Raridade máxima vinda da Suíça! Quase não existem informações sobre o trio Life, a banda lançou um único LP em 1973 de forma privada e com poucas prensagens, sumindo do mapa logo em seguida. O baixista Werner Ammann integrou o grupo Swiss Horns anos depois. When It Comes to the Push traz 4 músicas longas e sem nome, sendo duas acima dos 10 minutos e podemos ouvir aplausos ao final, indicando serem gravações ao vivo. A música consiste em extensos e viajantes jams, totalmente instrumentais, que passam por psicodelia, progressivo e hard rock, liderado pelo ótimo trabalho na guitarra (nas faixas 1 e 3) e órgão elétrico (faixas 2 e 4) de Urs Frey, sempre bem acompanhado por bateria/ baixo.
Apesar da qualidade da gravação não ser das melhores, este registro certamente agradará fãs de obscuridades prog/ psych dos anos 70.
Obscure gem coming from Switzerland. There is almost no information about the trio Life, the band released only one LP in 1973 privately and with few pressings, disappearing soon after. The bassist Werner Ammann joined the group Swiss Horns years later. "When It Comes to the Push" brings four long and untitled songs, two over 10 minutes and where we can hear applause at the end, indicating that are live recordings. The music consists of long and trip jams, totally instrumental, passing by psychedelia, progressive and hard rock, with great guitar (on tracks 1 and 3) and organ work (tracks 2 and 4) of Urs Frey leading, always accompanied by drums / bass. Although the recording quality is not the best, this record will sure please fans of prog / psych 70s obscurities.

Pérola vinda de Kirkenes, cidade que fica ao nordeste da Noruega. Andersen / Pleym foi um duo local de curta duração e que levava o nome do seus dois jovens membros, Rolf Mareno Andersen e Kjell Arne Pleym, ambas viriam a formar o St. Helena pouco tempo depois. Lançaram um único álbum em 1971, conhecido como o mais raro do país, com apenas 250 cópias e permaneceram na obscuridade total até 2010, quando este ganhou nova edição. Have Your Own Feeling, Have Your Own Way é composto por 10 curtas faixas que podem ser classificadas como rock e pop psicodélico, tendo como principais referências bandas da década anterior, como Beatles e Procol Harum. As canções são na maioria do tempo melódicas, onde podemos destacar algumas boas passagens de órgão e guitarra (como em "Hang Him Don't Let Him Suffer" e "Life Is Allowed to Last"), acompanhadas por vocais em inglês e bateria/ baixo.
Apesar de um pouco datado, ainda oferece bom material para fãs de psicodelia pop/ rock dos anos 60.
With an edition of only 250 copies, it can be claimed that this record is probably the rarest private press out of Norway (and the most unknown). The Andersen/Pleym-Group was basically a duo which recorded their sole album in their local school with the support of some friends. This introduction might suggest that you have to expect another record of well known cover-versions but this is definitely not the case since all featured songs are original compositions by the group. And great songs they are, melodic and natural, with a Singer/Songwriter-touch but with full instrumentation including organ, guitar and drums, bearing a strong Beatles-flavour. All the songs have been carefully remastered in order to leave the authentic feel and spirit. This reissue comes with 3 Bonustracks plus two inserts.

Pérola formada em Helsinque, capital da Filândia, em 1974. O trio Rock'N'Roll Band lançou apenas um LP e dois outros compactos no ano seguinte, em sua meteórica duração (quando o álbum foi lançado o grupo já havia se desfeito, provocando pouca divulgação na época). Recentemente trabalhos ainda não lançados da banda estão surgindo, assim como relançamentos.
O disco Everybody Needs Dance Music Sometimes é composto por 14 curtas faixas (incluindo dois bônus de 2004 e alguns covers), geralmente classificadas como blues rock, porém ouvimos uma dose grande de rock clássico, hard e R&B. O som é simples e direto, assim como o instrumental, guiado pela guitarra com riffs e solos marcantes, acompanhada por bateria/ baixo e vocal em inglês, que não me agrada tanto.
Nada de essencial, porém interessante para fãs de blues e boogie rock.
Rock'N'Roll Band was a trio formed in Helsinki, capital of Finland, in 1974. They released only one LP and two other singles in the following year, during their meteoric duration (when the album was released the group had already disbanded). The album "Everybody Needs Dance Music Sometimes" consists of 14 short tracks (including two bonus 2004 and some covers), usually classified as blues rock, but we hear influences of hard, classic rock, and R&B. The sound is simple and straightforward, as well as the instrumental, guided by the guitar with riffs and memorable solos, accompanied by drums / bass and vocals in English, which I don't like so much. Nothing essential, but interesting to blues and boogie rock fans.

Barney Rachabane é um músico sul-africano, nascido em 1946 em Alexandra, parte de Joanesburgo. É considerado um dos principais nomes da cena local nos anos 60 e 70, participando de várias bandas (com destaque ao Roots), apesar do pouco reconhecimento dado aos artistas negros na época. Possui vários discos solos, apesar da discografia completa ser imprecisa, e ainda se mantem na ativa.
Posto aqui seu primeiro álbum solo, de 1976, intitulado Sweet Matara e com participação dos músicos do Richard Jon Smith e The Rockets. Descrido pela Black Music Productions como um dos melhores álbuns de jazz/ funk já feitos no país, é totalmente instrumental e dividido em 3 excelente faixas, sendo duas acima dos 10 minutos. A mescla de ritmos africanos e funk ao jazz produz um som bastante colorido e dinâmico, onde ouvimos ótimas passagens de metais, órgão, guitarra, bateria, flauta e claro o saxofone de Barney, sempre presente.
Mais um belo exemplo da riqueza musical "escondida" pela África, recomendado para fãs de jazz funk.
Barney Rachabane is a South African musician, born in 1946 in Alexandra, Johannesburg. It is considered one of the top names in the local scene in the 60s and 70s, participating in several bands, despite the little recognition given to black artists at the time. He released several solo albums, despite the complete discography be inaccurate, and still keeps playing. Post here his first solo album, 1976, titled Sweet Matara with the participation of musicians from Richard Jon Smith and The Rockets. Described by Black Music Productions as one of the best jazz/funk albums ever made in the country, it is completely instrumental and divided into 3 great tracks, two over 10 minutes. A mix of African rhythms and funk to jazz produces a very colorful and dynamic sound, where we hear great passages of metals, organ, guitar, drums, flute and Barney's saxophone, that's always present. Another fine example of "hidden" musical treasures in Africa, recommended for jazz funk fans.
Pérola obscura vinda da Zâmbia, o músico Mike Nyoni foi um dos criadores do grupo Born Free, que contava com Chris Mbewe (ex-vocalista do WITCH). Após sair da banda, partiu para carreira solo, lançando aparentemente apenas este álbum em 1978, que teve versões no país africano e também França. Pouco mais se sabe sobre a vida e carreira do artista. I Can't Understand You é dividido em 10 curtas faixas cheias de groove com influências principais de funk e até um pouco de disco e baladas, porém sem deixar de lado as raízes do Zamrock. O instrumental é simples e direto, guiado pela guitarra, distorcida em alguns momentos, acompanhando o bom vocal de Nyoni. Quanto as faixas destaque para "I Can't Understand You", "Highway" e "Africa".
Uma versão mais suave do Zamrock, porém ainda recomendada para fãs do movimento.
Mike Nyoni is a musician from Zambia, he was one of the members of the group Born Free, which featured Chris Mbewe (former lead singer of WITCH). After leaving the band, he had a short solo career, recording apparently only this album in 1978, which was released in the African country and France. Little else is known about his life and career. "I Can't Understand You" is divided into 10 short tracks with a lot of groove and influenced by funk and even a little of disco and ballads, but without neglecting the zamrock roots. The instrumental is simple and straightforward, guitar-driven, at times fuzz, following the good Nyoni's vocals. My favorities tracks are "I Can not Understand You," "Highway" and "Africa". A softer version of zamrock, but still recommended to the fans of the style.

Ipi 'N Tombia foi um projeto formado em Joanesburgo, na África do Sul, idealizado por Bertha Egnos no começo dos anos 70. Este grupo contava com Margaret Singana, que viria a ser uma das vozes mais populares do país na década, e resultou em um álbum e um musical que rodou pela África, Europa e Estados Unidos, se desfazendo alguns anos mais tarde.
Posto aqui o disco The Warrior, de 1973, que conta a história de um homem que sai de um vilarejo no interior e tenta a vida na cidade grande, porém no fim da vida se lamenta por não poder deixar nada ao seu filho. É composto por 10 curtas faixas de puro afrobeat, mesclando ritmos tradicionais zulus e outros como funk, soul e rock, captando o sentimento pulsante e animado da música africana, refletido no instrumental dinâmico, rico em percussões, metais e teclados. Porém aqui o grande destaque fica para o vocal soberano de Singana, acompanhado em vários momentos por coros, misturando inglês com línguas locais e criticas a política segregacionista da época.
Apesar de pouco rock, esta pérola vai agradar muito fãs de música africana!
From the opening drumbeats of 'The Warrior' you are encaptured by a sound that does well to capture the vastness, mystery and beauty of Africa. As the sleeve notes say, the style of songs range "from Traditional Folklore to the more modern Township Jive", mixing in a modern rock beat to create a collection of great African Rock tunes. There is a stong political commentary on track like 'The Warrior' (about the Battle of Bloodriver between the Boers and the Zulu) and 'The Digger' in which a mine labourer laments the fact that despite working all his life he has nothing to pass on to his son. These more serious tracks are offset by the upbeat celebrations of life in 'Mama Tembu's Wedding' and 'Soweto by Night'. What is perhaps the most striking thing about this album, however is the vocals of Singana. The clarity and strength of her voice make her the star of the show. There is something special about her voice that compliments the music perfectly. It is the sound of a confident young woman giving her all. This is especially shown on tracks such as the title track and 'Ipi 'N Tombia' (translated as where is/are the girl(s) if my smattering of Zulu serves me correctly), while 'Mother Mary' finds her in a more spiritual voice which she handles with maturity. The synergy of this collection of great tunes and brilliant vocal performances is completed by producers Billy Forrest and Lofty Shultz, creating this essential South African gem which gained it an international release.

O grupo Aktion surgiu no começo dos anos 70 com o nome Action 13, lançando neste primeiro momentos dois compactos e anos mais tarde, já usando seu nome definitivo, outros dois LPs. Apesar de certo sucesso local, fazendo shows pela região, a banda se desfez e alguns de seus membros se juntaram ao The Stormmers e One World. Groove the Funk é o primeiro álbum dos caras, lançado em 1975 pela Clover. É composto por 9 faixas, maioria curtas, que trazem um primoroso trabalho baseado na mescla de afrobeat, funk e psicodelia, nos padrões da época. O trabalho instrumental é bem construído e empolgante, onde ouvimos a guitarra distorcida tomando frente, acompanhada pelo trabalho consistente de teclado, percussão e vocais sempre em inglês. Quanto as faixas, destaque para "Groove the Funk", "Sugar Daddy" e "Masquerade", apesar de poucos momentos fracos. Recomendado para fãs de rock e funk africano.
Aktion was a band formed in Warri, in the southwest of Nigeria. The group emerged in the early 70s under the name Action 13, recorded two singles in that moment and years later, already using its definitive name, two LPs. Despite some local success, touring in the region, the band disbanded and some of its members joined The Stormmers and One World later. "Groove the Funk" is their first album, released in 1975 by Clover. It consists of 9 tracks, most short, bringing a great work based on afrobeat, funk and psychedelia, following many local bands. The instrumental work is well constructed and exciting, where we hear fuzz guitar, accompanied by consistent keyboard, percussion and vocals (always in English). As for the tracks, the best are "Groove the Funk", "Sugar Daddy" and "Masquerade", despite a few weak moments. Recommended for fans of Afro funk and rock.

O cantor Francis Mbarga nasceu por volta de 1970 em Camarões, mas ainda jovem se mudou para a França, lá seu pai trabalhava como produtor de bandas africanas e foi onde começou sua meteórica carreira na música. Gravou dois discos em 1977 e 78 na Europa, com menos de 10 anos de idade, acompanhado por músicos dos dois países e logo depois deixou sua carreira de artista. Ravissante Baby é seu primeiro LP de 1977, relançado no ano passado pela Hot Casa. O álbum é curto e composto por apenas duas faixas na casa dos 12 minutos, o lado A traz a música que dá nome ao disco, um som bem típico do oeste africano e ritmos como Afrobeat e highlife, se destacando a guitarra de Toto Guillaume, percussão e os vocais "ingênuos" de Mbarga, falando sobre natureza. "Look Up in the Sky" está presente no lado B e a minha favorita, pois é um funk rock cativante, com bons metais, linha de baixo e principalmente sintetizadores, dando um ar "space" e viajante a canção, novamente o vocal infantil aparece (em francês) e mostra ser o grande diferencial desta obra.
Único e muito competente, pérola recomendada para fãs de funk e afro-rock.
Rare funk and avant-garde soul from a seven-year-old kid singer featuring the best musicians of France and the Cameroonian diaspora, recorded in Paris in 1977. The album contains two nicely dramatic tracks: "Ravissante Baby (Negro Phasing)" is a long, hypnotic, funky soukous track with a tremendous lead guitar and a long spoken-word and soulful kid vocal about the beauty of nature; "Look Up in the Sky (Negro Nature)" is a stretched funk groove with psych synth by Michel Morose, bubbling bassline by the great Victor Edimo, the famous Toto Guillaume on guitar, and a brilliant poetic lyric by Francis the Great, who at that time studied in Ménilmontant, Paris. Originally produced by his father, a great impresario of African artists in Paris during the '70s, and coordinated by his mother, this album is unique, fresh, and almost unclassifiable. Pérola muito obscura vinda da República Islâmica da Mauritânia, no oeste africano. O país não teve nenhuma gravadora nos anos 60, 70 ou 80, nem mesmo estatal, e a maioria dos artistas só se apresentavam em celebrações religiosas, casamentos, etc. Por isso sua música era quase totalmente desconhecida no resto do mundo, com objetivo de trazer antigos sons da época de volta a vida, o americano Matthew Lavoie foi responsável por uma extensa pesquisa, comprando cerca de 700 fitas cassetes em mercados locais e selecionando dezenas de faixas na compilação Wallahi Le Zein!! - Wezin, Jakwar And Guitar Boogie From The Islamic Republic Of Mauritania, lançada em CD duplo em 2011, de forma limitada pela Latitude.
A coletânea é dividida em 28 faixas de vários artistas e conjuntos locais, sendo os principais estilos Moorish e Tuareg, ambos com fortes ligações na música tradicional da região. A música é básica e rudimentar, percussão e instrumentos locais como ardin e tidinit estão presentes, porém a grande protagonista das músicas é a guitarra elétrica, repetitiva, barulhenta, hipnotizante e em vários momentos distorcida (wah-wah é um dos exemplos), mostrando uma fusão de psicodelia ocidental com os ritmos citados acima. As letras são todas cantadas em dialetos locais e a qualidade da gravação é novamente o ponto baixo, porém não poderíamos esperar algo diferente.
Ouçam e tirem suas conclusões, certamente vale uma audição para aqueles que buscam novos horizontes na música.
Compiler Matthew Lavoie has spent endless time and effort in compiling this double CD paying tribute to the Mauritanian nomadic based Haratine/Beydane electric guitarists whom you only hear playing at invited occasions like weddings, birthdays, baptism and political rallies. Falling in love with the music he made the effort of making some studio recordings with some of the musicians too but the effect wasn’t the same. Instead he compiled this double CD from around 700 tapes he collected on the local markets. Most of these tapes were taped primitively on the occasion like little souvenirs; most of them were of too bad a quality. However, when taking out the highlights he managed to make the magic of the music reappear. A two CD compilation in this way isn’t really too long. You thoroughly are dragged into it like with a hypnotic event. The music is just slightly comparable to the electric recordings from the Touaregs, which Sublime Frequencies reissued before. Here is only more effort put into in it, having only kept the great moments of the recordings. There are slower improvisations, more distorted, parts with more wahwah effects, with singing over it, in solo voices, dual voice or some in group or with backing vocals, the percussion is handclaps and a steady rhythm on percussion box-like hand percussions. There’s a sort of Arabesque singing performed with the guitar able to do the same things as well. An important document of historical and musical value.

Começando mais uma jornada pelos subterrâneos da música e principalmente rock africano dos anos 70, encontramos esta pérola formada em Porto Novo, capital do Benin, pequeno país no oeste do continente. A banda Ogassa lançou possivelmente apenas um álbum, tendo relativo sucesso na região (chegando a excursionar com a Orchestre Poly- Rythmo de Cotonou), infelizmente seus membros morreram em um acidente de carro e o grupo se desfez precocemente. Ogassa Original Vol. 1, lançado originalmente em 1978 e reeditado pela Hot Casa em 2013, é dividido em 4 longas faixas que totalizam pouco mais de meia hora. Gravado na Nigéria, o som acaba lembrando nomes do país vizinho, trazendo aquela mescla típica da época entre funk, rock psicodélico e ritmos africanos (o Afrobeat), com momentos instrumentais prolongados, onde podemos ressaltar a guitarra, percussão e órgão primitivo que fica sempre presente ao fundo. O vocal aparece na maioria do tempo em coros ou na forma de interlocuções, com letras em inglês ou línguas locais.
Interessante e recomendado para fãs de afrobeat e afro funk.

The sextet released probably only one album, with relative success in the region (touring with the Orchestre Poly- rhythm of Cotonou), unfortunately the members died in a car accident and the group broke up early. "Ogassa Original Vol. 1", originally released in 1978 and reissued by Hot Casa in 2013, is divided into four long tracks totaling just over half an hour. Recorded in Nigeria, the sound remembers names of the neighboring country, bringing that typical mix of funk, psychedelic rock and African rhythms (Afrobeat), with long instrumental moments, when we can good guitar, percussion and primitive organ that is always present in the background. The vocal appears most of the time in choirs or in the form of dialogues, with lyrics in English and local languages. Interesting and recommended for afrobeat / funk fans.
