FOLK ROCK - JACK'S ANGELS - Our Fantasy's Kingdom - 1967

Uma bela surpresa vinda da Áustria, formada na segunda metade dos anos 60 na capital Viena pelo músico, compositor e cantor Jack Grunsky. O grupo Jack's Angels teve breve período de atividades, lançando 5 LPs e vários compactos entre 1966 e 68, se desfazendo logo em seguida. Grunsky partiu para uma carreira de sucesso, com vários discos lançados na década seguinte, até se mudar para o Canadá em 74.
Posto aqui o terceiro e mais conhecido trabalho do quarteto, Our Fantasy's Kingdom, de 1967. Composto por 12 curtas faixas, mistura folk com leves doses de rock psicodélico, lembrando várias bandas, principalmente inglesas, da época. Instrumental simples, acústico, mas muito competente marca o som, com violões, banjo, harmônica e percussão, acompanhando o maravilhoso e harmonioso vocal feminino e masculino, com todas as letras em inglês.
Linda peça folk que represente bem o estilo no fim dos anos 60, altamente recomendado para fãs do estilo.

A nice surprise coming from Austria, formed in the second half of the 60s in the capital Vienna by the musician, composer and singer Jack Grunsky. Jack's Angels had a brief period of activity, releasing 5 LPs and several singles between 1966 and 68, disbanding soon after. Grunsky had a successful career in the next decade.
Post here the third and best-known work of the quartet, Our Fantasy's Kingdom, 1967. Composed of 12 short tracks, mixing contemporary folk with mild psychedelic rock doses, reminding many bands, especially English, of the time. Simple, acoustic, but very competent instrumental is present, with acoustic guitars, banjo, harmonica and percussion, following the wonderful and harmonious female and male vocals, with all lyrics in English.
Beautiful folk piece that nicely represent the style in the late '60s, highly recommended.

PROG FOLK - SARABAND - Saraband's Mixdure - 1975

Pérola obscura vinda da Noruega, formada no começo dos anos 70 na pequena cidade de Trondheim. Não possuo quase nenhuma informação sobre o grupo Saraband, apenas que lançaram um disco muito raro em 1975 (alguns lugares citado como 1976), pela Experience, se acabando pouco tempo depois. O vocalista Skaugstad teve passagem pelo Nidaros e o guitarrista Gunnar Berg seguiu carreira solo.

Saraband's Mixdure é um álbum curto, apesar das 10 faixas presentes. É na maioria do tempo melódico e calmo, seguindo a linha folk/ pop rock, com alguns breves e mais complexos momentos de prog, fusion e até mesmo hard rock, lembrando outros grupos locais, como Prudence. Os temas são cantados em inglês e norueguês (as que mais me agradam), acompanhado por guitarra, teclado, violão e bateria.
Apesar de inconsistente, ainda recomendado para fãs de prog e folk rock "light".

Obscure pearl coming from Norway, formed in the early 70s in the small town of Trondheim. I do not have almost no information about the group Saraband, they just released a very rare album in 1975 (or 1976), by Experience, coming to an end shortly after. 
"Saraband's Mixdure" is a short album, despite of the 10 tracks present. It is most melodic and calm, following the folk / pop rock line with a few and more complex moments of prog, fusion and even hard rock, reminding other local groups such as Prudence. The themes are sung in English and Norwegian (better for me), accompanied by guitar, keyboard, guitar and drums. Although inconsistent, still recommended for "light" prog-folk rock.

KRAUT/ PSYCH/ PROG ROCK - HOTZENPLOTZ - Songs aus der Show - 1972

Pérola formada em Stuttgart, na Alemanha, por volta de 1968. O grupo Hotzenplotz lançou apenas um raro disco em 1972, antes de mudar o nome para Volks-Musik, lançando este mesmo álbum novamente no mesmo ano (apenas mudando a capa). Mesmo assim não conseguiram sucesso e alguns anos mais tarde se desfizeram, alguns membros integram outros projetos.
Songs aus der Show é composto por 12 curtas faixas, seguindo duas linhas típicas da época no país: o Deutschrock, principalmente nas letras de protesto e que retratavam a vida e problemas sociais e krautrock, que aqui se manifesta timidamente, mas mesmo assim tem influências. Rock psicodélico e progressivo se revezam, em momentos nervoso e heavy, outros folk e acústico e ainda viajantes improvisações. O instrumental também é variado, com guitarra, órgão, percussão e flauta.
Obra interessante para fãs de kraut, psych/prog rock, mas que perde um pouco do sentido para quem não entende alemão.

Gem formed in Stuttgart, Germany, circa 1968. The group Hotzenplotz released only a rare album in 1972 before changing its name to Volks-Musik, releasing the same album again in the same year (only changing the cover). Still failed to hit and a few years later disbanded, some members integrate other projects.
"Songs aus der Show" consists of 12 short tracks, following two typical lines of the time in the country: deutschrock, mainly in protest lyrics, describing the life and social problems and krautrock, which here manifests itself timidly, but still has influences . Psychedelic and progressive rock take turns, in heavy moments, other folk and acoustic and even some brief improvisations. The instrumental is also varied, with guitar, organ, percussion and flute. Interesting work for kraut, psych / prog rock fans, but loses some of sense for those who don't understand German.

PROG FOLK - AXEL EINARSSON - Acting Like A Fool - 1976

Pérola obscura vinda da Islândia. O guitarrista e cantor Axel Einarsson é conhecido por integrar a banda local Icecross, que lançou em 1973 um dos mais valiosos discos de rock do país na época. Após o fim do grupo Axel seguiu breve carreira solo, lançando um único e raro disco em 1976, de 500 cópias. Ele ainda participou de um grupo chamado Deildarbúngubræður e partiu para os Estados Unidos, onde trabalha como produtor.
Seu álbum Acting Like A Fool conta com presença de músicos locais e dividido em 8 curtas faixas. O som já é distante do Icecross, mais voltado a música pop e comercial, com alguns lampejos de prog (nos teclados e flauta), folk e hard rock (guitarra). O forte vocal é um ponto interessante, sendo todas as letras em inglês. Três das últimas músicas são destaque, "Acting Like a Fool", "Wandering Around" e "Daylight of My Love".
Irregular e pouco criativo, mas ainda assim vale uma audição para fãs de prog folk e Icecross.

Guitarist and singer Axel Einarsson was born in Iceland and is known for integrate local band Icecross. After the end of the group Axel followed brief solo career, releasing only one and rare record in 1976, with 500 copies. He also participated in a group called Deildarbúngubræður and left for the United States, where he works as a producer.
"Acting Like A Fool" features local musicians and it's divided into eight short tracks. The sound is already far from Icecross, closer to pop and commercial music, with some flashes of prog (on keyboards and flute), folk and hard rock (guitar). The strong vocal is an interesting point, being all lyrics in English. The last three songs are best: "Acting Like a Fool", "Wandering Around" and "Daylight of My Love." Irregular and little creative, but still worth a hearing for prog and folk Icecross fans.

PSYCH ROCK - TYLYMPI KOHTALO - Musta Kreivi - Niin On Yö / Popparienkeli - 1970

Pérola vinda da Finlândia, formada em 1969 na cidade de Turku. O projeto Tylympi Kohtalo surgiu a partir do vocalista local Rauli Ojanen e outros ex-integrantes do Suomen Talvisota 1939-1940, e teve curta duração, deixando apenas um único e raro compacto em 1970, se desfazendo no mesmo ano. A banda teve um breve retorno por volta de 2011 com alguns antigos membros.

Este single lançado pela Love traz as curtas e simples músicas "Musta Kreivi - Niin On Yö" e "Popparienkeli", na linha psicodélica dos anos 60, misturando rock e pop. Letras na língua local, saxofone viajante e guitarra marcam o som, que vai agradar fãs de psych rock da época.

Tylympi kohtalo was a project coming from Finland, formed in 1969 in Turku. It was led by local singer Ojanen Rauli and other former members of Suomen Talvisota 1939-1940, the band was short-lived, releasing only a rare single in 1970, disbanding in the same year. 

This single released by Love brings short and simple songs "Musta Kreivi - Niin On Yö" and "Popparienkeli", following the psychedelic '60s line, mixing rock and pop. Lyrics in the local language, trip saxophone and guitar mark the sound that will please psych rock fans of the time.

JAZZ ROCK - CORONARIAS DANS - Visitor - 1975

Pérola vinda da Dinamarca, formada em 1969 pelo tecladista Kenneth Knudsen. O Coronarias Dans passou por duas fases distintas nos poucos anos de atividade, sendo um trio mais voltado ao jazz europeu no seu primeiro disco de 1970, intitulado Breathe. Após a entrada do guitarrista Claus Bøhling (ex-Hurdy Gurdy) e troca de baterista eles gravaram mais um LP, em 1973, que veio a ser lançado dois anos mais tarde na Dinamarca e em 76 nos EUA, quando a banda já havia se desfeito e vários membros já tinha formado o Secret Oyster. 

Posto aqui o último álbum do grupo, Visitor, dividido em 8 faixas instrumentais, sendo maioria curtas. Neste trabalho ouvimos um som muito mais voltado ao jazz rock, dinâmico e ao mesmo tempo muito viajante, com o adicional da guitarra, que junto com o teclado moog e piano de Knudsen, proporcionam grandes solos e passagens ao longo do disco, a parceira bateria/ baixo também não decepciona. Apesar de sólido, o destaque vai para "Morning", "Don't Know", "Tied Waves" e a fantástica "Which Witch", que fecha o álbum.
Altamente recomendado para fãs de Secret Oyster e jazz rock em geral.

Pearl coming from Denmark, formed in 1969 by keyboardist Kenneth Knudsen. Coronary Dans passed through two distinct phases in the few years of activity, with a trio focused at European jazz in its first 1970 album entitled Breathe. After guitarist Claus Böhling (former Hurdy Gurdy) join the band and drummer change they recorded another LP in 1973, released two years later in Denmark and 76 in the US, when the band had already broken and several members had formed the Secret Oyster.
Post here their last album, Visitor, divided into eight instrumental tracks, and most short. We heard a much more jazz rock sound, dynamic and at the same time very trip/spacey, with additional guitar, which along with the moog keyboard and piano, provide great solos and passages along the record, the drums/ bass also does not disappoint. Although solid and intense from start to end, the best tracks are "Se Det", "Morning," "Don't Know" and the fantastic "Which Witch", closing the album.
Highly recommended for Secret Oyster fans and jazz rock in general.

BLUES ROCK - LÖPANDE BANDET - Nån gång måste man landa - 1975

Löpande Bandet foi um grupo de sueco de curta duração. A banda foi formada em Estocolmo, no início de 1974, liderados pelo guitarrista Rolf Wikstrom. Alguns meses depois, após alguns ensaios e shows, gravaram seu único e raríssimo disco. Infelizmente logo no ano seguinte se desfizeram, após Wikstrom, hoje importante nome do blues local, sair alegando que os outros músicos não tenham o mesmo nível musical que ele.
O álbum Nån gång måste man landa (algo como "Algum dia você deve parar"), de 1975 é dividido em 9 faixas, quase todas curtas. O som dos caras pode soar estranho em primeiro momento, na tentativa de mesclar blues rock com progressivo e algumas baladas, somado a letras em sueco e vocal feminino de Lotta Sandberg, que em momentos lembra ópera e outros Janis Joplin. Apesar da excentricidade, ouvimos um sólido trabalho na guitarra, acompanhada por percussão, bateria e baixo.
Vale uma audição, pérola recomendada principalmente para fãs de blues rock.

Löpande Bandet was a Swedish short-lived group. The band was formed in Stockholm in early 1974, led by guitarist Rolf Wikstrom. A few months later, after some rehearsals and shows, they recorded their only and rare LP. Unfortunately in the next year they disbanded after Wikstrom, an important name of the local blues nowadays, leave claiming that the other musicians had a lower musical level.
The album Nan gång måste man Landa (something like "Someday you must stop"), 1975 is divided into 9 tracks, almost all short. The sound of the guys may sound strange at first, in an attempt to mix blues rock with progressive and some ballads, plus the Swedish lyrics and Lotta Sandberg's female vocal, at times resembles opera and other Janis Joplin. Despite the eccentricity, we hear a solid job on guitar, accompanied by percussion, drums and bass. Worth a hearing, recommended mainly for blues rock fans.

PROG ROCK - RICHARD LAST GROUP - Get Ready - 1972

Pérola vinda da Itália, ativa no começo dos anos 70. Pouco se sabe sobre Richard Last Group, eles eram provavelmente do sul do país e deixaram um único e raro disco, lançado originalmente em 1972 e com nova versão em 1999. Apesar de contar com 7 membros, apenas o líder Richard Coley é conhecido, este que partiu para carreira solo no ano seguinte (produzindo outro raríssimo LP em 73) e resultando no fim da banda.

O álbum Get Ready é composto por 12 curtas faixas, sendo apenas três composições originais, combinando influências de rock progressivo (principalmente britânico, tendo Jethro Tull como principal referência), soft/ folk rock e psicodelia. Encontram seus melhores momentos no instrumental, com boas melodias e passagens de flauta, órgão, guitarra e até metais, mas sem tanta criatividade para fazer desta obra uma memorável dentro do RPI. Todas as letras são em inglês.
Nenhuma obra-prima, mas ainda uma boa audição para fãs de rock progressivo.

Little is known about this band. Info about the band, pretty damn hard to find.
Released in ’72 (on Le Orme’s label, Car Juke Box), a completely unknown formation from the underground of the Italian prog movement, Akarma believes that all of the musicians contained here are of Italian origin, but it is unclear. The band was comprised of 7 members and they presented a sound comparable to British groups from the 70’s like Jethro Tull. The music is very nice - lots of flutes, soft and beautiful harmony in the spirit of Jethro Tull and Traffic, a successful addition to the guitar and organ. Of the 12 tracks, only three original compositions. In fact in one of the first tracks they play a cover of “Dharma For One”, plus they offer two other covers later on, “Eye To Eye” & “I Have A Dream”. Jazz-rock with electric & electro-acoustic mutations, song in English, showing good technical qualities but little in creativity.
This album was released on the unknown Alexandra label. Judging from the title of one of the original compositions on the album, Naples in rock, it was easy to think that the group was from that city.

HARD ROCK - THE BOLTON IRON MAIDEN - Maiden Flight - 2005 (1970-76)

Pérola rara vinda de Bolton, cidade ao norte da Inglaterra. Este Iron Maiden não pode ser confundindo com o dos anos 60, que lançou o disco Maiden Voyage e muito menos a famosa banda de heavy metal, sendo o segundo na ordem cronológica. O trio foi formado por jovens locais em 1967, mas mudaram de nome definitivamente apenas em 1970, alcançando certa popularidade nos anos seguintes, tocando em bares e faculdades e chegando a dividir palco com Chicken Shack, Procol Harum e Thin Lizzy. Em 1976 o grupo chegou ao fim precoce após a morte do guitarrista Ian Smith por câncer, sem lançar nada na época.
Apenas 30 anos depois, em 2005, antigas gravações dos caras voltaram a vida em Maiden Flight, sendo todo o dinheiro de vendas doado para pesquisas contra o câncer. Ainda em 2007, outro disco com covers saiu em CD. O álbum é dividido em 12 faixas próprias, sendo 4 gravadas em estúdio e as outras de forma precária ao vivo, trazendo um rock pesado e direto do começo ao fim, típico da época e com doses de blues e psicodelia, tocado por um power trio barulhento e competente.
Prato cheio para amantes do "hardão setentista", altamente recomendado!

A different Iron Maiden coming from Bolton, town in north of England. They can not be confused with the '60s band, which launched the Maiden Voyage and the famous heavy metal band, being the second in chronological order. The trio was formed by local youths in 1967, but have definitely changed in name only in 1970, reaching certain popularity in the following years, playing in bars and colleges and sharing stage with Chicken Shack, Procol Harum, Thin Lizzy and others. In 1976 the group came to an end after the early death of guitarist Ian Smith from cancer, without releasing anything at the time.
Only 30 years later, in 2005, old recordings of the guys came to the light in Maiden Flight, and all money was donated to cancer research. Also in 2007, another disc of covers came out on CD. The album is divided into 12 own tracks, 4 studio and other precariously live recordings, bringing a heavy and straight rock from start to finish, typical of the time and with blues and psychedelic doses, played by a noisy and competent power trio. A great gem for 70s hard rock lovers, highly recommended!

Pérola obscura vinda da Bélgica, o power trio Load Control foi formado na cidade de Dinant no começo dos anos 70. Lançaram dois raros compactos em anos desconhecidos (alguns dizem por volta de 1972) e sumiram do mapa, assim como dezenas de outras bandas da cena local. Posto aqui o primeiro, com as músicas "Scotland" e "Words of Wisdom", ambas curtas e cantadas em inglês, trazendo típica pegada do hard rock setentista, com altas doses psicodélicas e até considerada como proto-doom por alguns sites. Solos nervosos e chapados de guitarra lideram o som, seguidos por bateria barulhenta e baixo. Excelente, porém breve registro que vai agradar fãs de hard rock psicodélico.

Post here the first single, with the songs "Scotland" and "Words of Wisdom", both short and sung in English, bringing typical early 70s hard rock, with high psychedelic doses and even considered as proto-doom by some sites. Fussy and stoned guitar solos leads the soung sound, followed by noisy drums and bass. Excellent, however brief record that will please heavy and psych rock fans.
