Høst é um grupo vindo da Noruega, foi formado em 1971 na pequena cidade Knapstad. Apesar de ter apenas dois álbuns lançados (1974 e 76), a banda teve grande importância local, ganhando popularidade no país de origem e na vizinha Suécia. Em 1978 mudaram o nome para "Ice", fazendo apenas um show nessa época e sem sucesso se desfizeram no mesmo ano. De 1991 pra cá o grupo fez várias reuniões e pequenos tours pela região.
Posto aqui o CD Live and Unreleased, lançado em 2001 e trazendo gravações ao vivo das três "fases" do Høst. As faixas 1 até 6 são de 1975 na Suécia, as 3 músicas seguintes são da primeira reunião em 91 e as 4 últimas da única apresentação do "Ice" em 78, em um programa de TV norueguês. A banda traz seu som característico, progressivo com fortes pegadas de rock pesado (hard prog) e ainda longos e viajantes momentos instrumentais, com destaque para grande trabalho nas guitarras, teclados e raras passagens de flauta. As letras são na língua local, com exceção das últimas quatro.
Hard/ prog rock de excelente qualidade, pérola recomendada para fãs do estilo.

Høst is a group from Norway, was formed in 1971 in the small town Knapstad. Despite having only released two albums (1974 and 76), the band had great local importance, gaining popularity in the country and in Sweden. In 1978 the name changed to "Ice", doing only one show this era, without success they disbanded in the same year. 
Post here the CD Live and Unreleased, released in 2001 and bringing live recordings of the three "phases" of Høst. Tracks 1 to 6 are from 1975 in Sweden, the following three songs are from the first meeting in 91 and the last four of the unique presentation of "Ice" in 78, in a Norwegian TV show. The band brings its distinctive sound, progressive with strong influencies of heavy rock and still long and long instrumental jams, with great work on guitars, keyboards and rare passages of flute. The lyrics are in the local language, with the exception of the last four. Hard / prog rock of excellent quality, recommended for fans of the style.

FOLK/ COUNTRY ROCK - TORTILLA - Little Heroes - 1971

Pérola vinda da pequena cidade de Bergen, na Holanda. O grupo Tortilla surgiu em 1970 pelos irmãos Jan-Piet e Emile den Tex, ambos já tinham passado por pequenas bandas locais, como Panda e Turquoise. Lançaram apenas um raro álbum em 1971, logo no ano seguinte alguns membros saíram e o quinteto se desfez precocemente.
O disco Little Heroes é dividido em 10 curtas faixas que combinam folk rock com fortes traços de country, na maior parte acústico e calmo, lembrando em vários momentos grandes nomes do estilo nos EUA. No instrumental, destaque para belas passagens de violão, piano e guitarra, contando ainda com participações de violino e sax. O vocal, com todas as letras em inglês, de Emile den Tex também são agradáveis. Para as músicas, destaque para "Dreams Take Me Away", "In the Room" e "Wild Pony" (com toques hard/ psych), apesar de ser um trabalho sólido e com vários bons momentos para fãs de folk e country rock. Pérola recomendada!

Pearl coming from the small city of Bergen, the Netherlands. The group Tortilla emerged in 1970 by brothers Jan-Piet and Emile den Tex. Just released a rare disc in 1971, in the next year some members left and the quintet disbanded early. 
The album Little Heroes is divided into 10 short tracks that blend folk rock with strong traces of country, mostly acoustic and calm, remembering various moments americans groups. Instrumentally, highlighting beautiful passages of acoustic guitar, piano and guitar still with appearances of violin and sax. For the songs, especially "Dreams Take Me Away", "Wild Pony" and "In the Room", despite being a solid and with several good moments for fans of folk and country rock work.

HARD/ SOUTHERN ROCK - COYOTE - Cast Off Your Tired Old Ethics - 1970(?)

Pérola obscura vinda dos Estados Unidos, o grupo Coyote tem história pouco conhecida, lançando um único e raro álbum. Como também nos EUA nos anos 70, tivemos outra banda com esse nome, não posso dizer se são os mesmos grupos ou diferentes. O ano de lançamento do LP também é divergente, aparecendo entre 1970,72,75 e 78. Qualquer informação é bem-vinda!
O disco Cast Off Your Tired Old Ethics traz 9 curtas faixas do típico "hardão" setentista pirado, com fortes influências de Southern e blues rock e ainda algumas bonitas baladas. Ótimo trabalho das guitarras, com pesados riffs e solos, vocal de David Tenery e algumas passagens de gaita marcam o som dos caras, não distante dos grandes nomes do Southern Rock americano da época. Destaque para "Peter Gun", "Some Day", "Final Notice" e "Blink, Drunk & Crazy".
Pérola recomendada para fãs de hard/ southern rock dos anos 70.

Obscure pearl from the United States, the group Coyote has little known history, launching a unique and rare album. But also in the USA during the 70s, there was another band with the same name, so I can not tell if they are the same or different groups. The year in which the LP is also divergent, appearing between 1970,72,75 and 78. Any information is welcome! 
The album "Cast Off Your Old Tired Ethics" brings nine short tracks of the typical 70s hard rock, with strong influences of Southern and blues rock. Great work of guitars with heavy riffs and solos and vocals David Tenery also mark the sound guys, not far from the big names of American Southern Rock of the time. Emphasis on "Peter Gun", "Some Day", "Final Notice" and "Blink, Drunk & Crazy". Recommended for fans of hard / southern rock of the 70s.

PROG ROCK - ANOTHER ROADSIDE ATTRACTION - Same - 1979

Atendendo a pedidos, um som obscuro do final dos anos 70 vindo de Toronto, no Canadá. O grupo Another Roadside Attraction foi um quarteto de curta duração que deixou apenas um raro registro em 1979, lançado de forma independente antes de se desfazer.

O disco homônimo traz 6 faixas de rock progressivo na maioria do tempo tranquilo e melódico (soft rock). O line-up incomum com dois tecladistas, baterista e um vocalista evidencia o domínio aqui, com alguns bons e longos solos de sintetizadores e piano e bateria no "background". O ponto fraco, na minha opinião, é o vocal de Paul Saunders, dando um forte caráter comercial ao som da banda. Destaque para "Serenade for the Sun" e "The Maze".

Nada de essencial, mas uma boa pérola para quem curte prog com forte pegada nos teclados.

Upon request, an obscure sound of the late 70's from Toronto, Canada. The group Another Roadside Attraction was a quartet of short duration that released just a rare record in 1979.
The self-titled album features 6 tracks of progressive rock's most soft and melodic. The unusual line-up includes two keyboardists, a drummer and a vocalist, showing the highlights here, with some good and long synth and piano solos and drums in the "background". The weak point, in my opinion, is vocal of Paul Saunders, giving a strong commercial character to the sound of the band. Highlight for "Serenade for the Sun" and "The Maze". Nothing essential, but a good gem for those who enjoy prog with much keyboards.

AVANT PROG/ JAZZ - ELEKTROBUS - Nedefinitivni - 2001 (1976)

Fechando a série de postagens do leste europeu, uma pérola vinda da antiga Tchecoslováquia e atual região da República Tcheca. O grupo Elektrobus foi formado em 1975 e não chegou a lançar um álbum no seu curto período de atividades, se findando provavelmente no ano seguinte. Gravações ao vivo desse período foram descobertas, remasterizadas e lançadas em 2001 pela Black Point.
O CD Nedefinitivni traz 14 faixas, que combinam jazz fusion, avant-prog e algumas passagens experimentais (principalmente nas músicas mais longas), com fortes influências de Zappa e lembrando os também tchecos do Plastic People of the Universe. Longas passagens instrumentais, com predomínio de saxofone, bateria e guitarra e letras em tcheco, com vocal gritado e "maluco" em certos momentos marcam o som do quarteto. Destaque para as faixas "Mě holky žerou", "Moje Hlava Neni Zdrava" "Dumka" e "Strach".
Pérola altamente recomendada para quem curte avant prog e música experimental dos anos 70.

Nedefinitivni was released by the Czech label Black Point in 2001 as part of its Archiv series. It gathers live recordings from 1975-1976 by one of the most influential avant-rock groups in communist Czechoslovakia. Of course, the sound quality is poor - rock concerts were illegal, let alone recording them. But if one is willing to look over some tape noise, muffled sounds, and signal overload, Nedefinitivni has a lot to offer, especially to fans of progressive rock and Frank Zappa. Drummer Vlastimil Marek and guitarist Pavel Richter were dedicated Zappa followers. It shows in their writing ("Dumka" is simply stunning), but also in their set list. Renditions of "King Kong," "I'm the Slime," "Muffin Man" (these two sung in Czech), and a surprising "Theme From Lumpy Gravy" cohabit with Elektrobus' originals. The longest tracks show his influence, but also an interest in prog rock in general (maybe even Henry Cow), while the shorter ones are inhabited by the zaniness of early Uz Jsme Doma: high-pitched vocals, grunts, and unexpected twists and turns (another comparison would be a keyboard-less Samla Mammas Manna). Most of the performances are musically very strong, with a peak reached in "Mojo Hlava Neni Zdrava," "Dumka," and "Strach" - a very powerful closing section. Exciting music for the curious listener.

PSYCH/ BEAT ROCK - THE SOULMEN - Sample of Happiness (EP) - 1968

Pérola vinda da antiga Checoslováquia, o trio The Soulmen foi um dos primeiros e mais importantes do país. Surgiram na atual capital da Eslováquia, Bratislava, em 1967, a formação original contava com o baixista Fedor Frešo, que depois integraria o Prúdy e Fermáta, o baterista Dušan Hájek, membro do Collegium Musicum, que saiu no mesmo ano para a entrada de Vlado Mallý, que também se uniu ao Prúdy. O líder, vocalista e guitarrista Dežo Ursiny a partir de 1970 se tornou um dos maiores nomes do rock progressivo da região, com longa carreira solo. Lançaram um único EP em 1968, mesmo ano em que a banda se desfez.
O EP Sample of Happiness é composto por 4 curtas faixas que misturam beat, rock psicodélico e garagem, com letras em inglês e clara influência de grupos britânicos da época. Destaque para as duas primeiras músicas, "Sample of Happiness" e "Wake Up", mais voltadas ao heavy/psych, com guitarra e bateria pesada. Recomendado para fãs desses estilos.

Pearl coming from the former Czechoslovakia, the trio Soulmen was among the first and most important of the country. Emerged in the current capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, in 1967, the original lineup featured bassist Fedor freso, drummers Dušan Hájek and Vlado Mally (future members of Collegium Musicum, Prúdy and Fermata). The vocalist and guitarist Dežo Ursiny became one of the biggest names in progressive rock of the region. They released a single EP in 1968, the same year that the band broke up. 
The EP Sample of Happiness consists of 4 short tracks that mix beat, psychedelic and garage rock with lyrics in English, clear influence by British groups of the era. The first two songs, "Sample of Happiness" and "Wake Up" are the best, focused on the heavy / psych with heavy guitar and drums. Recommended for fans of these styles.

JAZZ FUSION - DEN ZA DEN - Same - 1980

Pérola rara vinda da antiga Iugoslávia, atual região da Macedônia. O quarteto Den za Den surgiu no começo de 1978 na capital Escópia e tiveram carreira muito curta, sendo desmembrado logo em 1980, mesmo ano em que lançaram o único e até hoje não relançado LP.
O disco homônimo traz 11 curtas faixas, todas instrumentais, que combinam jazz fusion com prog e pitadas de folk. A parte instrumental é muito bem arranjada e dinâmica, típico dos grupos do leste europeu (lembrando muito os conterrâneos do Leb i Sol) e com músicos de qualidade, contando com solos de guitarra, piano, sintetizador e bateria, apesar de um pouco monótona em certos momentos.
Mais uma ótima pedida para fãs de jazz rock/ fusion, recomendado!

Rare pearl coming from the former Yugoslavia, current region of Macedonia. The quartet Den za Den came in early 1978 in the capital Skopje and had very short career, being dismembered soon in 1980, the same year that launched the single and still not reissued LP.
The eponymous album features 11 short tracks, all instrumentals that combine jazz fusion with prog and folk. The instrumental part is very well arranged and dynamics, typical of Eastern European groups (remember Leb i Sol) and quality musicians, with solos of guitar, piano, synthesizer and drums, though a bit monotonous at certain times. Another great choice for fans of jazz / rock fusion, recommended!

CLASSIC ROCK - CRNI BISERI - Motorok - 1976

Mais uma pérola vinda da antiga Iugoslávia. O grupo Crni Biseri foi formado na atual capital da Sérvia, Belgrado, em 1963, sendo considerado um dos pioneiros do rock na região. Lançaram muitos compactos e EPs entre 1966 e 79, mas apenas um LP em 1976. Com a saída de membros importantes, a banda logo se desfez no começo da década de 70.
O disco Motorok traz 10 curtas faixas, que trazem rock'n'roll clássico, com pegadas de hard e blues em vários momentos e ainda algumas baladas. No instrumental o simples, mas barulhente trio de guitarra, baixo e bateria dominam, contando ainda com passagens de teclado e piano. Influências do rock dos anos 50 e 60 são perceptíveis, como nas faixas "Kupiću Ti Ploču Pa Slušaj Rok" e "Šta Ću Sad No.2". Além dessas, "Roker" e "Zar Nisam Kriv" são destaque. As letras são todas em sérvio.
Nada de extraordinário, mas um "Rockão" clássico recomendado para fãs do estilo nos anos 70.

Another pearl coming from the former Yugoslavia. The group Crni Biseri was formed in the current capital of Serbia, Belgrade, in 1963. Is considered one of the pioneers of rock in the region. Launched many singles and EPs between 1966 and 79, but only one LP in 1976.
The album Motorok features 10 short tracks of good and classic rock'n'roll, with hard and blues influences and some ballads. Simple instrumental with guitar, piano, bass and drums. 50s and 60s rock touches are noticeable, as in the tracks "Kupiću Pa Ti Plocu Slušaj Rok" and "Sta Cu Sad No.2". The lyrics are all in Serbian. Nothing extraordinary, but Classic Rock recommended for fans of the style in the 70s.

HARD ROCK - JUTRO - U subotu mala / Kad bih bio bijelo dugme - 1973

Pérola vinda de Sarajevo, atual capital da Bósnia e Herzegovina e na época Iugoslávia. A banda Jutro (não confundam com o Jutro da vizinha Eslovênia) ficou conhecida por dar origem ao grupo, também bósnio, Bijelo Dugme. Iniciaram as atividades em 1971 e continuaram até 74 com esse nome, lançando apenas dois singles. Após a mudança ganharam notoriedade na região, com longa discografia, até o começo da década de 90.
Posto aqui o último compacto dos caras, trazendo as canções  "U subotu mala" e "Kad bih bio bijelo dugme", dois "hardões" de alta qualidade, com bateria detonando, guitarra pesada e letras na língua local. Nada de muito diferente ou original, mas hard rock simples e competente, típico dos anos 70. Pérola recomendada para fãs do estilo.

Activities began in 1971 and continued until 74 with that name, releasing only two singles. 
Post here the last single, bringing the songs "U subotu cat" and "Kad bih bio Bijelo Dugme" two high quality hard rocks, with heavy guitar and drums, all the lyrics in the local language. Nothing different or unique, but simple and competent hard rock, typical 70s. Recommended for fans of the style.

JAZZ/ PROG ROCK - IZVIR - Same - 1977

Pérola formada em Liubliana no começo dos anos 70, atual capital da Eslovênia e na época Iugoslávia. O grupo Izvir lançou dois compactos e um único e raro LP até se desfazer em 1978. Após o final da banda, alguns membros formaram o Predmestje ou entraram em outros projetos locais.

O álbum homônimo de 1977 é divido em apenas 6 faixas, trazendo uma ótima mistura de jazz rock, com fortes influências de prog (maioria sinfônico) e ainda funk. A excelente performance de Andrej Konjajev no órgão, piano e clavinete e das duas guitarras são destaque, mas toda a parte instrumental merece atenção, muito bem tocada e com músicos de qualidade. As letras são todas em esloveno e sérvio. As mais longas "Sel je popotnik skozi atomski vek" e "Covjekov strah", são as melhores junto com a única instrumental "Vibrolux".

Pérola altamente recomendada para fãs de jazz rock e progressivo do leste europeu.

Pearl formed in Ljubljana in the early 70s, current capital of Slovenia and Yugoslavia at the time. The group Izvir released two singles and an only and rare LP. After the end of the band, some members formed the Predmestje. 
The self-titled album from 1977 is divided into only six tracks, bringing a great mix of jazz rock, with strong influences from prog (symphonic) and even funk. The excellent performance of Andrej Konjajev in organ, piano and clavinet and the two guitars are featured, but all instrumental part deserves attention, very well played and with quality musicians. The lyrics are all in Slovenian and Serbian. "Sel Popotnik skozi atomski vek je" and "Covjekov Strah", are the best with the single instrumental "Vibrolux". Highly recommended for fans of jazz and progressive rock from Eastern Europe.
