HEAVY PSYCH/ BLUES - BANDOLERO - Same - 1970

Um dos grupos mais importantes e populares vindos de Porto Rico nas décadas de 60 e 70, formado por jovens da capital San Juan, após fim de pequenas bandas locais. O Bandolero lançou um único álbum em 1970, antes de se fazerem precocemente, reeditado algumas vezes posteriormente.
O homônimo de 1970 é composto por 11 faixas competentes que seguem muito a psicodelia norte-americana da época, com algumas doses de blues, ritmos latinos e baladas. O instrumental é marcado pelo entrosamento órgão e guitarra fuzz ácida, se revezando em grandes solos, acompanhando ainda por bom trabalho de baixo, bateria e percussão. As letras são a maioria em inglês, apesar de alguns temas serem cantados em espanhol. Destaque para "I Got It", "My Life Is Always Going Through", "Together" e "Truth And Understanding".
Um LP que coloca Porto Rico no mapa do "planeta rock" dos anos 60 e 70, pérola recomendada para fãs de rock psicodélico latino e blueseiro.

Psychedelic-garage-blues-jam from Puerto Rican. The album was released in 1970 and its full of fuzzy treats, all wailing guitar and screaming organ hammond like Moby Grape. Much of this one's claim to fame rests with the fact it was included in Hans Pokora's 1001 Record Collector Dreams. Their sole album "Bandolero" was recorded in San Juan's Ochoa Recording Studios. Musically the performances were professional, but failed to offer up anything special. With Nogueras responsible for writing the majority of material, tracks such as 'Together', ''Truth and Understanding' and 'Awake' showcased a fairly standard mix of conventional hard rock ('Together'), blues ('My Life Is Always Going Through Changes') and Latin moves (imagine Santana with a bit of grunge thrown in for authenticity and you'll be in the right aural neighborhood). As lead singer Nogueras was okay and most of the performances were in English (though his English much leaves the to be desired) but a couple of songs featured Spanish lyrics. Perhaps not a big surprise, but Spanish numbers like 'Salsa Friquea' displayed considerably more energy than the band's Anglo catalog...album in my opinion one of the greatest exponents of psychedelia from Latin America.

Pérola vinda de Porto Rico, formada no meio dos anos 60 na cidade de Mayagüez. O The Night Walkers foram uma das principais bandas da região na época, conseguindo sucesso local e lançando quatro LPs entre 1968 e 71. Após algumas mudanças de formação no começo dos anos 70, o grupo se desfez.
Posto aqui o homônimo e segundo disco dos caras, lançado em 1968. As doze músicas presentes são todas curtas e seguindo a linha sonora de outros grupos latino-americanos da época, com a maioria das letras em espanhol e influência pesada de beat e pop rock britânico/ norte americano. A maior parte do tempo baladas suaves com bateria e baixo aparecendo bem, outras músicas são psicodélicas e "garageiras", com guitarra fuzz nervosa. Destaque para "Aquario", "La Lluvia Y El Viento" e "Come on Home".
Nada de muito original ou essencial, mas ainda uma pérola recomendada para fãs de rock dos anos 60.

Pearl coming from Puerto Rico, formed in the mid 60s in the city of Mayagüez. The Night Walkers were one of the leading bands in the region at the time, achieving local success and releasing four LPs between 1968 and 71. The group disbanded in the early 70s. 
Post here the eponymous and second album of them, launched in 1968. The twelve songs present are short and following other Latin American sounds at the time, with most Spanish lyrics and heavy influences of British / American beat and pop rock. Most of the time ballads with soft drums and bass showing up well, other songs are psychedelic and grage style, with fuzz guitar. Highlight for "Aquario", "La Lluvia Y El Viento" e "Come on Home". Nothing too original or essential, but still a recommended for fans of 60s rock pearl.

LATIN/ PSYCH ROCK - THE CHALLENGER'S - Same - 1969

Pérola vinda da Ilha de Porto Rico, território dos Estados Unidos. O grupo The Challenger's foi um dos primeiros da região, formados em meados dos anos 60 por seis jovens de San Juan. A banda lançou apenas um LP em 1969 e logo no começo da década de 70 se desfez.
O álbum homônimo traz 9 curtas faixas (com exceção a última), sendo 3 covers de Beatles, Dylan e The Searchers. O rock psicodélico dos anos 60 domina, junto com influências de ritmos latinos, principalmente Santana, e também rock "garageiro" em vários momentos. No instrumental, destaque para o órgão que comanda o disco do começo ao fim, algumas boas passagens de guitarra fuzz e letras em inglês. Quanto as faixas, as melhores são "Little Big Man", "Letting You Know" e "Emily".
