Pérola obscura vinda de Burkina Faso, país do oeste africano (na época chamado Alto Volta). O grupo L'Orchestre Afro Soul System foi formado na capital Uagadugu em meados dos anos 70, por músicos locais, de Camarões e Costa do Marfim. Lançaram 2 compactos até se desfazer no começo da década seguinte, sendo algumas dessas músicas presentes em recentes compilações sobre a música da região. 

Posto aqui o primeiro single da banda, com presença do cantor Compaore Yousouf. É dividida entre as faixas curtas "Adb san mi yele" e "Liguidi", sendo a primeira mais direcionado ao rock de garagem/ psicodélico, com pegada e refrão cativante (na língua local), além de bom solo de guitarra, acompanhado de órgão. Em Liguidi ouvimos mais influências de ritmos locais como Waraba e trabalho de percussão.

Mergulhando nos ritmos africanos, uma pérola vinda de Monróvia, capital da Libéria, pequeno país ao oeste do continente. O grupo Kapingbdi foi formado em 1976 pelo músico Kojo Samuels, lançando 3 discos entre 1978-81, todos na Alemanha, até se desfazer em 1985.
Posto aqui o debut de 1978, intitulado "African Rhythm Rock Jazz From Liberia - West Africa", sintetizando o som do grupo, que mistura ritmos locais com jazz rock e pitadas de funk, em um clima bastante dinâmico e viajante. Essa mescla fica clara no instrumental, predominante na maioria das 7 faixas, contando com vários tipos de percussão, sangba, balafon e xequerê e guitarra, saxofone, flauta e bateria. As letras aparecem esporadicamente, em inglês ou dialetos da região.
Sem destaque principal, pois ouvimos uma boa amostra de afro rock/ jazz  do começo ao fim. Altamente recomendado para fãs do estilo!

The group Kapingbdi was formed in 1976 by musician Kojo Samuels in Monrovia, capital of Liberia, a small country in west of the continent. They released 3 albums between 1978-81, all in Germany, until break up in 1985.
Post here the 1978 debut, titled "African Rhythm Rock Jazz From Liberia - West Africa", summarizing the group's sound, which combines local rhythms with jazz rock and funk touches, in a very dynamic and trip atmosphere. This "mix" is clear in instrumental, prevalent in most of the 7 tracks, with various types of percussion, sangba, balafon and shekere and eletric guitar, saxophone, flute and drums. The lyrics appear sporadically in English or local dialects.
No main highlight because we hear a good sample of afro rock / jazz from beginning to end. Highly recommended for fans of the style!

PROG/ FUSION - FOURTEEN OCTAVES - Same - 1975

Pérola vinda de Israel, Fourteen Octaves foi um projeto de vida curta, que surgiu em 1974 a partir dos pianistas Yoni Rech (ex-Kaveret) e Avner Kenner, o trio era integrado também pelo baterista Zohar Levi. Após algumas apresentações ao vivo, gravaram este único e raro álbum, com presença de músicos locais de grupos como Apocalypse e Ktzat Acheret. O disco foi relançado em 1994 (CD) e em 2008 houve uma breve reunião dos grupo.
O homônimo de 1975 traz 12 faixas curtas que combinam influências fusion e cool jazz, rock progressivo (Gentle Giant é um influência notável) e até música clássica. O som é muito bem trabalhado em torno dos pianos e teclados, além de passagens de violino e bateria, com grande qualidade individual e clima tranquilo e pacífico na maioria do tempo. As letras são em hebraico e inglês, tratando sobre temas variados, como românticos, filosóficos e tristeza.
Um disco sólido, "relax" e interessante para fãs de jazz fusion com pegada progressiva.

Fourteen Octaves' is a project that was born from the collaboration between two young musicians - Avner Kenner and Yoni Rechter, who were in the midst of a search for their true musical identity. Kenner describes the project as a raw and unripe search for complexity, the attempt to escape from the daily musical routine while actually having something interesting to say. The warm and minimalist production does justice for the precise and emotional compositions. The lyrics deal with some diverse and contradictive aspects of life. Occasionally they are childish and silly, and on other occasions philosophical, romantic, and descriptive of sadness and depression. The musical influences include the unusual style of Gentle Giant, cool jazz, classical chamber music and popular music, a combination which creates a homogeneous and unique fusion that is unheard of. During the same period of this album's release, there were quite a few artists that engaged in musical experimentations while trying to achieve a unique sound. This album manages to stand out, though it hasn't had any commercial success. It is a direct product of a genuine agenda to alter reality with focused work and self-sacrifice, and despite many changes throughout the years, it still manages to sound interesting and fresh, thanks to those efforts.

BEAT/ GARAGE ROCK - THE MODS - Folk Instrumentals of Pakistan - 1968

Pérola vinda do Paquistão, o grupo The Mods foi formado por jovens locais (liderados por Mohammed Yousuf) em meados dos anos 60 e lançou um único EP em 1968! Algumas dessas músicas estão presentes em várias compilações recentes sobre rock na região, como Pakistan Folk and Pop Instrumentals 1966 – 1976.
O EP "Folk Instrumentals of Pakistan" traz 4 curtas músicas instrumentais, versões mais "modernas" a canções tradicionais do país. O estilo do quinteto passa pelo surf e beat rock, com típica pegada garagem da época, com bons e simples solos de órgão e guitarra, se revezando com a percussão. Apesar de limitado e atrasado em relação ao resto do mundo, essa é uma obra muito interessante para fãs de rock "fora do eixo".

Pearl coming from Pakistan, "The Mods" consisted of 5 local young people (led by Mohammed Yousuf) in the mid-60s and released a single EP in 1968! Some of these songs are present in several recent compilations of rock in the region, as Pakistan Folk and Pop Instrumentals 1966-1976.
The EP "Folk Instrumentals of Pakistan" brings 4 short instrumentals tracks, "modern" versions of traditional local songs. The quintet style through the surf and beat rock with typical garage footprint and good/ simple organ and guitar solos, taking turns with the percussion. Although limited and dated the rest of the world, this is a very interesting work for fans of "uunusual" rock places.

Mike Hanopol é um músico, cantor e produtor nascido em Leyte, nas Filipinas. Começou sua carreira na música no final dos anos 60 em pequenas bandas locais até integrar o conhecido Juan de la Cruz Band, já na sua segunda formação e chegando a participar do segundo trabalho do Speed, Glue & Shinki. Já em carreira solo, lançou cinco álbuns, sendo considerado uma das maiores figuras do rock local.
Posto aqui seu segundo trabalho solo, de 1977, com presença do ex-companheiro de banda Wally Gonzales e baterista Edmund Fortuno. Buhay Musikero é composto por 8 faixas curtas, trazendo uma das mais interessantes obras do Pinoy Rock na época, combinando hard rock, pitadas de blues e psicodélico. O som é simples e direto, com excelente e barulhento trabalho nas guitarras, acompanhadas por baixo/ bateria e vocal rasgado de Hanopol (com letras em filipino e inglês), ouvimos também algumas baladas. Destaque para "Buhay Musikero", "Iron Gate",  "Circuit Rider" e "Blind Dog".
Pérola recomendada para fãs de pinoy e hard rock setentista.

Mike Hanopol is a musician, singer and producer born in Leyte, Philippines. Emphasis on "Buhay Musikero", "Iron Gate", "Circuit Rider" and "Blind Dog". Recommended for pinoy fans and hard rock seventies.

PSYCHEDELIC ROCK - SHIN JUNG HYUN & GOLDEN GRAPES - Sound Vol. 3 - 1972

Pérola vinda da Coreia do Sul, a história do grupo Golden Grapes ainda é um pouco conhecida. Aparentemente foi formada no começo dos anos 70, como banda de apoio ao renomado guitarrista local Shin Jung Hyun e contando com jovens norte-americanos ou descendentes, que havia conhecido em uma base militar americana na capital Seul alguns anos antes. Lançaram dois raros discos, em 1971 e 72, que passaram despercebidos na longa carreira de Hyun e hoje valem um bom dinheiro entre colecionadores.  

Posto aqui o segundo e último álbum de 1972, Sound Vol. 3 (ou 즐거운 Go Go 파티 신중현). É dividido em 6 faixas de rock psicodélico, próximo de bandas do fim da década de 60, como Iron Butterfly.  As cinco primeiras presentes no lado A são curtas, com vocais em coreano e pegada instrumental mais leve, guiadas pelo órgão e percussão, com ênfase para faixas 3 e 4 ("하필 그 사람" e "나를 더이상 괴롭히지 말라"). O ápice do disco fica mesmo no lado B, com a música instrumental "즐거운 Go Go", beirando os 15 minutos, que mesclam blues e psicodelia numa longa e poderosa viagem revezando passagens de guitarra, órgão e bateria.
Uma excelente chance para conhecer o rock sul-coreano, pérola recomendada para fãs de jam rock psicodélico.

Pérola obscura vinda Indonésia, o multi-instrumentista Harry Sabar nasceu na capital Jacarta e lançou alguns trabalhos no fim da década de 70 e começo de 80, além de outras participações. Apesar de certo reconhecimento local, hoje sua obra é bastante rara (lançada majoritariamente em cassete) e desconhecida fora do país. Outras informações sobre seu paradeiro ou carreira após 1985 são pouco divulgadas.
Posto aqui seu primeiro álbum, de 1979, intitulado Lentera (em português Lanterna ou Farol), com extensa lista de músicos convidados. É dividido em 10 faixas, maioria curtas, que não foge muito de outros discos indonésios da época, baseada no som soft/ pop, mas com fortes doses de rock progressivo, especialmente sinfônico, no instrumental dominado pelos sintetizadores, mellotrons, órgãos e piano, contando ainda com boas passagens de guitarra e percussão. Os vocais também são típicos, muito bem trabalhados, masculinos e femininos e com todas as letras na língua local. Destaque para as faixas "Kitaran Warsa", "Kemarin Dan Hari Ini", "Sekiranya" e "Resah".
Progressivo bastante peculiar, altamente recomendado para ouvidos já acostumados com o estilo no sudeste asiático.

It is divided into 10 tracks, most short, remembering a lot of other Indonesian discs of the time, based on a soft/ pop sound, but with strong doses of progressive rock, symphonic especially, in the instrumental dominated by synthesizers, mellotrons, organ and piano, still relying on good guitar and percussion passages. The vocals are also typical, very well-crafted, male and female, and with all the lyrics in the local language. Best tracks are "Kitaran Warsa", "Hari Ini Dan Kemarin", "Sekiranya" and "Resah". Peculiar prog, recommended for ears accustomed to the style in Southeast Asia.

HARD PROG - OLIVE - Same - 1976

Mais uma pérola obscura vinda do Japão, a banda Olive foi ativa em meados dos anos 70, lançando um único e raro álbum em 1976 de forma independente e até hoje não relançado. Segundo informações do próprio LP se tratava de uma dupla entre a vocalista Keiko Ohtsuka e guitarrista Masamitsu Nakanowatari, contando com vários músicos convidados.
O homônimo é composto por 8 faixas, maioria longas, que trazem influências típicas da época, misturando hard rock com progressivo e leves momentos de space. Os jams instrumentais são destaques, com solos viajantes de guitarra e órgão, acompanhados por consistentes bases no baixo e bateria. O grande diferencial do disco é o vocal feminino de Keiko, com letras na língua local e seguindo estilo tradicional de ópera e cantos japoneses, particularmente não encaixa bem ao som, mas vale a audição. Destaque para as faixas "Toki wa kaze no youni", "Masoukyoku" e "Testament".
Nada de essencial, mas recomendado para fãs de hard prog e space rock.

One more rare gem coming from Japan. The band Olive was active in the mid-70s, launching only a rare album in 1976 privately and still not reissued. According to LP own information it was a dual between the vocalist Keiko Ohtsuka and guitarist Masamitsu Nakanowatari, with several guest musicians.
The namesake consists of 8 tracks, most long, bringing influences typical of the time, mixing hard rock with progressive and light moments of space. The instrumental is highlight, with guitar and organ jams accompanied by a consistent bass and drums line. The great differential is Keiko's female vocals, with lyrics in the local language and following traditional opera and Japanese songs, that in my opinion don't fit well to the sound, but you may enjoy. Key tracks: "Time Passes Like The Wind", "Music Played By The Devil" and "Testament". Nothing essential but recommended for hard prog and space rock fans.

Pérola bastante obscura vinda do Japão. As informações sobre a banda Yellow são imprecisas, pois aparentemente existiram dois grupos locais com mesmo nome na época, um era power trio formado por Taisuke Morishita, que não deixou nenhum disco. Este o qual posto no blog era um sexteto, com história praticamente desconhecida, lançando dois LPs em 1975 e relançados em 2009. Qualquer novidade sobre estes grupos são bem-vindas!
O homônimo, original de 1975 é composto por 7 faixas, sendo algumas longas. O som é diversificado, com momentos voltados ao rock progressivo, fusion, folk/ soft e até funk rock, próximos a outros jams japoneses. Encontra seus melhores momentos no instrumental, com forte presença de órgão, piano, percussão/ bateria, flauta e guitarra, as letras são em japonês. Destaque para "Yellow", "Oshie Te Kudasai" e "Uchuu (Also Sprach Zarathustra)".
Apesar de um pouco irregular, recomendo essa pérola para fãs de prog/ fusion e rock oriental.

Obscure band coming from Japan Information about "Yellow" are inaccurate because apparently there were two local groups with the same name at the time, one was a power trio formed by Taisuke Morishita, that didn't release no record. In the blog I post another one, which was a sextet, with almost unknown history, releasing two LPs in 1975 and relaunched in 2009. Any news on these groups are welcome!
The self-titled consists of 7 tracks, with some long. The sound is diverse, with moments focused on progressive rock, fusion, folk / soft rock and even funk, next to other Japanese jams. Finds its best moments in the instrumental, with a strong presence of organ, piano, percussion / drums and guitar, the lyrics are all in Japanese. Key tracks are "Yellow", "Oshie Te Kudasai" and "Uchuu (Also Sprach Zarathustra)". Although a little irregular, I recommend this gem for fans of prog / fusion rock.

FOLK ROCK - TAMBURLAINE - Say No More - 1972

Pérola vinda da Nova Zelândia, formada no fim dos anos 60 na capital Wellington. O trio Tumburlaine começou tocando covers em pequenos bares e universidades locais e acabaram se destacando, na década seguinte lançaram dois álbuns e outros compactos. Infelizmente a banda se desfez em 1973, após mudanças na formação, mesmo assim vários membros seguiram carreira na música.
Posto aqui o disco Say No More, debut de 1972, contando com vários músicos convidados. É composto por 8 músicas, maioria curtas, com predomínio de folk rock e doses de country e psicodelia, lembrando alguns nomes britânicos da época. A música é bonita, serena e bem arranjada, com violões, piano, percussão, flauta, banjo e vários momentos de coro, com temática hippie e viajante. A memorável "The Flame of Thoriman" é o grande destaque, apesar de ser um trabalho sólido.
Pérola recomendada para fãs de folk rock e acid folk.

Pearl coming from New Zealand, formed in the late 60 in the capital Wellington. The trio Tumburlaine began playing covers in smalls pubs and local universities and ended up highlighting, in the next decade released two albums and others singles. Unfortunately the band disbanded in 1973 after changes in line-up, yet several members followed career in music.
Post here their debut "Say No More", of 1972, with several guest musicians. It consists of 8 songs, majority short, with a predominance of folk rock and doses of country and psychedelia, recalling some British names at the time. The music is beautiful, serene and well arranged, with acoustic guitars, piano, percussion, flute, banjo and various times of choir, with hippie and trip theme. The memorable "The Flame of Thoriman" is the highlight, despite being a solid job. Recommended for folk rock and acid folk fans.
