guitarist / composer Amancio D`Silva was born in Goa, India and arrived in London in 1967, where he was immediately absorbed by the burgeoning local Jazz scene. Although D`Silva participated in a wide variety of sessions, his unique guitar voice always included a subtle Eastern undertone. However, on his solo recording projects, where his own compositions were mainly featured, this influence was much more apparent. He recorded five brilliant solo albums, of which this was the last. The musicians participating in this recording come from the ranks of legendary British Jazz scene: Don Rendell – saxophone, Stan Tracey – piano and Alan Branscombe – flute, vibes and electric piano. A sitar and two tabla players add the Indian flavor to the music, which flows beautifully like a river of sound in an enchanted garden. Absolute must!

Comentário: Terceiro e último álbum desta banda escocesa originária de Glasgow. Composto por 6 faixas e totalmente instrumental, traz um som influenciado pelo jazz rock típico da época, além de doses de funk, porém sem perder a personalidade, sendo bastante dinâmico e criativo. O quinteto reveza-se muito bem em solos, com momentos predominantes do sax, trompete, teclados e guitarra, além de consistente trabalho na bateria e baixo. Obra interessante para fãs de jazz rock e fusion em geral. 

Better than Red Dwarf. This time, Head returns in a different way, more zippy and active. I will highlight John Davies, the multi-instrumentalist, playing and destroying the trumpet and keyboards. Sometimes, it reminds me of early King Crimson stuff. The general performance is very creative and great. My favorite song here is Kick Me Quick, maybe because of the dissonant trumpet improvisated solo, and of course, it have a hot blooded crazy swing. Trust me, you will not get wrong with this.

Comentário: Único disco desta obscura banda inglesa, gravado por músicos de estúdio desconhecidos e com finalidade de aparecer em filmes e programas de TV na época. Composto de 13 curtas faixas, sendo as 6 primeiras (lado A) cantadas e as outras instrumentais, o som é orientado pela psicodelia sessentista, com doses acentuadas de freakbeat e rock de garagem, onde ouvimos ótimas passagens de guitarra fuzz e órgão, acompanhadas por bateria e baixo. Quanto as faixas, destaque para "I Am the Man", "Who's Gonna Buy?" e "Unpack Your Bags", apesar de consistente.

Ótima pérola para fãs de rock garageiro e psicodélico dos anos 60, recomendado!

This was still available at De Wolfe in the late 1980's and we sold a number of copies back then in the early days of Ultima Thule, along with lots of other curios on the label. Since then it's become a collectable! This psychedelic pop collection is a bit like the Electric Banana albums, but with hints of The Kinks, The Move or even The Troggs. Lots of nice fuzz guitar and slightly stoned flower-power feeling. The album is used as the soundtrack to at least two movies of the time, a Tigon and an Amicus film if I remember correctly (got them somewhere), including one scene where the band in the film are obviously miming to a song from this record.

Pérola formada em Newcastle, cidade da Inglaterra, no final dos anos 60. O grupo Griffin contava com ex-membros do Alan Price Set, The Happy Magazine e Skip Bifferty, porém não conseguiu sucesso e se desfez rapidamente, lançando apenas um compacto em 1969, nos EUA e Inglaterra. Após o final da banda, alguns de seus integrantes formaram o Bell + Arc e Alan White entrou para o Yes anos seguintes.
O single traz as duas curtas canções "I Am The Noise In Your Head" e "Don't You Know". O destaque vai para a primeira música, combinando hard e psicodelia típicos da época, com momentos marcantes da guitarra ácida e teclado, já a segunda é uma bonita e acústica balada com violões e piano.

Griffin was a band formed in Newcastle, England, in the late 60s. The group had former members of Alan Price Set, The Happy Magazine and Bifferty Skip, but didn't achieve success and disbanded quickly, releasing only a single in 1969 in the US and England. After the end of the band, some of its members formed the Bell + Arc and Alan White joined the Yes some years later.
The single brings the two short songs "I Am The Noise In Your Head" and "Don't You Know". The highlight is the first song, combining hard rock and psychedelia typical of the time, with important moments of acid guitar and keys, while the second is a beautiful acoustic ballad with acoustic guitars and piano.

Pérola formada na Inglaterra, como projeto do músico irlandês Jonathan Kelly, contando ainda com os músicos Trevor Williams (ex-Audience), Snowy White (que se tornaria membro do Thin Lizzy anos mais tarde) e Chas Jankel (futuro guitarrista do The Blockheads). O grupo durou pouco tempo, lançando um álbum e outro compacto, ambos em 1974, e se desfazendo logo em seguida. Kelly abandonou sua carreira na música na mesma década.
Waiting On You é composto por 8 faixas, intercaladas entre curtas e longas, trazendo um som que flerta entre folk e country rock, além de algumas baladas e leve tentativa comercial. O instrumental é bastante equilibrado e na maioria do tempo tranquilo, com boa pegada nas guitarras, violão, piano e bateria, sempre acompanhando o vocal de Jonathan e letras que abrangem temas como política, sociedade e religião. Quanto as faixas, destaque para "Misery", "Great Northern Railroad" e "Tell Me People", a última com claras influências de funk.

A project formed in England by Irish musician Jonathan Kelly, along with Trevor Williams (former Audience), Snowy White (later Thin Lizzy member) and Chas Jankel (future guitarist of The Blockheads). The group was short-lived, releasing an album and other single, both in 1974 and splitting soon after. Kelly abandoned his music career in the same decade.
"Waiting On You" consists of 8 tracks, interspersed between short and long, bringing a sound that flirts between folk and country rock, plus some ballads and commercial attempt. The instrumental is fairly balanced and most of time quiet, with good guitars, acoustic guitar, piano and drums, always following Jonathan's vocals and lyrics about politics, society and religion. Best tracks are "Misery", "Great Northern Railroad" and "Tell Me People", the last with clear funk influences. A good record, recommended for fans of British country and folk rock.

PROG ROCK - COLLUSION - Same - 1971

Mais uma raríssima pérola vinda da Inglaterra, o grupo Collusion foi formada na região de Dagenham, leste da capital Londres. Lançaram um único disco em 1971 de forma privada e segundo algumas fontes na internet com apenas 100 cópias! Essa obscura obra "volta a luz" em 2015, graças a Audio Archives, que promove um relançamento em CD e LP. 

O homônimo traz 7 faixas que combinam rock progressivo com doses de hard, psicodelia e até folk. O instrumental é tradicional, composto por duas guitarras (que assumem o protagonismo), bateria e baixo, porém todos se tocados de forma sólida e marcante. Os vocais são masculinos e femininos, muito bem intercaladas e sendo o ponto forte do álbum. Quanto as faixas, destaque para "Song of Pity", "Bluebirds" e "Sweetbread Line", apesar de raros momentos fracos.

Uma ótima indicação para fãs de hard e proto-prog dos anos 70.

The first ever vinyl reissue of a true prog rock obscurity from 1971, originally released in a tiny run on the custom SRT label. Collusion was a Dagenham-based six-piece featuring twin guitars and interwoven male/female vocals as the main ingredients. Expect hard-edged prog-rock with tasty folk and jazz elements. This engaging album features seven original tracks with the stunning 'Bluebirds' and the epic 'Sweetbread Line' as the undisputed highlights.

FOLK ROCK - KEITH NOBLE - Mr. Compromise - 1970

Uma das pérolas mais raras e valiosas já postadas no blog! Keith Noble é um músico e cantor londrino, figura importante na formação do Pink Floyd, já que este foi vocalista do grupo Sigma 6 (que mudou seu nome para Meggadeaths, Abdabs e Screaming Abdabs) durante 1963 e 64, contando com Rogers Waters, Nick Mason e Richard Wright (ainda desempenhando o papel de guitarrista). Após deixar a banda, Noble e seu companheiro Clive Metcalfe formaram um duo que gravou este raríssimo álbum de forma independente, com presença de Bob Klose, outro fundador do Floyd. Este LP nunca foi relançado e uma cópia hoje custa uma pequena fortuna.
Mr. Compromise, de 1970, é composto por 10 faixas, maioria curtas, além de vários músicos convidados. Se trata de uma obra típica do folk britânico na época, com belas e muito bem executadas composições, gerando um clima acústico e viajante. O instrumental é dominado por violões, percussão e violino, apesar de alguns momentos na linha do rock sessentista, onde ouvimos guitarra elétrica e bateria. Os vocais melódicos de Noble são outro ponto interessante.
Recomendado para apreciadores de folk-rock e também por sua ligação histórica com Pink Floyd.

Keith Noble is a musician and singer from London, important person in the formation of Pink Floyd, as he was vocalist of the group Sigma 6 (which changed its name to Meggadeaths, Abdabs and Screaming Abdabs) during 1963 and 64, with Rogers Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. After leaving the band, Noble and his friend Clive Metcalfe formed a duo that recorded this rare album privately with the presence of Bob Klose, another Floyd's founder. This LP has never been re-released and a copy today costs a small fortune.
"Mr. Compromise", recorded in 1970 consists of 10 tracks, most short and with several guest musicians. The instrumental is dominated by acoutic guitars, percussion and violin, although some moments are in the line of 60s rock, where we hear electric guitar and drums. Noble's melodic vocals are another interesting point. Recommended for folk-rock lovers and also for its historical connection with Pink Floyd.

HARD ROCK - THE BOLTON IRON MAIDEN - Maiden Flight - 2005 (1970-76)

Pérola rara vinda de Bolton, cidade ao norte da Inglaterra. Este Iron Maiden não pode ser confundindo com o dos anos 60, que lançou o disco Maiden Voyage e muito menos a famosa banda de heavy metal, sendo o segundo na ordem cronológica. O trio foi formado por jovens locais em 1967, mas mudaram de nome definitivamente apenas em 1970, alcançando certa popularidade nos anos seguintes, tocando em bares e faculdades e chegando a dividir palco com Chicken Shack, Procol Harum e Thin Lizzy. Em 1976 o grupo chegou ao fim precoce após a morte do guitarrista Ian Smith por câncer, sem lançar nada na época.
Apenas 30 anos depois, em 2005, antigas gravações dos caras voltaram a vida em Maiden Flight, sendo todo o dinheiro de vendas doado para pesquisas contra o câncer. Ainda em 2007, outro disco com covers saiu em CD. O álbum é dividido em 12 faixas próprias, sendo 4 gravadas em estúdio e as outras de forma precária ao vivo, trazendo um rock pesado e direto do começo ao fim, típico da época e com doses de blues e psicodelia, tocado por um power trio barulhento e competente.

A different Iron Maiden coming from Bolton, town in north of England. They can not be confused with the '60s band, which launched the Maiden Voyage and the famous heavy metal band, being the second in chronological order. The trio was formed by local youths in 1967, but have definitely changed in name only in 1970, reaching certain popularity in the following years, playing in bars and colleges and sharing stage with Chicken Shack, Procol Harum, Thin Lizzy and others. In 1976 the group came to an end after the early death of guitarist Ian Smith from cancer, without releasing anything at the time.
Only 30 years later, in 2005, old recordings of the guys came to the light in Maiden Flight, and all money was donated to cancer research. Also in 2007, another disc of covers came out on CD. The album is divided into 12 own tracks, 4 studio and other precariously live recordings, bringing a heavy and straight rock from start to finish, typical of the time and with blues and psychedelic doses, played by a noisy and competent power trio. A great gem for 70s hard rock lovers, highly recommended!

Pérola formada em Lancashire, norte da Inglaterra, no começo dos anos 70. A banda Holy Mackerel (não confundam com a americana de mesmo nome) contava com ex-membros de Jason Crest, Orang-Utan e Samuel Prody. Lançaram um único álbum em 1972, se desfazendo precocemente no ano seguinte, quando gravaram outro disco, mas que por problemas com a gravadora só veio à público vinte anos depois.
Posto aqui o debut homônimo de 1972, relançado este ano em CD. O álbum traz 8 faixas curtas, abrindo com o cover de "Going to the Country", da Steve Miller Band, mostrando a influência pesada de country rock dos caras, com doses acentuadas de hard, blues e algumas baladas. O som é típico da época, dominado por excelentes passagens das guitarras e poderoso vocal de Terry Clark, com alguns bons momentos de gaita e bateria. Destaque para "Going to the Country", "Spanish Attraction", "Oh!" e "The Boy And The Mekon".
Pérola altamente recomendada para fãs de country rock dos anos 70.

British band Holy Mackerel evolved out of the spotty 1960s psychedelic outfit Jason Crest.
Lead vocalist Terry Clarke, lead guitarist Derek Smallcombe and drummer Roger Siggery from the original Jason Crest put Holy Mackerel together in 1971 and they added second lead guitarist Chris Ware and bass player Tony Wood to fill out the lineup. After spending quite a bit of time in the Lancashire countryside honing their rural/melodic/hard rock sound they started to play live getting a reputation as an excellent live act. CBS signed the group and in 1972 they released their brilliant self titled album. This would be followed by a test press/acetate only second album Closer To Heaven which although the liner notes tell you otherwise is nowhere near as good.
Holy Mackerel play with passion on their 1972 only official release. The harmonies are top class and Terry Clarke sounds like he's finally mastered his "heavy" vocals, sounding powerful and confident. The interplay between Ware and Smallcombe is amazing especially on the 3 long tracks "Spanish Attraction," "Oh!" and "The Boy And The Mekon." Two cover versions are included in the rocking harmonica and harmony lead opening track "Going To The Country" by Steve Miller/Ben Sidran and Cowboy's "Rock A Bye" both are excellent. Country rock is not a term that suits Holy Mackerel and the liner notes express this. Rural heavy hard rock with power, melody, and a clear sound are what they are. Like the Welsh Band Quicksand, Dog That Bit People, Northwind, Renia, Fable there are obvious leanings towards the laidback pastoral early 70s magic vibe, but Holy Mackerel are more of a hard rock band. A perfect example of this is the brilliant "Spanish Attraction" with very interesting well-written lyrics and strong vocals from its writer Terry Clarke. The guitars smoke, the Spanish vibe is great, and a crystal clear production job just makes it perfect. This track is amazing.

Nada de especial, mas ainda interessante para fãs de funk/ pop rock e R&B.

The self-titled album was released only once in 72, by Warner. It consists of 9 tracks influenced by funk, rock and R&B, with several ballads and commercial moments. The vocals appear well, male and female taking turns and the instrumental is quiet most of the time with acoustic guitar, piano and percussion. Key tracks: "Advert", "When Will I See The Light" and "Relics". Nothing special, but still interesting for fans of funk / pop rock and R & B.

FUNK/ AFROBEAT - MATATA - Independence - 1974

Pérola formada no Quênia no começo dos anos 70, mas que rapidamente se "mudou" para Londres, onde lançaram seus dois discos em 1972 e 74. O grupo Matata contava na formação conhecidos músicos africanos, como Dudu Pukwana e Sammy Obot e conseguiu certo reconhecimento na Europa, mas a banda teve curta duração e logo se desfizeram. Vários membros continuaram carreira solo ou em outros projetos.
Posto aqui o segundo e derradeiro disco, Independence, de 1974. É composto de 12 curtas faixas de funk de excelente qualidade com grooves poderosos, misturando influências de grandes artistas americanos, como James Brown, Parliament e outros, com o afrobeat do Osibisa e The Funkess, contando ainda toques psicodélicos e jazz fusion. Instrumental rico com forte pegadas nos metais e percussão tipicamente africana (congas, bongos), órgão e guitarra aparecem menos, mas ainda sim muito bem. O vocal é outro ponto alto, totalmente funk, com letras em inglês. Para as músicas, nenhum destaque especial, já que é um trabalho sólido, com raros momentos fracos.
Pérola altamente recomendada para fãs de afrobeat e funk rock.

Fantastic African funk. This is Matata's second album, where they really play to their strengths. You might have seen some of their stuff on the Africa Funk albums a few years back. If you haven't, this is horn and guitar-driven JB-style funk by an African (Kenyan if I remember rightly) group. JB is an obvious influence and they are extremely tight. Just about every track wouldn't be out of place on a JB's album. There are so many strong cuts here you'd think it was a compilation.
