HEAVY PSYCH/ BLUES - BANDOLERO - Same - 1970

Um dos grupos mais importantes e populares vindos de Porto Rico nas décadas de 60 e 70, formado por jovens da capital San Juan, após fim de pequenas bandas locais. O Bandolero lançou um único álbum em 1970, antes de se fazerem precocemente, reeditado algumas vezes posteriormente.
O homônimo de 1970 é composto por 11 faixas competentes que seguem muito a psicodelia norte-americana da época, com algumas doses de blues, ritmos latinos e baladas. O instrumental é marcado pelo entrosamento órgão e guitarra fuzz ácida, se revezando em grandes solos, acompanhando ainda por bom trabalho de baixo, bateria e percussão. As letras são a maioria em inglês, apesar de alguns temas serem cantados em espanhol. Destaque para "I Got It", "My Life Is Always Going Through", "Together" e "Truth And Understanding".
Um LP que coloca Porto Rico no mapa do "planeta rock" dos anos 60 e 70, pérola recomendada para fãs de rock psicodélico latino e blueseiro.

Psychedelic-garage-blues-jam from Puerto Rican. The album was released in 1970 and its full of fuzzy treats, all wailing guitar and screaming organ hammond like Moby Grape. Much of this one's claim to fame rests with the fact it was included in Hans Pokora's 1001 Record Collector Dreams. Their sole album "Bandolero" was recorded in San Juan's Ochoa Recording Studios. Musically the performances were professional, but failed to offer up anything special. With Nogueras responsible for writing the majority of material, tracks such as 'Together', ''Truth and Understanding' and 'Awake' showcased a fairly standard mix of conventional hard rock ('Together'), blues ('My Life Is Always Going Through Changes') and Latin moves (imagine Santana with a bit of grunge thrown in for authenticity and you'll be in the right aural neighborhood). As lead singer Nogueras was okay and most of the performances were in English (though his English much leaves the to be desired) but a couple of songs featured Spanish lyrics. Perhaps not a big surprise, but Spanish numbers like 'Salsa Friquea' displayed considerably more energy than the band's Anglo catalog...album in my opinion one of the greatest exponents of psychedelia from Latin America.

ELECTRONIC PROG - ANGEL RADA - Upadesa - 1979

Angel Rada é um músico nascido em Havana, capital de Cuba, em 1958, mas que veio com a família para a Venezuela ainda com um ano de idade. Começou sua carreira em 1970 com pequenos grupos locais, anos depois foi estudar música na Alemanha, onde gravou seus primeiros trabalhos solos no fim da mesma década. De volta a América do Sul, lançou outros vários álbuns e fez shows ao redor do globo.
Posto aqui seu debut, intitulado Upadesa, lançado em 1979 (data incerta, pois alguns lugares citam como 1983). É composto por 7 faixas, maioria curta, dedicadas a Klaus Schulze, mostrando as claras influências da escola eletrônica alemã na composição do artista. O álbum é todo instrumental, com predomínio de sintetizadores e bateria eletrônica, ambos tocados por Angel Rada e com breve participação de Carlos Urzua no violão, resultando em um som muito viajante e abstrata. Destaque para "Asesinato Musical", "Panico a las 5 a.m." e "Mar de la Tristeza", apesar de consistente.
Ótima surpresa para fãs de música eletrônica/ ambiente e sul-americana.

Angel Rada is a musician born in Havana, Cuba, in 1958, but came with his family to Venezuela when he was one year old. He began his career in 1970 with small local groups, years later was studying music in Germany, where he recorded his first solo works at the end of the decade. Back in South America, he has released several other albums and toured around the globe.
Post here his debut, titled Upadesa, released in 1979 (uncertain year, as some places says 1983). It consists of seven tracks, most short, dedicated to Klaus Schulze, showing the clear influences of German electronics school in the artist's composition. The album is all instrumental, with a predominance of synthesizers and electronic drums, both played by Angel Rada and brief participation of Carlos Urzua on the guitar, resulting in a very trip and abstract sound. Highlighting "Asesinato Musical", "Panico a las 5 am" and "Mar de la Tristeza" despite consistent.

REPOST: ACID BLUES ROCK - JAVIER BÁTIZ - Coming Home - 1969

O guitarrista Javier Bátiz nasceu em 1944 em Tijuana e é considerado um dos pioneiros do rock no país e muito influente para a "geração de Avandaro". Ingressou na carreira solo em meados da década de 60, após participar de pequenos grupos beat, lançando vários álbuns e na ativa até hoje.
Faço aqui um repost de seu terceiro registro: Coming Home, de 1969. É considerado uma das melhores obras dentro do rock mexicano da época, onde desfilam 10 faixas curtas e com influências pesadas do blues rock negro norte-americano, rock psicodélico, latino e até hard rock. A guitarra ácida e barulhenta domina, acompanhada por boas passagens percussão e teclado, além da voz rouca e delirante de Bátiz, que se encaixa bem nas canções, as letras são todas em inglês. Quanto as faixas, destaque para o cover de "Down Broken Hearted", "Why Do You Do Me", "Getting Through" e "Coming Home". Pérola recomendado para todos os fãs de blues e psicodelia latino-americana.

Very soulful blues rock from 1969. Think more Albert King/Magic Sam than Led Zeppelin/Allman Brothers Band. From Mexico but the lyrics are in English and a strong Latin influence only comes out on a couple of tracks. (Most notably the stellar "Why Do You Do Me") Javier Batiz is a hell of guitar player and this album is outstanding. A horn section and occasional female background vocals add some depth to the sound. "Let Me Give My Love to You" and "I'm Not the One" are a couple of highlights on here.

LATIN/ PSYCH ROCK - MONTEVIDEO BLUES - Same - 1972

Pérola formada em Montevidéu, capital uruguaia, no começo dos anos 70, o projeto Montevideo Blues nasceu graças ao lendário cantor local Gastón "Dino", contando com outros importantes músicos da cena local. Infelizmente a banda teve período de atividades curto, resultando em apenas um álbum, raro e lançado em 1972 e reeditado neste ano com 500 cópias.
O homônimo é composto por 10 faixas curtas onde predomina-se elementos de ritmos típicos do país, como malambo e camdombe, e ainda leves toques de psicodelia e blues tradicional. A principal característica do álbum são as letras carregadas de crítica a política e problemas sociais enfrentados na época, sempre em espanhol. O instrumental é acústico e simples, em momentos até hipnotizante, com forte trabalho de percussão e guitarra.
Um disco de difícil audição em primeiro momento, mas que se revela interessante na proposta de fusão de ritmos latinos e crítica.

The one and only album by Dino & Montevideo Blues deserves to be a serious contender as one of the most important, and as it happens, most grooving, records ever released in Uruguay. But there is another reason that the album has attained exalted status: the incisive power of the lyrics, which are all the more impressive considering the national turmoil out of which they were created. Montevideo Blues was founded by Uruguayan song-writing legend Gastón 'Dino' Ciarlo as a way to fuse the rawness of rock music with obscure native Uruguayan rhythms like malambo, milonga and chamarrita, a logical direction to pursue after Dino had attempted pop/candombe fusions in his solo recordings. 'At the time, we were revolutionary and looking for change,' said Dino. Montevideo Blues demonstrated an unyielding and combative attitude, during live shows in 1971, Dino often criticized the government—a level of political commitment reflected in the lyrics of the songs, some of the most radical ever set to music. The album opens with one of Dino's most famous songs 'Milonga de Pelo Largo' ('Milonga of the Long Hair'), a sinuous song transformed by the arrival of the dictatorship into a hymn of Uruguayan popular resistance. The rest of the album tracks have an edgy, atonal quality, with terrific unconventional angular guitar and a kind of ragged glory, all driven along by insistent grooving rhythms, whether from native drums or the clicking of drumsticks.

HARD ROCK - CADENAS - Rock para Janis/Niño Solitario - 1973

Pérola formada em 1972 na cidade de Rosário, na Argentina. O grupo Cadenas se mudou no ano seguinte para a capital Buenas Aires, onde fizeram algumas marcantes apresentações e gravaram seu único compacto pela Microfón, de 500 cópias. Infelizmente o quarteto não conseguiu sucesso e se desfez, logo após alguns membros formaram a banda pop Los Moros.
Posto aqui este single com as curtas músicas "Rock para Janis" e "Niño Solitario", consideradas um dos primeiros exemplos de rock pesado no país, junto com El Reloj e Pappo. Hard simples e nervoso define ambas as canções, com guitarras fuzz matadoras acompanhadas por bateria e baixo pulsante. O vocal de Arbizú também é destaque, rasgado e em espanhol. Infelizmente o grupo não teve continuidade, pois aqui ouvimos um petardo do "hardão setentista".

Cadenas was  formed in 1972 in Rosario, Argentina, the group moved in the following year to the capital Buenos Aires, where they made some remarkable performances and recorded their only single by microfon, with 500 copies. Unfortunately the quartet failed to succeed and disbanded soon after, some members formed the pop band Los Moros.
Post here this single with short songs "Rock para Janis" and "Niño Solitario", considered one of the first example of hard rock in the country, along with El Reloj and Pappo. Simple and nervous defines both songs with killer fuzz guitars accompanied by heavy drums and bass. Arbizu's vocals is also a highlight, yelled and sung in Spanish. Unfortunately the group did not continue, because here we hear a nice South American 70s hard rock.

PROG FOLK - GRUPO SOL DE CHILE - Same - 1974

Pérola formada em 1974 na Argentina, mas por músicos chilenos exilados após o golpe no país de origem do ano anterior. Eram liderados por Antonio Smith (do grupo Congregación), contando também com o pianista Matias Pizarro. Infelizmente o projeto durou poucos meses, lançando um único e raríssimo álbum no mesmo ano, pela Tonodisc.
O homônimo é composto por 9 curtas faixas, mesclando composições próprias e covers de Los Jaivas e Illapu, resultando em  um som próximo de outros trabalhos locais na época. Rock psicodélico e progressivo com fortes raízes nos ritmos andinos e "Nueva Canción" são representados por músicos competentes, com inspiradas passagens de guitarra, violão, piano, percussão e instrumentos típicos como quena (flauta) e charango. Os vocais são outro ponto interessante, sendo todas as letras em espanhol e com temas que vão desde críticas sociais até sentimentos.
Uma obra muito consistente e bonita do rock e folk sul-americano, altamente recomendado para fãs do grupos citados acima.

Formed in 1974 in Argentina, but by Chilean musicians exiled after the coup in the country in the previous year. "Grupo Sol de Chile" were led by Antonio Smith (former member of Congregacion), also featuring pianist Matias Pizarro. Unfortunately the project lasted a few months, launching only one rare album in the same year, by Tonodisc.
The self-titled is composed of nine short tracks, mixing original compositions and covers of Los Jaivas and Illapu, resulting in a sound close to other local bands at the time. Psychedelic and progressive rock with strong roots in the Andean rhythms and "Nueva Canción" are represented by competent musicians, with great passages of acoustic guitar, piano, percussion and typical instruments like quena (flute) and charango. The vocals are another interesting point, all lyrics in Spanish talking about politics, social life and feelings.
A very consistent and beautiful South American rock and folk fusion, highly recommended for fans of the groups mentioned above.

PROG/ JAM ROCK - RED AMBER - Unofficial Compilation - 1974/75

Pérola formada em Lima, capital do Peru, por volta de 1974. O grupo Red Amber teve período de atividade bastante curto, acabando no ano seguinte, mesmo assim esse quarteto de jovens locais deixaram sua marca no rock local por serem considerados pioneiros na mescla de elementos do rock progressivo no seu som.
Oficialmente lançaram apenas um compacto em 75, com as músicas "You'll Come To Me" e "The Coke Jam". As outras 3 faixas que posto aqui hoje foram redescobertas graças a internet, gravadas ao vivo ou em ensaios, sendo a qualidade de gravação infelizmente muito ruim, mas com alguns jams instrumentais interessantes, como em "Frog Leap" e "Poor World", de 11 minutos, onde ouvimos boas passagens de guitarra, teclado. As letras em inglês, mas o vocal não é dos melhores. Recomendado para fãs de prog e jam rock.

Formed in Lima, capital of Peru, around 1974, the Red Amber group had short life, ending in the following year, yet this quartet of local youths left their mark in the local rock because they are considered pioneers in the mix of progressive rock elements in their sound.
Officially launched just a single in 1975, with the songs "You'll Come To Me" and "The Coke Jam". The other three tracks that I post here today were rediscovered thanks to internet, recorded live or in rehearsals, the recording quality is unfortunately too bad, but with some interesting instrumental jams, as in "Frog Leap" and "Poor World" of 11 minutes, where we hear good guitar and keyboard passages. The lyrics are in English, but the vocals are not the best.

PSYCH/ FUNK ROCK - ACHADOS E PERDIDOS - Same - 1974

O grupo Achados e Perdidos surgiu no Rio de Janeiro em 1974 a partir de ex-membros do Diagonais, lançando dois compactos e um LP até o ano seguinte. Característicos pelo estilo glam, nos cabelos coloridos e roupas espalhafatosas, a banda infelizmente não conseguiu sucesso e se desfez em pouco tempo, dois integrantes ainda formaram a banda Taxi no final da década.
O homônimo de 74 é composto por 12 faixas que totalizam pouco mais de meia hora e misturam influências como psicodelia, soul/ funk, samba-rock e baião. O vocal é marcante e descontraído, com bem-humoradas letras em português abordando temas como dia-dia, regionalismo e sentimentos. O instrumental é simples, contando com clássico trio bateria/ baixo e guitarra, junto a raros momentos de sintetizador, flauta, sanfona e gaita.
Um bom e típico exemplo do rock nacional dos anos 70, pérola recomendada!

The group "Achados e Perdidos" was formed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1974 by former members of "Diagonais", releasing two singles and an LP until the following year. Characteristic by glam style, colored hair and flashy clothes, the band unfortunately failed to succeed and fell apart soon after, two members still formed the band Taxi at the end of the decade.
The self-titled consists of 12 tracks totaling just over half an hour and mix influences like psychedelia, soul / funk, samba rock and ballads. The vocal is remarkable and relaxed, with humorous lyrics in Portuguese covering topics such as daily life, regionalism and feelings. The instrumental is simple, with classic trio drums / bass and guitar, along with rare moments of synthesizer, flute, accordion and harmonica. Good example of Brazillian 70s rock, especially recommended for Portuguese speakers.

HARD PROG - TRAPHICO - Same - 1980

Pérola formada no fim dos anos 70 em Bogotá, na Colômbia. O grupo Traphico era formado por jovens e teve certo sucesso na época, se apresentando em festivais locais e programas de TV. Lançaram dois álbuns no começo dos anos 80 até se desfazerem logo em seguida e caírem no esquecimento.

Posto aqui o disco de estréia da banda, homônimo de 1980. É composto por 9 faixas que mesclam rock progressivo (principalmente nos sintetizadores) e hard rock, mas infelizmente em linha muito comercial e com várias baladas. As letras são maioria em inglês e algumas em espanhol, sem grande ênfase para o vocal, o instrumental, apesar de simples, aparece bem em certos momentos com teclados e guitarra. Outro ponto fraco é a baixa qualidade de gravação.
Nenhuma grande surpresa, mas que pode agradar fãs de hard e prog rock dos anos 80.

Group formed in the late '70s in Bogota, Colombia, Traphico consisted of young musicians and had some success at the time, performing at local festivals and TV shows. Released two albums in the early '80s until disband right after.
Post here the band's debut album, self-titled of 1980. It consists of 9 tracks that mix progressive rock (especially the synthesizer) and hard rock, but unfortunately in very mainstream way and several ballads. The lyrics are mostly in English and some in Spanish, with little emphasis on the vocal, instrumental, although simple, appears well at times with keyboards and guitar. Another weak point is the low quality of recording. Not a big surprise, but can please fans of 80s hard and prog rock.

Ronald Snijders é um multi-instrumentista nascido em Paramaribo, capital do Suriname, em 1951. Começou a estudar flauta com 7 anos, influenciado pelo pai e em 1970 partiu para a Holanda, onde se estabeleceu como músico e lançou seus vários discos nas décadas seguintes. Hoje continua em atividade, trabalhando também como professor e produtor na Europa.
Posto aqui seu raro debut intitulado Natural Sources, de 1977, onde Ronald mostra toda sua habilidade compondo e tocando todos os instrumentos nas 10 faixas. Suas influências são variadas, passando sempre pelo jazz, em momentos latino (inclusive ritmos brasileiros), outros funk e fusion/ experimental, trazendo uma experiência musical muito agradável e bem viajante. O álbum é todo instrumental e acústico, com uso de flauta, percussão, violão e teclados, destaque para as músicas "Seven Wings", "Busy Street" e "Brazilian Blue", apesar de consistente.
Deixem-se levar pelo belo som, pérola essencial para fãs de jazz latino e fusion.
