PROG ROCK - TEMPO E MODO - Um Mundo A Construir - 1980

Uma das pérolas mais raras já vindas de Portugal, o grupo Tempo e Modo foi formado nos anos 70 em Torres Novas. Lançaram um único álbum em 1980, que teve cerca de 300 cópias (apesar de alguns falarem em 1000), e se desfizeram logo depois. Recentemente a banda voltou para alguns shows pelo país.
Um Mundo A Construir é composto por 8 faixas curtas de rock progressivo e com mescla interessante entre referências locais no estilo durante a década anterior (Tantra, José Cid e outros) e leves doses de neo-prog típico dos anos 80. O instrumental é destaque, bastante melódico e guiado pelo consistente trabalho da guitarra, sintetizadores e piano. As letras são todas em português e seguem tom de crítica em alguns momentos.

Given that they are of Portuguese origin and supposedly from 1980, I had presumed the album would be a symphonic fusion along the lines of Tantra and Ananga Ranga (which would have been great as well). But that's not really the case at all. Primarily it's a mixture of instrumental symphonic progressive rock combined with a distinct new wave element, that tilts the album towards the neo-prog camp. This latter style, as I've noted in prior posts, was quite a good genre in its early stages, and Tempo e Modo are an excellent example of it. Think early 80s IQ / Pendragon / Twelfth Night. The instrumental tracks are the highlight here, with a strong melodic content coupled with excellent guitar and keyboard runs. A very nice surprise. This is the kind of album Musea used to release in their prime. I keep hoping, perhaps naively so, that they will dip back into the reissue market.

JAZZ FUSION - JIŘÍ JELÍNEK - Jiří Jelínek In Memoriam (Etc… 1976 - 1977) - 1987

Pérola vinda da antiga Tchecoslováquia, Jiří Jelínek era um músico nascida em Praga (atual capital da República Tcheca) em 1954. Em 1976, junto de Vladimír Mišík, formou o grupo Etc..., e apesar de uma promissora carreira local, sua frágil saúde mental o levou ao suicídio em outubro de 1977, aos 23 anos de idade. Sem lançar nada na época, apenas uma década depois antigas gravações suas com a banda saíram em 2 EPs.
Jiří Jelínek In Memoriam é composto por apenas 5 curtas faixas gravadas entre 1976 e 77. A música é principalmente jazz fusion, com leves pitadas de prog rock, seguindo a tendência da região na época, sendo na maioria do tempo instrumental e suave, onde destaca-se bons momentos na guitarra, acompanhados de forma competente pela bateria e também violino, além do vocal em tcheco.
Mais uma pérola perdida na Cortina de Ferro, recomendado para fãs de jazz fusion e prog.

Jiří Jelínek was a musician born in Prague  (current capital of the Czech Republic) in 1954, in the former Czechoslovakia. In 1976, along with Vladimir Misik, he formed the group Etc ..., and despite a promising career, his fragile mental health led him to suicide in October 1977, when he was 23 years old. Without releasing anything at the time, only a decade after his old recordings with the band came out in 2 EPs.
Jiří Jelínek In Memoriam consists of only 5 short tracks recorded between 1976 and 77. The music is mostly jazz fusion with some touches of prog rock, following the trend of local bands at the time. It's instrumental most of the time, guided by the guitar, accompanied by the drums and also violin, in addition to vocals in Czech. Another gem lost behind the Iron Curtain, recommended for jazz fusion and prog fans.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK - BOWL - Same - 1975-77

Pérola obscura vinda da Holanda. Muito pouco se sabe sobre o grupo Bowl, eles não chegaram a lançar nenhum álbum nos anos em atividade, apenas antigas gravações ao vivo em 1975 e 77, nas cidades de Kuinre e Emmeloord, saíram em CD, porém não possuo informações sobre esse lançamento e sua data.
O homônimo é composto por 13 faixas de rock progressivo, com influências sinfônicas acentuadas e de rock clássico, lembrando nomes como Kayak, Alquin e Camel. O som é muito competente e até surpreendente em alguns instantes, combinando ótimo trabalho nos teclados de Johan Spiering (órgão e sintetizadores) e guitarra "refinada", proporcionando atmosfera viajante e reluzente. O vocal, todo em inglês, agrada e também não fica atrás.
Com raros momentos fracos, essa é uma ótima descoberta para fãs de rock progressivo e sinfônico.

The group Bowl was formed in the Netherlands. Very little is known about the band, they did not release any album in the years of activity, just old live recordings in 1975 and 77 in the cities of Kuinre and Emmeloord, came out on CD, but I do not have information about this release or the year.
The self-titled brings 13 tracks of progressive rock, with symphonic and classic rock influences, remembering names like Kayak, Alquin and Camel. The sound is very competent and even surprising in a few moments, combining great work on Johan Spiering's keyboards (organ and synthesizers) and "refined" guitar, providing trippy and shiny atmosphere. The vocals, all in English, all also very good. With few weak moments, this is a great discovery for progressive and symphonic rock fans.

PROGRESSIVE/ JAZZ ROCK - RAYMOND VINCENT - Metronomics - 1972

Raymond Vincent é um músico belga, conhecido na cena local durante os anos 70. Ainda na década de 60 se juntou ao grupo Wallace Collection até seu fim em 1971, passando por um breve momento solo no ano seguinte, lançado na época um raro registro na França com outros artistas dos dois países. Na mesma época formou a famosa banda Esperanto junto do tecladista Bruno Libert.
O álbum Metronomics, de 1972, é composto por 11 curtas faixas que mesclam diversos gêneros, tendo como referência a cena de Canterbury, rock progressivo, jazz-fusion e folk, em alguns pontos já lembrando o som do Esperanto. A parte instrumental se destaca, variando em momentos melancólicos e outros agitados, sempre guiado pelo excelente trabalho de Raymond no violino e ainda teclados, flauta e percussão (não há presença de guitarra). As letras são todas em inglês e não me agradam tanto.
Consistente e muito bem trabalhado, essa pérola merece atenção de fãs de prog, fusion e Canterbury.

Raymond Vincent is a Belgian musician, known in the local scene during the 70s. He joined the group Wallace Collection in the 60s until its end in 1971, having a brief solo moment in the following year, releasing at the time a rare record in France with other artists from both countries. At the same time he formed the famous band Esperanto with the keyboardist Bruno Libert.
The album Metronomics, 1972, consists of 11 short tracks that mix different genres, with reference to the Canterbury scene, progressive rock, jazz-fusion and folk in some points, already remembering the sound of Esperanto. The instrumental part is highlight, with some melancholic and other happy moments, always guided by Raymond's excellent work on the violin and also keyboards, flute and percussion (no guitar presence). The lyrics are all in English and I do not like so much.
Consistent and very well done, this gem deserves attention to prog, fusion and Canterbury fans.

PSYCH ROCK - GRIFFIN - I Am The Noise In Your Head / Don't You Know - 1969

Pérola formada em Newcastle, cidade da Inglaterra, no final dos anos 60. O grupo Griffin contava com ex-membros do Alan Price Set, The Happy Magazine e Skip Bifferty, porém não conseguiu sucesso e se desfez rapidamente, lançando apenas um compacto em 1969, nos EUA e Inglaterra. Após o final da banda, alguns de seus integrantes formaram o Bell + Arc e Alan White entrou para o Yes anos seguintes.
O single traz as duas curtas canções "I Am The Noise In Your Head" e "Don't You Know". O destaque vai para a primeira música, combinando hard e psicodelia típicos da época, com momentos marcantes da guitarra ácida e teclado, já a segunda é uma bonita e acústica balada com violões e piano.

Griffin was a band formed in Newcastle, England, in the late 60s. The group had former members of Alan Price Set, The Happy Magazine and Bifferty Skip, but didn't achieve success and disbanded quickly, releasing only a single in 1969 in the US and England. After the end of the band, some of its members formed the Bell + Arc and Alan White joined the Yes some years later.
The single brings the two short songs "I Am The Noise In Your Head" and "Don't You Know". The highlight is the first song, combining hard rock and psychedelia typical of the time, with important moments of acid guitar and keys, while the second is a beautiful acoustic ballad with acoustic guitars and piano.

PROG/ KRAUTROCK - EXPONENT - Upside Down - 2014 (1974)

Atendendo a pedidos, trago ao blog uma das grandes descobertas do rock alemão nos último anos. Formada em Wuppertal no começo dos anos 70, o grupo Exponent chegou a dividir palco com nomes como Novalis e gravou um álbum em 1974, porém este não foi lançado na época, ao mesmo tempo do final do quarteto. Apenas 40 anos depois a Koru Suro e Garden of Delights recuperaram o material, que teve versões em CD e LP.
Upside Down é dividido em 5 longas faixas (contando com uma suite de quase 20 minutos e outro bônus ao vivo do CD) que trazem uma sonoridade bem próxima de outras bandas conterrâneas da época, variando entre progressivo sinfônico e krautrock. O instrumental é predominante, com destaque para os teclados de Frank (órgão, sintetizadores e piano) proporcionando alguns momentos mais sombrios e outros agitados, acompanhado muito bem pela bateria, guitarra e vocais em inglês.  

This is more German symphonic than classic Krautrock, imagine Spektakel as played by Eloy. This is definitely a dream for keyboard fans, and there's oodles of organ, Moog, electric piano, and mellotron to absorb and treasure. While there is guitar, it definitely plays second banana to the awesome banks of keyboards. And, as indicated prior, the album is geared more towards the symphonic progressive genre with plenty of meter breaks and compositional acumen. This is not a atmospheric Krautrock zone out. Side 2 is a bit more of a blues based jam, and also possesses a slightly lesser sound quality, but still no less awesome of a listening experience - perhaps calling out a more classic German sound ala Sixty-Nine. On the topic of sound quality, it's very good for an archival recording, so be sure to keep expectations in check.

FOLK ROCK - ACADEMY - Same - 1972

Pérola obscura vinda da França, porém apenas Jacques Gassard nasceu no país. Os outros integrantes do quarteto Academy eram de origem americana, italiana e grega. O grupo foi ativo no começo dos anos 70 e lançou apenas um raro álbum em 1972, se desfazendo logo depois. Geny Detto e Ann Calvert participaram de mais alguns projetos locais, porém sem grande sucesso.
O homônimo é dividido em 10 faixas de folk rock, com leves toques de psicodelia e lembrando nomes ingleses da época. O instrumental é basicamente acústico e bem trabalhado, onde predominam os violões e percussão, com alguns bons pontos de guitarra e flauta. O vocal feminino de Ann é outro destaque, primoroso e se encaixando muito bem ao som e sempre em inglês.
Uma obra que merece atenção de todos os fãs de folk rock e vocal feminino.

Academy was a group formed in France, but only Jacques Cassard was born in the country. The other members of the quartet were American, Italian and Greek. The group was active in the early 70s and has just launched a rare album in 1972, disbanding soon after. 
The selt-titled is divided into 10 folk rock songs, with light touches of psychedelia and remembering English bands of the time. The instrument is basically acoustic and dominated by acoustic guitars and percussion, with some good points of guitar and flute. The female vocals of Ann are another highlight, impressive and fitting very well to sound and always in English. A work that deserves attention from all folk rock and female vocals fans.

PSYCH/ PROG ROCK - GREENWICH PARK - Tobacco Road / I Went to My Baby - 1971

Pérola obscura formada na Itália no começo dos anos 70. A banda Greenwich Park lançou um único compacto em 1971 pela Splendid, na vizinha Suíça. Sua história e membros são desconhecidos. O single traz duas curtas canções, abrindo com uma versão de "Tobbaco Road", onde ouvimos boa passagem de órgão e saxofone, acompanhando o vocal rasgado. Porém o destaque fica para a sombria "I Went to My Baby", mesclando rock psicodélico e progressivo com flauta, órgão e percussão, novamente o vocal em inglês se sobressai. Infelizmente muito curto, mas ainda sim um bom registro de prog/ psych.

Obscure gem formed in Italy in the early 70s. The band Greenwich Park released only one single in 1971 by Splendid, recorded in Switzerland. Its history and members are unknown. The single has two short songs, opening with a version of "Tobbaco Road", where we hear good passages of organ and saxophone, following the heavy vocal. But the highlight is the dark "I Went to My Baby", mixing psychedelic and progressive rock with flute, organ and percussion, again with English vocals. Unfortunately too short, but still a good record of prog / psych. rock

COUNTRY ROCK - NAILBAND - The Most Remarkable Nailband - 1972

Pérola obscura vinda da Suécia. Muito pouco se sabe sobre o trio Nailband, lançando apenas um álbum em 1972, sem nenhuma nova edição, e com participação de outros dois músicos locais. O vocalista e líder Peter Lundblad seguiu carreira solo nos anos seguintes, indicando um fim prematura da banda.
The Most Remarkable Nailband é composto por 11 faixas curtas, sendo um cover de "Ohio", do Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, mostrando a influência principal do grupo: o country rock, mesclado ainda com alguns lampejos de folk e prog rock. A música é na maioria do tempo tranquila e acústica, típicas do estilo, guiada por violão, percussão e piano, com algumas passagens mais firmes de guitarra e órgão. As letras são todas em inglês e carregadas de sotaque.
Nenhuma novidade dentro do estilo, porém ainda recomendo para fãs de country rock.

Nailband was an obscure trio from Sweden. Very little is known about the group, they released only one album in 1972, with no new edition and participation of two other local musicians. The lead singer Peter Lundblad had a solo career in the following years, indicating a premature end of the band.
"The Most Remarkable Nailband" consists of 11 short tracks, including a cover of "Ohio", by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, showing the main influence of the group: country rock, with light touches of folk and prog rock. Music is most of the time quiet and acoustic, typical of the style, guided by acoustic guitar, percussion and piano, with some good passages of guitar and organ. The lyrics are all in English and  accent loaded. Nothing new in the style, but still recommend to country rock fans.

PROG/ PSYCH ROCK - MASALA DOSA - Masala Dosa 77 - 1979

Pérola vinda da Dinamarca, formada na capital Copenhague em 1975. O quarteto Masala Dosa surgiu por ex-membros de grupos locais como Hyldemor e Bifrost e lançou apenas um raro álbum em 1979, sem grande destaque na cena local. Após mudanças na formação a banda encerrou as atividades, no início dos anos 80.
Masala Dosa 77 é dividido em 6 faixas difíceis de classificar, passando principalmente pelo rock progressivo e psicodélico, porém com pitadas de fusion e até space rock, lembrando nomes locais do começo da década, como Culpeper's Orchard. Vocais em dinamarquês aparecem nas músicas do lado A, porém o destaque fica no instrumental, geralmente melódico e onde se destaca o grande trabalho na guitarra de Vagn Carlsen, acompanhado por violão, sintetizadores e até mesmo sitar. Quanto as faixas, as melhores são "Pink Cosmos", "Drøm eller hva" e a viajante "Cykelløbet".
Ótima pedida para fãs de rock progressivo e psicodélico, recomendado!

Masala Dosa was a band from Denmark, formed in the capital Copenhagen in 1975. The quartet came by former members of local groups like Hyldemor and Bifrost and released only a rare album in 1979, without much emphasis on the local scene. Vocals in Danish appear in the A side, but the highlight is the instrumental, often melodic and with great guitar work by Vagn Carlsen, accompanied by acoustic guitar, synthesizers and even sitar. As for the tracks, the best are "Pink Cosmos", "Drom eller hva" and the long "Cykelløbet". Great choice for progressive and psychedelic rock fans, recommended!
