Pérola vinda da Geórgia, estado ao sul dos EUA, formada em meados dos anos 70 e que lançou apenas um único e raro álbum de forma privada em 1976. Quase não existem outras informações sobre a Kudzu Band na internet, inclusive os nomes citados dos músicos (provavelmente trio com participação de James Youman) são apelidos.
Chitlin' Circuit é um álbum curto, dividido em 7 faixas. A música mistura southern rock (influenciado principalmente por Lynyrd Skynyrd e ZZ Top), mas já "mesclado" com outros estilos, como hard na guitarra, que lidera o instrumental, e ainda raros momentos na linha prog-balada, com flauta e sintetizadores. The Kudzu Band comes from Georgia, USA, formed in the mid-70s and has just launched an only and rare album privately in 1976. Almost no other information is available in internet, including the real names of the musicians.
Chitlin 'Circuit is a short album, divided into 7 tracks. It's typical southern rock of the era (mainly influenced by Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top), already "mixed" with other styles, such as hard on guitar, which leads the instrumental, and even rare moments in prog-ballad line with flute and synthesizer. Highlighting "Chitlin 'Circuit," "Go On Go Away" and "Back Door Man". Nothing essential, but still recommended for southern fans and hard rock of the 70s.

PROG FOLK - JACQUES TOM RIVEST - Same - 1979

Jacques Tom Rivest é um músico e cantor canadense, originário de Montreal, Quebec, onde formou o reconhecido grupo Pollen em 1972. Alguns anos após o fim da banda, Rivest lançou seu primeiro álbum solo, com presença dos ex-companheiros Richard Lemoyne, Claude Lemay e Serge Courchesne, já nos anos 80 editou outros 2 discos, na linha pop.
Seu homônimo de 1979 é composto por 10 faixas curtas. As influências principais são folk, melancólico e acústico, com elementos de rock progressivo sinfônico, um pouco mais comercial e em breves momentos lembrando o disco anterior do grupo. Letras em francês, com bonitos vocais e excelentes passagens no teclado de Lemay marcam o disco. Destaque para "La Langue De Son Pays", "Voyage Au Tibet", "Messager Du Temps" e "La Nuit".
Apesar de não ser uma obra prima do prog Quebec, ainda recomendo esta pérola para fãs do estilo, principalmente Pollen.

Jacques Rivest had the distinction of being one of the main founding members of one of Quebec's most critically acclaimed progressive rock bands from the 70's, Pollen. However by the end of 1976 the band was no more and it would be 3 years before Rivest would be heard from again when he released his self titled solo album. This album re-unites Rivest with his Pollen band mates, even original drummer Serge Courchesne who quit in '74.
While the music on this CD has flashes of instrumental fireworks don't expect it to sound like Pollen. The sound leans more towards folk but plenty of prog influences remain; the songs are also generally more commercial as well. Rivest's soothing and tender voice guides the listener through this fine collection of material and I'd have to say the highlight for me was the Eastern flavored "Voyage au Tibet" with its full and rich sound, clocking in at over 7 minutes. However there are grand orchestral moments a plenty on this disc.
Over all this is yet another solid re-issue from the ProgQuébec people and one worthy of adding to your collection if you are wondering why the 70's was a magical time for this kind of music in Québec.

BLUES ROCK - HANGAR AMBULANTE - Live - 1969 (?)

Pérola obscura vinda do México, o grupo Hangar Ambulante foi formado por jovens da capital Cidade do México no final dos anos 60. Após a morte do guitarrista Sérgio Villalobos, em 1971, passou a trio e pouco tempo depois foram desfeitos. Os guitarristas Ernesto de León (que na época já havia saído do Hangar) e Sergio Mancera participaram do Three Souls in My Mind e o baixista Olaf de la Barrera continuou em vários projetos locais, chegando a tocar com Canned Heat.
A banda nunca chegou a lançar algo, apenas quatro músicas gravadas ao vivo na época sobreviveram ao tempo e hoje podem ser achadas na internet. Ouvimos aqui um blues rock competente e nervoso do começo ao fim, com cover dos clássicos "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Rock Me Baby" (aqui chamada Puro Blues) e "Rockin Robin" (única curta e instrumental), além do tema "Canción 2", todas cantadas em inglês com vocal rasgado, excelente trabalho das guitarras, bateria e harmônica. A parte ruim é a baixa qualidade da gravação.
Pérola recomendada para fãs de blues rock setentista.

Obscure band from Mexico, "Hangar Ambulante" was formed in the late '60s by young people from the capital Mexico City. The group was disbanded after becoming a trio, around 1971, without releasing anything oficilly. The guitar players Ernesto de León and Sérgio Mancera played with Three Souls in My Mind years after and bass player Olaf de la Barrera  continued with several local projects and playing with Canned Heat. 
Post here some songs of the band available in the internet. We heard a competent and nervous blues rock from start to finish, with covers of the classics "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Rock Me Baby" and "Rockin 'Robin" (here an instrumental version), in addition to the theme "Canción 2", sung in English with heavy vocals, great work of the guitars, drums and harmonica. The bad part is the low quality of the recording.

JAZZ FUNK - EARL RODNEY - Friends & Countrymen - 1974

Earl Rodney é um músico nascido em Point Fortin, região de Trinidad e Tobago, em 1939. Desde cedo se interessou pelo tambor de aço (steelpan), instrumento típico da região, sendo membro de várias bandas e Orquestra nacional nos anos 60. Na década seguinte gravou um LP em Nova Iorque, aparentemente seu único solo, lançado em 1974 no Caribe e 35 anos depois em CD. Rodney ainda mantém projetos relacionados à música na sua terra local.
Friends & Countrymen traz 6 faixas, maioria longas e contando com longo time de músicos locais. Aqui ouvimos um caldeirão de influências, passando por ritmos latinos e caribenhos, jazz funk e rock, refletido no instrumental, que domina quase todo o tempo, liderado por excelentes passagens do tambor de aço e ainda percussão, sopros, teclado, guitarra wah-wah.
Som prazeroso e muito bem executado do começo ao fim, pérola recomendada para fãs de jazz funk e latino.

Recorded in New York in 1973, released that same year on Attilana, and reissued 35 years later by EM Records, Friends & Countrymen has stood the test of time. Earl Rodney and his countrymen were Trinidadian musicians on self-imposed exile, Rodney being one of Trinidad's best steel pan players. Friends & Countrymen is all about groove, heat, strong musicianship, fun... and the steel pan, of course! The instrument is prominently featured in the instrumental track "Midnight Man (O'Mo'O'Ru)," and always provides lead melodies and background accompaniment elsewhere. The grooves are deep Caribbean funks. Over the bass, drums, and percussion are stacked wah-wah guitar, horns a-plenty, and the alto pan. "Juck Juck" has a jam-goes-Afro-funk vibe. It's no surprise that it opens the album: its infectious beat and call-to-dance vocals immediately set the record player on fire. "Peace Pipe" is a humorous ode to marijuana, while "Strife in the Village," the album's most ambitious track, blends Chicago-type horn lines with Rodney's Island music. The second half begins with two mellower, more jam-oriented tracks (including the aforementioned "Midnight Man"). Then, the eight-minute "Friends & Countrymen" comes back to strong, uplifting songwriting, punchy horn lines, and a savory fusion of Caribbean and African styles. The steel pan is a difficult instrument to record and mix -- in the backgroud, it tends to get muddy; in the foreground, it takes a lot of room -- but engineer Haydin Harris did a fine job on this album. And Earl Rodney is definitely a stellar player, although his whole posse was quite talented.

LATIN/ FUNK ROCK - LA BANDA SALSA - Viva La Salsa - 1976

Pérola formada em meados dos anos 70 na Colômbia, pelos músicos Jaime Rodríguez e Daniel Basanta, ambos ex-Columna de Fuego. La Banda Salsa editou alguns compactos e um único álbum em 1976, gravado na Espanha e lançado lá e também no Brasil, infelizmente o grupo se desfez no final da década, caindo no esquecimento.
Viva la Salsa traz 9 faixas curtas, sendo várias covers (incluindo "And I Love Her", dos Beatles). A música, claro, é altamente influenciada por ritmos latinos, como cumbia e salsa e funk rock. O instrumental é rico, com marcantes solos de metais, sopros, percussão, teclado e guitarra, acompanhando letras em espanhol, com momentos de coro.
Pérola interessante para fãs de rock latino e funk, recomendada.

Pearl formed in the mid-70s in Colombia, by the musicians Jaime Rodríguez and Daniel Basanta, both former Columna de Fuego. La Banda Salsa edited some singles and only one album in 1976, recorded in Spain and released there and in Brazil, unfortunately the group disbanded at the end of the decade.
Viva la Salsa brings nine short tracks, and several covers (including "And I Love Her" by The Beatles). Music, of course, is highly influenced by Latin rhythms like cumbia and salsa and funk rock. The instrumental is rich with striking metals, woodwinds, percussion, keyboard and guitar solos, accompanying lyrics in Spanish, with several moments of chorus.
Interesting gem to Latin and funk rock fans, recommended.

Jean Paul "El Troglodita" (nascido Enrique Tellería, em 1945) foi um cantor originário de Callao, no Peru. Alcançou sucesso local no final dos anos 60 e começo dos 70, sendo um dos mais lembrados da "época de ouro" do rock peruano, lançando dois álbuns e vários compactos. Infelizmente, com a ditadura e problemas relacionados ao álcool, "El Troglodita" se afastou da música até sua morte em 2004, no completo abandono.
Posto aqui seu último disco, Vudú, de 1973, com presença da ótima banda Laghonia. Traz 9 faixas curtas que mostram um fase mais psicodélica e madura do cantor, apesar de manter em alguns momentos o som de garagem e baladas. O instrumental é simples, mas direto, com guitarras fuzz barulhentas, bateria, baixo e raros metais e percussão, acompanhando o vocal feroz, com letras em inglês e espanhol. Destaque para "Vudú", "Peace and Love" e "Te Amo Más".
Pérola recomendada para fãs de rock psicodélico e garagem latino-americano.

An amazing heavy psychedelic rock album from one of the best artists from Perú. Jean Paul "El Troglodita" is the nick name of a real man called Enrique Tellería. He start recording at DisPeru (same label as Saicos) a rock n' roll - ballad singer, and make one LP called "Tengo un mustang", plus few singles... then he recorded one geat single with a hard rock on Iempsa (this tracks talks about that he like to smoke, make love and when he smoke he is very happy.... he goes to the jail when the song starts to play on the radio stations). Then He was kicked form that label and goes to MAG to record his bet stuff.....am album called "Vudú" and 2 singles.

On this album, his backline is the amazing band Laghonia, making this album a must for heavy psychedelic collectors....the openning track is a wild psychedelic track with a progressive middle part...

Patricio Castillo é um cantor e compositor chileno, nascido em Cautín em 1946. Possui longa e importante história na Nueva Canción Chilena, sendo um dos membros originais da banda Quilapayún (onde ainda toca através de reuniões), participando também de obras de Amerindios e Los Jaivas e parcerias com Víctor Jara, Isabel Parra, Manduka entre outros. Durante a ditadura, exilou-se na França, onde lançou 2 discos solos.  
Posto aqui o segundo álbum, Provincias (também chamado Provinces), de 1977. É dividido em 8 faixas curtas (exceção a "Provincias I", de 16 minutos), contando com os brasileiros Manduka e Fernando Falcão. O som é basicamente folk acústico e calmo, psicodélico em momentos, na linha da Nueva Canción e lembrando vários nomes citados acima, com belas passagens de flauta, violão e percussão, incluindo alguns instrumentos típicos da América do Sul. Outro ponto marcante é a parte lírica, toda em espanhol e rica, com fortes críticas ao governo da época e temas do dia-dia do povo.
Essencial para fãs da Nueva canción latinoamericana e folk latino.

Patricio Castillo is a Chilean singer and composer, born in Cautín in 1946. He has long and important history in the Nueva Canción Chilena moviment, being one of the original members of the band Quilapayún, also participating in works of Amerindios and Los jaivas and partnerships with Víctor Jara, Isabel Parra, Manduka among others. During the dictatorship, he went into exile in France where he released two solo albums.
Post here his second album, Provincias (Provinces), of 1977. It is divided into eight short tracks (except the "Provinces I" of 16 minutes), with Brazilian Manduka and Fernando Falcão. The sound is basically peaceful and acoustic folk, little psychedelic at times, in line with the Nueva Canción and remembering various names mentioned above, with beautiful flute, acoustic guitar and percussion passages, including some typical instruments of South America. Another important point is the lyric part, all in Spanish and rich, with strong criticism to the government of the time and themes of daily life of the people. Essential for fans of the Nueva canción Latinoamericana and Latin folk.

PSYCH/ PROG ROCK - MALÓN - Rebelión - 1971

Pérola formada em Paris, capital francesa, em 1970, pelo multi-instrumentista e compositor Juan Carlos Cáceres, nascido na Argentina e que vivia na Europa desde o final da década anterior. Junto com outros músicos locais, incluindo o baixista Daniel Léonard, que integrou o Crium Delirium, o Malón lançou dois LPs no começo dos anos 70. O projeto logo se desfez e Cáceres continuou carreira solo na França até sua morte, em abril deste ano.
Posto aqui o primeiro álbum, Rebelión (também intitulado Rebellion) de 1971. É dividido em 11 faixas curtas que trazem a típica mistura de rock progressivo e psicodélico na época, contando ainda com algumas doses de ritmos latinos (como em "Candombe"). O instrumental domina, equilibrado e com bonitas passagens de flauta, percussão, órgão e guitarra, criando um clima tranquilo e viajante em momentos, acompanhado por vocal em francês, que aparece as vezes. Sem destaque principal, pois se trata de um trabalho sólido.
Excelente pérola para apreciadores de rock progressivo, psicodélico e latino dos anos 70.

Pearl formed in Paris, French capital in 1970 by multi-instrumentalist and composer Juan Carlos Cáceres, born in Argentina and living in Europe since the end of the previous decade. Along with other local musicians, including bassist Daniel Leonard (former Crium Delirium). The group Malón released two LPs in the early 70. The project soon fell apart and Cáceres continued solo career in France until his death in April this year.
Post here the first album, Rebelión (also titled Rebellion), 1971. It is divided into 11 short tracks that bring the typical mixture of progressive and psychedelic rock at the time, still counting on some doses of Latin rhythms (as in "Candombe"). The instrumental dominates, balanced and with beautiful flute, percussion, organ and guitar passages, creating a peaceful and trip atmosphere at times, accompanied by vocals in French, which appears sometimes. No main highlight, because it is a solid work. Great effort for progressive and psychedelic rock and latin of 70s.

Pérola formada em São Paulo, no começo dos anos 70. A banda Matéria Prima surgiu com o nome Caxió, por amigos de escola no bairro de São Miguel Paulista, lançando 2 álbuns na segunda metade da década, participando de festivais universitários e chegando a abrir para Tom Zé. O grupo se desfez no começo dos anos 80, com a saída de Zulú de Arrebatá.
Posto aqui o primeiro disco do quarteto, de 1975, composto por 12 curtas faixas. O som combina diversas influências, como psicodelia, música popular e nordestina e rock rural, lembrando nomes como Casa das Máquina e Pão com Manteiga. O instrumental traz bons arranjos de órgão, guitarra e alguns sopros, acompanhando o vocal de Edvaldo, com vários coros e letras em português, com temas viajantes e do dia-dia.
Pérola recomendada para fãs de rock nacional dos anos 70.

Pearl formed in São Paulo in the early 70s. The band "Matéria Prima" was a quartet of school friends in the Sao Miguel Paulista neighborhood, releasing two albums in the second half of the decade, taking part in university festivals and opening for Tom Zé. The group disbanded in the early '80s.
Post here the first disc of 1975, consists of 12 short tracks. The sound combines various influences such as psychedelia, popular music, folk and country rock, remembering names like Casa das Máquinas e Pão com Manteiga. The instrumental arrangements brings good organ, guitar and some blows, accompanying by Edvaldo's vocals with several choruses and lyrics in Portuguese, with trip and day-day themes. Rcommended for Brazilian '70s rock fans.

Pérola vinda do Uruguai, o cantor e músico Jesús Figueroa, de Montevidéu, participou da banda local Opus Alfa no começo dos anos 70. Após o fim do grupo, Jesús partiu para carreira solo, lançando 3 álbuns, sendo dois nos anos 70, quando saiu do país em 1975 e o último quase 25 anos depois. É hoje considerado uma figura importante no rock regional da época.
Posto aqui seu primeiro disco, Jesús con Todos, de 1972, contando com músicos de grupos locais como Psiglo e Diás de Blues. O álbum é composto por 7 faixas, totalizando pouco mais de meia hora, misturando rock clássico, blues, acústico e folk, lembrando em momentos sua ex-banda. O som é simples e direto, com ótimos momentos de guitarra, gaita, violão e ainda órgão, todas as letras em espanhol, vocal grosso de Figueroa e alguns temas hippies. Destaque para "Diablo", "Susana se Va", "Cambiaras Al Hombre" e o ao vivo "Lágrimas De Blues", que fecha o disco.
Ótima pérola para fãs de rock clássico e blueseiro dos anos 70.

Singer and musician Jesús Figueroa was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was a member of the local band Opus Alpha in the early 70. After the end of the group, Jesus left for a solo career, releasing three albums, two in the 70s, until he leave the country in 1975 and the last almost 25 years later.
Post here his first album, "Jesús con Todos", 1972, with musicians from local groups as Psiglo and Dias de Blues. The album consists of 7 tracks, totaling just over half an hour, mixing classic rock, blues, acoustic and folk, remembering in moments his former band. The sound is simple and straightforward, with great moments of guitar, harmonica, acoustic guitar and even organ, all the lyrics in Spanish, powerful Figueroa's vocals and some hippies themes. Emphasis on "Diablo," "Susana Se Va," "Cambiaras Al Hombre" and the live "Lágrimas De Blues," which closes the disc.
Great pearl for classic rock fans and bluesy of '70s.
