HARD/ BOOGIE ROCK - GLASHAUS - Drinking Man - 1977

Obscura banda vinda da Áustria, formada em meados dos anos 70 pelos irmãos Harry e Dieter Stuempfl . Informações sobre o quinteto Glashaus são escassas, eles provavelmente se estabeleceram em Munique, lá gravando seu único e raro álbum em 1977. Sem sucesso a banda se desfez e alguns de seus membros formaram o grupo Email anos depois.
Drinking Man é um álbum curto, dividido em 10 faixas. Ouvimos aqui mescla tradicional de hard, boogie e country rock do final da década, simples e direto, com destaque para as bons solos e riffs das guitarras, acompanhada por bons momentos de órgão, gaita e bateria. As letras são todas em inglês e com constantes coros. Destaque para "Drinking Man", "The Waiting Game" e "Vertigo".
Apesar de um pouco comercial e nada extraordinário, merece atenção de fãs de boogie e country rock.

A groovy upbeat rock album from Austria, sung in English. Not progressive, with some cuts verging on hard rock, there is some good organ work. The opener Shine On Medas is Status Quo-like boogie, and there is a southern/boogie feel to most other tracks. The Waiting Game and Vertigo are my heavy picks.
Nothing extraordinary, but notable as a rare example of it's kind to come from Austria at the time, a country which seems to have missed out entirely on hard rock and heavy metal in the '70s, but did have a decent punk/new wave scene at the tail-end.

HARD/ PSYCH ROCK - TRIPTYQUE - If You Are in a Bad Mood / Don't Worry - 1970

Obscuro trio formado em Paris, capital francesa, entre o fim dos anos 60 e começo dos 70. A banda Triptyque lançou apenas um raro compacto em 1970 pela Opaline, após de desfazer o guitarrista e líder Alain Renaud partiu para carreira solo, lançando 3 álbuns na mesma década. É composto pelas duas curtas faixas "If You Are In A Bad Mood" e "Don't Worry", ambas na pegada típica da época, primariamente influenciadas por rock psicodélico, mas também progressivo, hard e até blues. Destaque para a guitarra de Renaud que traz momentos de peso ao som, além dos vocais equilibrados em inglês.

Obscure trio from Paris, France, active between the late 60s and early 70s. The band Triptyque released just one rare single in 1970 by Opaline, after disbanding, the guitarist and leader Alain Renaud left for a solo career, releasing three albums in the same decade. It is composed of the two short tracks "If You Are In A Bad Mood" and "Do Not Worry", both in the typical early 70's way, primarily influenced by psychedelic rock, but also progressive, hard and even blues. Highlighting to Renaud's guitar that brings some heavy moments to sound, as well as balanced vocals in English.

SYMPHONIC PROG - OCTOPUS - Thaerie Wiighen - 1981

Pérola vinda da Noruega, formada em Haugesund, ao norte do país. Liderados pelo tecladista Tore Aarnes, o trio Octopus lançou um único álbum em 1981 de forma independente (até hoje não relançado) e desapareceu.
O álbum Thaerie Wiighen é conceitual e baseado na obra homônima do poeta e dramaturgo local Henrik Ibsen, trazendo 8 faixas de rock progressivo sinfônico e ainda folk-prog, próximo de obras da metade dos anos 70. O competente trabalho de Aarnes no piano, órgão e sintetizadores é destaque, bem acompanhado por guitarra, violão e flauta, dando um clima mais melódico na maioria do tempo. Outro ponto marcante são as letras em norueguês, dando um "charme" a obra.
Longe de uma obra-prima, mas boa pedida para fãs de prog sinfônico e escandinavo.

Octopus was a band from Norway, formed in Haugesund, north of the country. Led by keyboardist Tore Aarnes, the trio released one album in 1981 privately (not reissued yet) and disappeared.
"Thaerie Wiighen" is a album is conceptual and based on the homonymous work of the poet and playwright Henrik Ibsen, bringing 8 symphonic prog tracks, with touches of folk/ art rock, close to mid-70's albums. Aarnes' work in piano, organ and synthesizers is highlight, accompanied by acoustic guitar, guitar and flute, giving a more melodic mood most of the time. Another striking point is the lyrics in Norwegian, giving a "charm" the work.

PROG ROCK - JESSICA - Jessica (Bearbeitung von Reger Op. 89/27) - 1975

Pérola obscura vinda da Alemanha, muito pouco se sabe sobre o grupo Jessica. Lançaram um único e raro álbum em 1975 (apesar de alguns sites trazerem como 1973) pelo pequeno selo Knöterich e sumiram do mapa.
Posto aqui o disco Jessica (Bearbeitung von Reger Op. 89/27), composto por 4 faixas totalmente instrumentais, sendo duas longas e duas curtas. O som é próximo do progressivo, em momentos sinfônico e outros fusion, mas longe experimentações do Krautrock, guiado por belo trabalho no piano e sintetizadores de Henner Herdick, acompanhado por bateria e guitarra "discreta".

Jessica was a very obscure band formed in Germany during the early 70s, they released only one rare album in 1975.
Piano driven symphonic rock. One of the few German bands to have an almost Italian sound in places, like Festa Mobile for example. Has a jazzy lounge feel to it with plenty of piano and toned down electric guitar. Also features quite a bit of acoustic guitar. A nice title, in league with bands like Tetragon and Hax Cel.

HARD ROCK - TARANTULA - Angel of Stone / Tarantula Dance - 1972

Pérola obscura formada em Amsterdã, capital da Holanda, em 1971. O grupo foi formado originalmente com o nome Tantalus e no ano seguinte mudou para Tarantula, e assim como tantas outras bandas locais lançou apenas um raro compacto. Este traz as músicas "Angel of Stone" e "Tarantula Dance", ambas na casa dos 3 minutos e que mesclam estilos típicos do começo dos anos 70, principalmente hard e brass/ funk rock. O instrumental é bastante dinâmico, com guitarra barulhenta, metais (trompete e saxofone), percussão, flauta e vocais rasgados.
Com certeza uma banda muito competente e que poderia perfeitamente lançar um LP na época.

Tarantula was a band formed in Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, in 1971. The group was originally named Tantalus and in the next year changed definitely, and like so many other local bands has just launched a rare single. This brings the songs "Angel of Stone" and "Tarantula Dance", both with 3 minutes and mixing typical early 70s styles, as hard and brass / funk rock. The instrumental is quite dynamic, with noisy guitar, brass (trumpet and saxophone), percussion, flute and good vocals. Certainly a very competent group and that could have released a LP at the time.

Fechando mais uma série de posts do leste europeu com uma preciosa pérola formada em Praga, atual República Tcheca e na época Tchecoslováquia. O grupo Marsyas foi formado como trio em 1973, por Oskar Petr, Petr Kalandra e Zuzana Michnová, passando por várias mudanças durantes seus longos anos de atividade, lançando 5 álbuns entre 1978 e 89. A banda teve uma rápida volta na última década.
Posto aqui seu debut de 1978, que traz 10 faixas e uma longa quantidade de músicos convidados, incluindo membros de Jazz Q, Pražský výběr e Flamengo, a "nata" do prog tcheco na época. Folk rock é o estilo principal, com acentuadas influências de progressivo, resultando em clima na maioria do tempo tranquilo e relaxante. O instrumental é variado e bem executado, onde ouvimos boas passagens de violão, teclados, guitarra, percussão, harmônica e mais raramente violino, flauta e até cuíca (!). O vocal, feminino e masculino, é outro ponto forte, passando sentimentos poéticos, alegres e melancólicos, capaz de tocar mesmo quem não entende uma só palavra em tcheco.
Um trabalho sem pontos fracos e altamente recomendado para fãs de prog-folk!

A precious pearl formed in Prague, Czech Republic, former Czechoslovakia. The group Marsyas was formed as a trio in 1973 by Oskar Petr, Petr Kalandra and Zuzana Michnová, going through several changes during their long years of activity, releasing five albums between 1978 and 89. The band took a quick turn in the last decade.
Post here its 1978 debut, which features 10 tracks and a long amount of guest musicians, including members of Jazz Q, Pražský výběr and Flamengo, the best of the Czech prog at the time. Folk rock is the main style, with strong progressive influences, resulting in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere at time. The instrumental is varied and well executed, we hear good passages of acoustic guitar, keyboards, guitar, percussion, harmonica and more rarely violin or flute. The male/ female vocals are another strong point, with poetic, joy and melancholic feelings, able to touch even those who do not understand a single word in Czech. Without weak point and highly recommended for prog-folk fans!

PROG FOLK - S VREMENA NA VREME - Same - 1975

Pérola vinda de Belgrado, atual capital da Sérvia e na época Iugoslávia. O grupo S Vremena Na Vreme ("De tempo em tempo") foi formado em 1972 e ganhou grande expressão local durante a década, lançando dois álbuns, vários singles e compondo para programas de TV e teatro. Tiveram uma volta nos anos 90, fazendo shows pelo país e deixando mais dois registros, incluindo um ao vivo.
Posto aqui o primeiro e mais conhecido disco da banda, homônimo de 1975. Composto por 11 curtas faixas, é considerado pioneiro na região por promover fusão de ritmos tradicionais balcânicos com rock progressivo, dominado por clima acústico e em momentos até espiritual, o instrumental é reflexo disso, passando por violões, percussão, flauta e instrumentos locais como Sargija e Tamburica até sintetizadores e guitarra. As belas harmonias vocais também merecem destaque, sendo todas as letras em sérvio.
Uma excelente entrada para o rock da "Cortina de Ferro", altamente recomendado para fãs de prog-folk!

Although this album is, first and formost, a collection of excellent individual songs where practically all of them could have been hits, the overall arrangement of this release gives a feel of a unifying idea. Seamless flow from one song to another is perfectly done, in a manner that some later BEATLES albums can surely be evoked as a model. Excellent harmony vocals, nice acoustic but also occasional electric guitars and flute, melodic bass lines, organ and some electronic devices, plus several traditional instruments like "prim" and "sargija" (both akin to mandolin or lute), all that make of this album a true masterpiece. It is hard to pinpoint a single track as best example, but the sample provided here, "Tema za sargiju" ("Theme for a Sargija") is an excellent choice. It is instrumental including sargija, acoustic guitars, percussion and later an electric guitar fuzzed solo. All of that can remind of some JETHRO TULL moments. Prog purists may find "S vremena na vreme" too accessible and song-oriented instead of complexity or experimentation. But, perfection sometimes lies in simplicity, harmony and beauty, of what this album is plentiful.

JAZZ FUSION - JAZZ CARRIERS - Carry On - 1973

Pérola formada em Varsóvia, capital da Polônia. O quinteto Jazz Carriers era liderado pelo conhecido saxofonista local Henryk Miśkiewicz, além de outros músicos que viriam a participar de outros grupos locais ao longo da década, como Zbigniew Jaremko e Zbigniew Kitliński. Apesar de pouco tempo de duração a banda alcançou certo reconhecimento local e lançou um único LP em 1973,  pela Muza.
Carry On é composto por 7 curtas e instrumentais faixas na linha típica do jazz fusion e contemporâneo, além de raras doses de funk. O som é bem executado e dominado pelo excelente e envolvente trabalho dos saxofones, que são acompanhados por bateria, baixo, percussão e teclado, este último proporciona bons momentos, apesar de nenhuma grande novidade no geral. Quanto as faixas, o destaque vai para "Carry On",  "Carriers' Blues", "Frytki" e "Mała Septyma".
Mais uma boa surpresa da cena jazzística polonesa, recomendado!

The quintet Jazz Carriers was formed in Warsaw, capital of Poland, led by well-known saxophonist Henryk Miśkiewicz, and other musicians who would join other local groups throughout the decade, as Zbigniew Jaremko and Zbigniew Kitliński. Although short time of duration, the band reached some local recognition and released a single LP in 1973 by Muza.
"Carry On" consists of seven short and instrumental tracks in the typical line of fusion and contemporary jazz, as well as some funk doses. It's well played and dominated by the excellent and engaging saxophones, which are accompanied by drums, bass, percussion and keyboards, the last provides good moments, although no big news in general. As for the tracks, the focus are on "Carry On", "Carriers' Blues", "Frytki" and "Mała Septyma". Another good surprise of the Polish jazz scene, recommended!

Pérola vinda da Bulgária, formada na capital Sofia em 1978. O grupo Signal (em búlgaro Сигнал) lançou 11 álbuns no total, sendo o mais recente de 2005 e estando na ativa até hoje, com mudanças na formação. Apesar de conquistar popularidade local nos anos 80 e 90, pouco sabem sobre a banda fora do país.  
Posto aqui seu segundo disco de 1980, intitulado Sailing With The Wind (originalmente Попътен Вятър). É composto por 12 curtas faixas de hard rock característico da época, além de algumas baladas, com potentes e barulhentos riffs e solos de guitarra, acompanhados por sintetizadores e bateria/ baixo, trazendo poucos momentos memoráveis. As letras aparecem constantemente e são todas em língua local.
Nada de especial, mas ainda interessante para fãs de hard rock dos anos 80.

The group Signal (in Bulgarian Сигнал) comes from Bulgaria, formed in the capital Sofia in 1978. They released 11 albums in total, the most recent of 2005 and being in active until today, with lineup changes. Despite winning local popularity in the 80s and 90s, they are little-know in other countries.
Post here their second album, released in 1980 and titled "Sailing With The Wind" (originally Попътен Вятър). It consists of 12 short tracks of hard rock characteristic of the time, with some ballads and powerful riffs and solos of guitar, accompanied by synthesizers and drum / bass, bringing a few memorable moments. The lytics appear constantly and are all in the local language. Nothing special, but still interesting for 80's hard rock fans.

Pérola vinda da Romênia, formada no começo dos anos 70 na capital Bucareste. O Romanticii (também conhecido como Formatia Romanticii) nasceu graças ao tecladista Mircea Drăgan, ex-membro da influente banda local Mondial. Tiveram uma curta duração, lançando dois EPs entre 1973 e 74, se desfazendo logo em seguida após a saída de membros para outros grupos, como o próprio Mondial e FFN. 

Posto aqui seu primeiro registro, de 1973, que traz as curtas músicas "Rondelul Cupei De Murano" e "O, rămîi" no lado A e fechando com a excelente "Crăiasa din poveşti". Aqui o destaque vai para o instrumental, onde a banda mostra grande potencial, combinando influências progressivas e psicodélicas no órgão, guitarra e flauta, infelizmente o vocal dá um ar mais comercial, principalmente nas duas primeiras faixas.

Romanticii comes from Romania, formed in the early 70s in the capital Bucharest. Their leader was organist Mircea Drăgan, a former member of the influential local band Mondial.
