ZAM ROCK - NGOZI FAMILY - Day of Judgement - 1976

Atendendo a mais um pedido, posto aqui o segundo disco do grupo Ngozi Family, um dos pioneiros e mais importantes grupos do movimento Zam Rock. A banda foi ativa na segunda metade dos anos 70, lançando quatro álbuns no total e se desfazando logo após o lançamento de 45000 Volts.  Aos poucos a história desse quarteto, e do gênero, vai sendo recontada através de relançamentos e sites.
O álbum Day of Judgement é prova disso, lançando em pequena quantidade em 1976, finalmente ganhou uma nova versão em CD e LP pela Now Again, em 2014. O relançamento é composto por 13 faixas curtas, sendo 4 bônus, trazendo um som típico do zam rock, em seus melhores momentos, tocado de forma crua, direta e barulhenta, misturando as influências ácidas/ psicodélicas de Hendrix na guitarra fuzz de Ngozi, com funk e ritmos africanos. As letras são na grande maioria em inglês e outras na língua local, falando sobre mulheres, críticas sociais e temas do dia-dia. Sem destaque principal, se trata de um trabalho sólido e com raros momentos fracos.
Pérola essencial para fãs de zam rock, e rock africano em geral.

There have been already a few reissues of Ngozi Family albums. This reissue is to say the least, of the same quality as the other ones, if not, at least in a very direct way, like an acid garage concept with an effective rawness, with simple direct energy songs that mostly are about directions, judgments and experiences of girls. The energy is expressive and emotionally direct. The drumming is a great variation of Afro-rock, while there are several fuzz solos, sometimes combined with bass that are worthy of note, making the group balance between a directing-to-the-public song-driven rock band and a power trio.

The rawest Ngozi album. Really gritty recording, fuzz guitar that is mixed way too loud at times (which is a great thing), crunchy lo-fi drums and no filler. Lo Fi psychedelic garage with a snotty punk-like attitude. The Ngozi Family does one thing on this album, but damn do they do it well. Ngozi’s most consistent effort, and to my ears one of the grails of the Zambian rock era.
