GARAGE/ PSYCH ROCK - VARIOUS - Simla Beat 70 / 71 - 2000 (1970/71)

Pérola obscura e com história muito curiosa vinda da Índia. No início dos anos 70 uma marca de cigarros do país, chamada Simla, lançou um concurso com pequenos grupos de rock da região e os vencedores teriam músicas lançadas no LP Simla Beat, que teve duas edições em 1970 e 71, reunindo 15 grupos de várias cidades. Apenas em 2000 a Shadocks relançou os dois discos em CD duplo e nova capa.
Posto aqui a nova compilação Simla Beat 70 / 71, reunindo os dois LPs originais, divididos em 21 curtas faixas e 15 bandas, todas seguindo a linha do rock de garagem, psicodélico e beat do final dos anos 60, com clara influência do rock americano e britânico da época, evidenciado em covers de CCR, Cream, Electric Flag, The Guess Who e Howlin’ Wolf. No instrumental nada de especial, apenas o clássico e cru trio bateria/baixo/guitarra, com raros momentos de teclado e nenhuma influência de música local, sendo todas as letras em inglês. Para as faixas, destaque em "Voice From the Inner Soul", "Psychedelia", "Sinister Purpose", "Mist" (CD1) e "You Can't Judge a Book", "Until the Dawn" e "Aimless Lady" (CD2).
Apesar de um pouco datado, pérola recomendada para fãs de obscuridades "garageiras" e psicodélicas.

In the early '70s, the India Tobacco Company sponsored an annual "All-India Simla Beat Contest." These events sparked compilations of Indian rock bands, Simla Beat 70 and Simla Beat 71, that have been combined into one package on this double-CD reissue. Very, very little Indian rock from this era has been heard in the West, and the sounds are both surprising and, in some ways, disappointing. Surprising in that it's uncanny how much this sounds like the garage bands that could have been playing in any country, although it actually sounds more like bands from Europe and South America that spoke English as a second language than it does like American or British groups. Surprising, also, in that it sounds much more like 1965-1968 rock than it does like early '70s rock, although that's understandable given that it can take years for Western trends make their impact on the other side of the globe.
