Comentário: Formado na Ilha de Wight, sul da Inglaterra, este foi um power trio 'perdido no tempo' e que lançou um raríssimo LP independente, antes de mudar seu nome para Sweet Tooth, já com outros membros. Nos anos 90 voltaram ao antigo nome e lançaram outro disco, porém as informações sobre eles são escassas e os álbuns são impossíveis de achar.

Nesta versão relançada em CD que disponibilizo aqui há 12 faixas curtas (3 bônus em relação a primeira prensagem), possuindo feeling setentista raramente encontrada em bandas de décadas posteriores, bebendo da fonte ácida / psicodélica, além de pinceladas de hard e prog. Pode ser facilmente confundido com alguma obscuridade surgida entre 68-72, caso o ouvinte não saiba a data do lançamento. O instrumental é composto por guitarra distorcida em parceria do violão, bateria, baixo pulsante e até raras passagens de órgão e flauta, variando entre momentos viajantes e enraivecidos, sempre em composições intrigantes e raras músicas 'fracas'.

Excelente e sólida raridade 'revival' dos anos 60/70, altamente recomendado!

Beggars Farm was formed on the Isle of Wight, south of England, as a power trio and released a very rare private LP before changing its name to Sweet Tooth with new members. In the 90's they came back to the old name and released another album, however the information about them is scarce and the albums are impossible to find.

In this version reissued in CD that I make available here there are 12 short tracks (3 bonuses in relation to the first press), with strong 70's feeling, rarely found in bands of later decades, clearly influenced by acid / psychedelic and touches of hard and prog. It can easily be mistaken with some obscurity between 68-72 if the listener does not know the release date. The instrumental is composed of heavy distorted guitar, acoustic guitar, drums, pulsating bass and even rare organ and flute passages, varying between trippy and raw moments, always in intriguing compositions and almost no weak songs. Highly recommended!

Comentário: Este foi um projeto de curta duração do compositor e cantor Nico Denhoorn, realizado na capital Amsterdã em 1970,  representando uma comunidade hippie local e que resultou em um raro LP independente lançado no mesmo ano. Nico lançou outros 2 álbuns solo e depois tornou-se escritor. 

Neste homônimo, estão presentes 14 curtas faixas de folk, variando entre atmosfera de baladas / pop até psicodelia lisérgica. O conteúdo lírico é o principal enfoque da obra, com letras de protesto e em defesa ao ambientalismo, sendo algumas músicas em inglês e outras em holandês. Os vocais são masculinos e femininos, acompanhados por arranjos instrumentais acústicos e simples, predominando violão, flauta e piano, além de raras intervenções da guitarra e órgão elétricos.

Uma boa opção para admiradores de acid folk dos anos 60, apesar de nada essencial.

This was a short-lived project by composer and singer Nico Denhoorn, born in Amsterdam, representing a local hippie community, that resulted in a rare private LP released in 1970. Nico released two other solo albums and then became a writer.

In the self-titled, there are 14 short folk tracks, varying from ballads /pop to lysergic psychedelic atmosphere. The lyrical content is the main focus of the album, with lyrics of protest and in defense of environmentalism, with some songs sung in English and others in Dutch. The vocals are masculine and feminine, accompanied by acoustic and simple instrumental arrangements, predominating guitar, flute and piano, as well as rare electric guitar and organ interventions.

A good choice for fans of acid folk from the 60's, although nothing essential.

Comentário: Depois de postar discos de vários países Ásia Central, trazer algo do Uzbequistão foi uma difícil missão. Porém apresento aqui um desconhecido conjunto de lá, cujas informações são praticamente inexistentes, sendo uma ВИА (ou VIA), que eram bandas permitidas pelo governo soviético, e tendo lançado 2 EPs pela gravadora estatal Melodiya em 1974.
Este segundo e último EP é dividido em 3 curtas músicas: "Kishlogimizga Keling", que começa com uma intro surpreendente, mesclando psicodelia e música local em ritmo quase hipnótico da percussão e cordas, até entrada do coral, dando uma toada mais folk pop, apesar de bom acompanhamento da guitarra e metais. "Darelar" tem outra entrada interessante, apesar de mais breve, novamente entrosando trio de instrumentos elétricos (destacando-se a guitarra) e outros tradicionais, além de bela voz feminina. A balada "Toshkent Khakida Kushik" é dona do lado B, romântica e com forte vocal masculino acompanhado por piano e sax, havendo uma rápida quebra de funk. Todas as letras são em língua local.
Não esperem nenhuma grande surpresa aqui, porém é uma mescla intrigante entre ritmos ocidentais e tradicionais da região, vale a audição!


After posting records from various Central Asian countries, bringing something from Uzbekistan was a difficult mission. However, here is an unknown group from there, whose information is practically nonexistent, being a ВИА (or VIA), which were bands allowed by the Soviet government, they released 2 EPs by the state record company Melodiya in 1974.
This second and final EP is divided into 3 short songs: "Kishlogimizga Keling", which begins with an amazing intro, blending psychedelia and local percussion/ strings instruments in hypnotic rhythm, until the folk pop choir part, despite good accompaniment of guitar and brass. "Darelar" has another interesting intro, although shorter, again with trio of electric instruments (emphasizing the guitar) and other traditional ones, in addition to beautiful female voice. The ballad "Toshkent Khakida Kushik" is owner of the side B, romantic and with strong masculine vocal accompanied by piano and sax, having a fast funk-break in the middle. All lyrics are in local language.

Do not expect any great surprises here, but it's an intriguing mix between western and traditional rhythms of the region, it's worth hearing!

Comentário: Pérola vinda da Cidade do Cabo, ativa no princípio dos anos 70 e cujas informações conhecidas são apenas as da contra-capa deste LP que posto aqui. Único lançado pela banda (além de dois singles), pelo pequeno selo 'Little Giant' e que infelizmente não obteve sucesso, esta é hoje uma obra quase mítica do rock sul-africano.
Composto por 12 curtas faixas, entre composições próprias e covers de clássicos do R&B norte-americanos, este disco mescla ainda rock clássico e funk/ soul. É clara a influência de bandas dos anos 60, fazendo que soe 'ultrapassado' e comercial demais em certos momentos, também pelas composições e arranjos simples (o instrumental possui bateria, baixo e guitarra, tendo alguns bons momentos da última, além de flauta em 'Here I Come'). A produção também não é das melhores.
Um exemplo daqueles registros que valem mais pela raridade do que qualidade, apesar de alguns momentos interessantes.


The Triangle was a band from Cape Town, active in the early 70's and the only known information  is in the back cover of this LP. They released only one album (in addition to two singles), by the small label 'Little Giant' and unfortunately didn't succeed, being now an almost mythical copy of South African rock.
Composed of 12 short tracks, between own compositions and covers of  American R&B classics, this album mixes classic rock and funk / soul. The influence of bands from the 60s is clear, making it sound dated and too commercial at certain times, also for the simple compositions and arrangements, with a lack of creativity. Record production is also not the best.
An example of those records that are worth more for rarity than quality, despite some interesting moments.

Comentário: Como presente de Natal a todos os seguidores e leitores do blog, trago uma banda perdida no tempo, formada em Helsinque, capital da Finlândia, em 1972 e ativa por apenas dois anos, não lançando nenhum álbum no período. Apenas em 2016 o selo local Svart nos brinda com a série de lançamentos 'Pop Liisa', que resgatam gravações ao vivo de diversos grupos para a rádio nacional.
Aqui ouvimos 5 faixas, revezando-se entre curtas e longas, de uma mistura efervescente no cenário escandinavo na época: o jazz e o rock progressivo, além de pitadas de acid rock. Majoritariamente instrumental, ouvimos longas jams onde saxofone e flauta de Pepa Päivinen rivalizam com a guitarra elétrica, acompanhadas por sólida seção rítmica. As letras são em língua local e inglês. Entre as influências 'domésticas' podemos citar a conhecida Tasavallan Presidentti e Haikara, além de Frank Zappa, que ganha uma homenagem no cover de 'Orange County Lumber Truck'.
Um prato cheio para fãs de jazz rock progressivo, altamente recomendado!

Taivaanvuohi were a band operating in early 1970s Finland, that never managed to release an album, though they were slated to be on the Love Records roster. They were a largely forgotten group, until these wonderful Pop Liisa radio sessions showed up and have been sprung upon us, courtesy of Svart. Taivaanvuohi's style is an absolute bulls-eye for what I personally enjoy - that of Hot Rats-era Frank Zappa meets the Canterbury sounds of 1969 Soft Machine. Very complex, with a jazzy disposition, but with an added heavy psychedelic rock slant. Vocals are in English, not always a given with bands from Finland (though I would have preferred the indigenous language myself). Since this was a "one time live event" (December 5th, 1973), the performance isn't perfect, and one can only imagine how great these compositions would have been with some quality studio time and production. From Finland one can hear traces of Charlies, Tasavallan Presidentti, and Haikara in Taivaanvuohi's music, but largely they possess their own sound. The album finishes on a high point, with a ferocious cover of Zappa's 'Orange County Lumber Truck'. I had forgotten about this title, and was curious why some Finns from the early 70s had some strange affection for Anaheim and Irvine. Anyway, don't overlook this one if your tastes run similar to mine. This is a fantastic and unexpected find.

Comentário: Depois de um longo intervalo, o blog está de volta e trazendo uma pérola vinda de Hamburgo, na Alemanha, e cujas informações são escassas, incluindo o nome dos membros. Lançaram um único e raríssimo álbum em 70 pela Vogue, até hoje não remasterizado.
Trata-se de uma obra dividida em 12 curtas faixas que mesclam composições próprias com temáticas cristãs e alguns covers de blues e R&B. Não esperem algo audacioso próximo ao Krautrock da época (apenas em "Celestial Peace"), mas sim uma mescla de psicodelia e proto-prog do fim dos anos 60, bastante influenciado por bandas britânicas. As músicas intercalam vocais femininos e masculinos e no instrumental a dobradinha órgão / guitarra marca boa presença em vários momentos.
Recomendado para fãs de rock alemão dos anos 60 e 70.

I have long strayed away from this album, even though it usually appears in krautrock databases and discographies. It's probably the heavily pronounced Jesus theme that seemed a bit off-putting - I'm a bit tired of xian albums masquerading as psych or prog. Guess I should've looked at the cover more closely! Depicting a morbid pile of human bones, it clearly suggests an underground classic, which this album falls just short of being. Actually, this is a rare example of a full-blown German psych record, maybe a bit like Talix (also released on Vogue), although Image of Jesus are generally heavier, darker and, dare I say, better. The arrangements are top-notch, utilising a plethora of organs and guitars, the female voice is more hellish than heavenly (she's sounding like some kind of a dark prophet at times), but it's the atmosphere that really rules here. I'm beginning to wonder if they were tongue-in-cheek with all this "celestial" concept - the music on this record is definitely for the sinners and wrongdoers rather than righteous folks.

Comentário: Músico originário de Livorno, na região central da Itália, que começou sua carreira na música nos anos 60, em dupla com o francês Michelle Loskady, fazendo covers e chegando a lançar alguns compactos. Este é seu único álbum solo, cujas informações são mínimas (inclusive os músicos desconhecidos), lançado em um pequeno selo suíço e hoje impossível de achar.

São 12 curtas faixas que mesclam folk e pitadas de rock progressivo, ou proto-prog, já que este ainda estava se desenvolvendo no país. O álbum é muito voltado a parte lírica, com a bela voz de Pracchia, e letras todas em italiano, havendo algumas partes de declamações a capella, porém o acompanhamento instrumental tem seus ótimos momentos, se destacando de outros discos deste gênero, com violão 12 cordas, percussão e principalmente flauta, além de alguns momentos de órgão Hammond e guitarra.

Certamente uma pérola para fãs de RPI e prog/ folk em geral, recomendado!

A musician from Livorno, in central Italy, he started his career in music in the 60s, in a duo with Frenchman Michelle Loskady, making covers and even releasing some singles. This is his only solo album, whose information is minimal (including unknown musicians), released on a small Swiss label and impossible to find today. 
They are 12 short tracks that mix folk and touches of progressive rock, or proto-prog. The album is very focused on the lyric part, with the beautiful voice of Pracchia, and all lyrics in Italian, with some parts of word-spoken declamations, but the instrumental accompaniment has its great moments, mostly acoustic, with 12 string guitar, percussion and mainly flute, in addition to electric guitar and organ moments. Recommended gem for fans of RPI and prog / folk in general!

Comentário: Eis aqui um dos discos mais raros da história da música brasileira! As únicas informações conhecidas dessa obra se encontram na contra-capa do álbum, gravado nos Estúdios Reunidos S.A., em São Paulo, e lançado pela Ebrau (Editora Brasileira Autores Unidos) em 1973, com uma tiragem provavelmente mínima. Dos artistas creditados apenas Renato Mendes (que já foi postado no blog) teve uma breve carreira solo, os outros provavelmente tiveram apenas estas músicas gravadas. Qualquer informação sobre este álbum é bem vinda.

São apresentadas 11 curtas canções de MPB, seguindo a tendência dos grandes nomes da época, com leves doses de bossa nova e jazz, além do eletrônico de Renato, fazendo versões de clássicos da nossa música. Os vocais são majoritariamente femininos e delicados (a não ser nas faixas creditadas a Marcão e Cau), tendo temática ora abstrata ora romântica e acompanhados por belos arranjos no piano, flauta e percussão. A qualidade de gravação não é das melhores, mas nada que estrague a beleza desta pérola. Altamente recomendado para apreciadores de MPB!

Here is one of the rarest albums in the history of Brazilian music! The only known information about this LP is found on the back cover, recorded in São Paulo, and released by Ebrau (Editora Brasileira Autores Unidos) in 1973, with a probably minimal number of copies. Of the artists credited only Renato Mendes had a brief solo career, the others probably only had these songs recorded. Any plus information of this album is welcome.
11 short songs are presented, following the great MPB names of the time, with light doses of bossa nova and jazz, besides the electronic versions of Renato. The vocals are mostly female and delicate (except in the tracks credited to Cau and Marcão), having abstract lyric and accompanied by beautiful arrangements in the piano, flute and percussion. The recording quality is not the best, but nothing that spoils the beauty of this gem. Highly recommended!

Comentário: Músico nascido no Mississipi em 1923, que começou sua carreira nos anos 40 nos estados do sul dos EUA após aprender a tocar gaita sozinho na infância. Perdeu um braço em 1958, se estabelecendo em Chicago após o acidente, quando passou a tocar na rua Maxwell e acompanhando outros músicos, quando conseguiu contrato para gravar seu próprio LP. Veio a falecer em 1977, lançando mais um derradeiro álbum dois anos antes.
O debut é uma típica obra de 'Electric Blues' / Blues Rock, que se popularizou na mesma década, graças a grandes nomes do gênero, como Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson e Little Walter, porém sem deixar de lado as raízes do Chicago Blues. Conta apenas com o apoio simples da bateria e guitarra, que acompanham o lamento da protagonista harmônica e do vozeirão rasgado de Wrencher. Sendo um disco bem executado e sólido, poucos momentos ficam abaixo do bom. Prato cheio para todos os blueseiros de plantão.

While most blues albums bear romantic-sounding titles like the one used here, this is the real deal. Wrencher's one-armed amplified harp playing is perfectly supported by the lone guitar of Little Buddy Scott and the bar-bones basic drumming of Playboy Vinson. Listing titles is superfluous, since the feel and the ambience is the important thing. But blues albums seldom capture that elusive quality the way it is here, and that's the secret of its charm. Superlative in every regard, this is a great album by a very under-recorded artist.

Comentário: Formado na capital Lusaka em 1972 originalmente como um trio, tendo toda sua formação refeita no ano seguinte, com a qual lançaram este único e raríssimo LP pelo selo estatal. O líder Mike Nyoni seguiu carreira solo e lançou alguns trabalhos mais tarde na mesma década.
Este álbum é dividido em 8 curtas faixas que mesclam psicodelia e principalmente o funk (por influências do soul-man Nyoni) com ritmos tradicionais da região. Guitarra wah-wah lidera o instrumental, acompanhada por baixo / bateria, simples e diretos. Algumas canções são baladas românticas (geralmente cantadas em inglês) e outras são mais carregadas de letras politizadas, cantadas em língua local e pegada marcante, que pessoalmente vejo mais próximas do estilo Zam Rock e por isso as melhores.
Ótima pérola para fãs de rock africano e especialmente zam rock.

Born Free was founded in 1972 by bandleader, drummer and vocalist Nicky Mwanza, but the band never recorded until a complete personnel change. Star-in-the-making Mike Nyoni joined as vocalist and lead guitarist; Zimbabwean-born Peter Lungu replaced Mwanza on drums; Joseph Musonda alternated between rhythm and bass guitar. Mwanza went on to form Cross Town Traffic, and Nyoni’s Born Free signed to ZMPL, recording the album Mukaziwa Chingoi (Promotion) LP in 1975. The album showcases Nyoni’s talents first and foremost, and betrays a study of funk: this is not a fuzz guitar showcase, but a wah-wah guitar dominated album – the instrumental “Mad Man” sounds like it could have been cut in Detroit, Michigan in the early ’70s. After Born Free, Nyoni went solo, signing to Christopher Ndhlovu’s Chris Editions for two albums: Kawalala and his most straight forward funk/soul release I Can’t Understand You.
