HARD/ PROG ROCK - MENDOZA - Same - 1972

Pérola vinda da Suécia, formada na região da Gotlândia Oriental, no começo dos anos 70. O sexteto Mendoza lançou apenas um álbum e compacto, ambos em 1972 e ainda não re-editados, se desfazendo logo em seguida.
O homônimo é composto por 9 faixas, maioria curtas, abrindo com "Jojk", o grande destaque, toda instrumental e dinâmica, onde ouvimos boas passagens de guitarra, trompete, órgão e flauta. Outros momentos altos são "Steamship" e "A Sinful Man", porém a mescla de jazz-rock, progressivo e hard não é mantida em todos os momentos do disco, caindo em tentativas comerciais e mais simplórias ao longo da obra. As letras são todas em inglês.
Irregular, mas ainda sim interessante para fãs de hard prog e fusion dos anos 70.

Mendoza was a band coming from Sweden, formed in the region of Gotland in the early 70's. The sextet released only one album and single, both in 1972 and disbanding soon after.
The self-titled is composed of 9 tracks, most short, opening with "Jojk", the highlight, all instrumental and dynamic, where we hear good passages of guitar, trumpet, organ and flute. Other highlights are "Steamship" and "The Sinful Man", but the great mix of jazz-rock, progressive and hard is not maintained at all the moments, falling in commercial and more simplistic attempts over the record. The lyrics are all in English. Irregular, but still interesting for fans and hard prog fusion 70s.

NORDIC FOLK - SPÆLIMENNINIR Í HOYDØLUM - Same - 1977

Hoje uma postagem diferente para os seguidores do blog. Trago aqui um grupo das pequenas e geladas Ilhas Faroe, localizadas no Atlântico Norte. O grupo Spælimenninir í Hoydølum foi formado na capital Tórshavn em 1974, encurtando o nome para Spælimenninir na década seguinte e lançando vários álbuns desde então, sendo o último de 2003. Vários dos músicos que passaram pela banda seguiram projetos solo, com destaque ao líder Kristian Blak.
O debut de 1977 é dividido em 19 curtas faixas, todas na casa dos 1 ou 2 minutos. O som é puramente folk nórdico, mesclando vertentes tradicionais e contemporâneas, na maioria do tempo instrumental, acústico e muito bem executado, onde ouvimos predomínio do violino, mas também bandolim, tin whistle (flauta), piano e violões. As letras são todas em língua local e com vozes masculinas e femininas.
Bela pedida para quem curte ou quer conhecer música folclórica nórdica.

Spælimenninir í Hoydølum is a lively group of six musicians that play traditional and contemporary folk music from Scandinavia on fiddle, recorder, piano, guitar, mandolin and acoustic bass and vocals. The group’s home base is the Faroe Islands in the far North Atlantic, a small cluster of islands located between Iceland, Norway and Scotland. While they are based in the Faroes, Spælimenninir is not strictly a “Faroese” band, either in personnel or music. Playing together for over 20 years, the line-up includes one native Faroese, one Swede, two Americans and two Danes. This international collaboration has resulted in a varied repertoire which reflects each member’s heritage and illustrates the links between the music traditions of the Scandinavian countries and the United States.

PROG ROCK - ASH - Same - 1979

Pérola obscura vinda da Itália, muito pouco se sabe sobre o grupo Ash. Foram ativos na segunda metade dos anos 70 e lançaram um álbum em 1979, com falsos nomes em inglês (algo até comum entre bandas locais que tentavam se passar por inglesas para conseguir sucesso). Há ainda um compacto de data desconhecida lançado pelo grupo, com letras em italiano.
Posto aqui o disco homônimo, dividido em 6 faixas que trazem rock progressivo próxima a estilos mais comercias da época, longe do som tradicional feito no país, mas ainda assim com suas qualidades. A parte instrumental é competente e merece destaque na obra, principalmente nas marcantes passagens de guitarra e teclados, acompanhados por vocais (masculinos e femininos) em inglês. Quanto as faixas, as melhores são "Easy Game", "The Desert of the Clear" e "What Can I Do".
Um disco que peca pela falta de originalidade, mas ainda pode ser interessante para fãs de prog rock.

Obscure pearl coming from Italy, very little is known about the group Ash. They were active in the second half of the 70s and released an album in 1979 with false names in English (something even common among local bands trying to achieve success). There is also single released by the group with lyrics in Italian, released in an unknown year.
Post here their self-titled, divided into 6 tracks that bring progressive rock close to commercial styles of the time, away from the traditional sound made in the country, yet with some qualities. The instrumental part is competent and key in the work, especially in great passages of guitar and keyboards, accompanied by male/ female vocals in English. As for the tracks, the best are "Easy Game", "The Desert of the Clear" and "What Can I Do". An record with lack of originality, but can still be interesting for prog rock fans.

O grupo Prou Matic foi formado por jovens locais em 1971 e lançou apenas um raro compacto no ano seguinte, sumindo do mapa pouco tempo depois. A banda vem tendo seu trabalho redescoberto graças a recentes compilações. O single contém as músicas "Para Pa Pa", na linha beat/ romântica dos anos 60 e "It Is My World", grande destaque trazendo a essência do rock garageiro e sujo dos anos 70, com vocal rasgado, bateria e guitarras barulhentas. As letras são todas em inglês.

Pérola vinda da Baviera, estado alemão, formado por músicos locais no começo dos anos 70. Apesar de permanecer na cena underground, o grupo Sparifankal ganhou notoriedade no sul do país por suas performances excêntricas e teatrais, participando de festivais e lançando três álbuns entre 1976 e 81, mesmo ano que encerram as atividades. A partir de 1999 a banda faz reuniões esporádicas.
Posto aqui seu primeiro registro, Bayern-Rock, um ao vivo de 1976. É dividido em 8 faixas e difícil de ser classificado, por se aproximar de vários estilos, como acid-folk, rock progressivo, krautrock e até mesmo música experimental. O instrumental é bastante variado, passando por momentos acústicos, viajantes e pesados, contando com guitarra fuzz, violão, flauta e outros como dulcimer, suona e ocarina, nada comuns para bandas de rock. Outro ponto inusitado são as letras, todas em língua bávara e com temática política/ social.
Recomendo principalmente para fãs de acid/ prog folk e krautrock, ouçam e tirem suas conclusões.

Sparifankal was a group from Bavaria, German state, formed by local musicians in the early 70. Despite being in the underground scene, the band gained notoriety in the South of the country for its eccentric and theatrical performances, participating in festivals and releasing three albums between 1976 and 81, the same year that ended the activities. Since 1999 the band makes sporadic meetings.
Post here the first record, Bayern-Rock,  recorded live in 1976. It is divided into 8 tracks and difficult to be classified, close to various styles such as acid-folk, progressive rock, krautrock and even experimental music. The instrumental is quite varied, passing through acoustic trip and heavy moments, with fuzz guitar, acoustic guitar, flute and others like dulcimer, suona and ocarina, nothing common to rock bands. Another unusual point are the lyrics, all in Bavarian language and political / social issues. I recommend especially for fans of acid / prog folk and krautrock, listen and draw your conclusions.

HARD/ BOOGIE ROCK - GLASHAUS - Drinking Man - 1977

Obscura banda vinda da Áustria, formada em meados dos anos 70 pelos irmãos Harry e Dieter Stuempfl . Informações sobre o quinteto Glashaus são escassas, eles provavelmente se estabeleceram em Munique, lá gravando seu único e raro álbum em 1977. Sem sucesso a banda se desfez e alguns de seus membros formaram o grupo Email anos depois.
Drinking Man é um álbum curto, dividido em 10 faixas. Ouvimos aqui mescla tradicional de hard, boogie e country rock do final da década, simples e direto, com destaque para as bons solos e riffs das guitarras, acompanhada por bons momentos de órgão, gaita e bateria. As letras são todas em inglês e com constantes coros. Destaque para "Drinking Man", "The Waiting Game" e "Vertigo".
Apesar de um pouco comercial e nada extraordinário, merece atenção de fãs de boogie e country rock.

A groovy upbeat rock album from Austria, sung in English. Not progressive, with some cuts verging on hard rock, there is some good organ work. The opener Shine On Medas is Status Quo-like boogie, and there is a southern/boogie feel to most other tracks. The Waiting Game and Vertigo are my heavy picks.
Nothing extraordinary, but notable as a rare example of it's kind to come from Austria at the time, a country which seems to have missed out entirely on hard rock and heavy metal in the '70s, but did have a decent punk/new wave scene at the tail-end.

Obscuro trio formado em Paris, capital francesa, entre o fim dos anos 60 e começo dos 70. A banda Triptyque lançou apenas um raro compacto em 1970 pela Opaline, após de desfazer o guitarrista e líder Alain Renaud partiu para carreira solo, lançando 3 álbuns na mesma década. É composto pelas duas curtas faixas "If You Are In A Bad Mood" e "Don't Worry", ambas na pegada típica da época, primariamente influenciadas por rock psicodélico, mas também progressivo, hard e até blues. Destaque para a guitarra de Renaud que traz momentos de peso ao som, além dos vocais equilibrados em inglês.

SYMPHONIC PROG - OCTOPUS - Thaerie Wiighen - 1981

Pérola vinda da Noruega, formada em Haugesund, ao norte do país. Liderados pelo tecladista Tore Aarnes, o trio Octopus lançou um único álbum em 1981 de forma independente (até hoje não relançado) e desapareceu.
O álbum Thaerie Wiighen é conceitual e baseado na obra homônima do poeta e dramaturgo local Henrik Ibsen, trazendo 8 faixas de rock progressivo sinfônico e ainda folk-prog, próximo de obras da metade dos anos 70. O competente trabalho de Aarnes no piano, órgão e sintetizadores é destaque, bem acompanhado por guitarra, violão e flauta, dando um clima mais melódico na maioria do tempo. Outro ponto marcante são as letras em norueguês, dando um "charme" a obra.
Longe de uma obra-prima, mas boa pedida para fãs de prog sinfônico e escandinavo.

Octopus was a band from Norway, formed in Haugesund, north of the country. Led by keyboardist Tore Aarnes, the trio released one album in 1981 privately (not reissued yet) and disappeared.
"Thaerie Wiighen" is a album is conceptual and based on the homonymous work of the poet and playwright Henrik Ibsen, bringing 8 symphonic prog tracks, with touches of folk/ art rock, close to mid-70's albums. Aarnes' work in piano, organ and synthesizers is highlight, accompanied by acoustic guitar, guitar and flute, giving a more melodic mood most of the time. Another striking point is the lyrics in Norwegian, giving a "charm" the work.

Pérola obscura vinda da Alemanha, muito pouco se sabe sobre o grupo Jessica. Lançaram um único e raro álbum em 1975 (apesar de alguns sites trazerem como 1973) pelo pequeno selo Knöterich e sumiram do mapa.
Posto aqui o disco Jessica (Bearbeitung von Reger Op. 89/27), composto por 4 faixas totalmente instrumentais, sendo duas longas e duas curtas. O som é próximo do progressivo, em momentos sinfônico e outros fusion, mas longe experimentações do Krautrock, guiado por belo trabalho no piano e sintetizadores de Henner Herdick, acompanhado por bateria e guitarra "discreta".

Jessica was a very obscure band formed in Germany during the early 70s, they released only one rare album in 1975.
Piano driven symphonic rock. One of the few German bands to have an almost Italian sound in places, like Festa Mobile for example. Has a jazzy lounge feel to it with plenty of piano and toned down electric guitar. Also features quite a bit of acoustic guitar. A nice title, in league with bands like Tetragon and Hax Cel.

HARD ROCK - TARANTULA - Angel of Stone / Tarantula Dance - 1972

Pérola obscura formada em Amsterdã, capital da Holanda, em 1971. O grupo foi formado originalmente com o nome Tantalus e no ano seguinte mudou para Tarantula, e assim como tantas outras bandas locais lançou apenas um raro compacto. Este traz as músicas "Angel of Stone" e "Tarantula Dance", ambas na casa dos 3 minutos e que mesclam estilos típicos do começo dos anos 70, principalmente hard e brass/ funk rock. O instrumental é bastante dinâmico, com guitarra barulhenta, metais (trompete e saxofone), percussão, flauta e vocais rasgados.
Com certeza uma banda muito competente e que poderia perfeitamente lançar um LP na época.

Tarantula was a band formed in Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, in 1971. The group was originally named Tantalus and in the next year changed definitely, and like so many other local bands has just launched a rare single. This brings the songs "Angel of Stone" and "Tarantula Dance", both with 3 minutes and mixing typical early 70s styles, as hard and brass / funk rock. The instrumental is quite dynamic, with noisy guitar, brass (trumpet and saxophone), percussion, flute and good vocals. Certainly a very competent group and that could have released a LP at the time.
