Comentário: Grupo originário da Nova Zelândia que lançou apenas um raro single e logo se desfez, sendo conhecido por ter como membros Kevin Clark e David Parsons, que viriam a ter carreiras consolidadas em outras bandas locais. Este compacto traz 2 curtas músicas que mesclam rock psicodélico, jazz e ritmos indianos (raga), ao estilo do fim dos anos 60, majoritariamente instrumental e com presença de sitar, sax, flauta, percussão, guitarra, proporcionando uma atmosfera viajante / ácida.
Com certeza um grupo que tinha capacidade para ter lançado um álbum completo, mas ainda assim pode ser apreciado.

A New Zealand-based group that released only one rare single and soon disbanded, being known to have as members Kevin Clark and David Parsons, who established careers in other local bands. This single has 2 short songs that mix psychedelic rock, jazz and Indo-raga music, in the style of the late 60's, mostly instrumental and with presence of sitar, sax, flute, percussion, guitar, providing a trippy / acid atmosphere.
Certainly a group that had the ability to have released a full album, but still can be enjoyed with these 2 songs.

Comentário: Primeiro disco deste grupo francês, creditado também como projeto do líder, compositor e músico André Fertier. O conjunto lançou 3 álbuns entre as décadas de 70 e 80, sendo este o primeiro, e Fertier seguindo carreira solo posteriormente.
As 4 faixas presentes trazem uma mescla de música tradicional indiana, além de jazz fusion e rock progressivo, em momentos próximo do sinfônico, território desbravado anos antes por nomes como Aktuala e Shakti. Sem nenhuma parte lírica e muito bem executada por uma grande diversidade de instrumentos, como tabla e santoor (típicos), solos de violino, saxofone, guitarra e sintetizadores, provocando atmosfera viajante, intensa e até mesmo dançante.
Uma excelente pérolas para fãs de indo-prog-fusion, sem quase nenhum momento fraco, altamente recomendado!

Andre Fertier's Clivage is one of the most impressive, unheralded, French ensembles. Finding themselves in no-man's land betwixt Indian music, jazz, drone and progressive rock styles, the ensemble created three fascinating albums well worth the attention of those who seek music that falls in the cracks between genres.

The group's debut album is probably their signature statement. Featuring four long tracks, Regina Astris sets the stage for this ensemble's mesmerizing music. Instrumentally, the rhythm section is based on Armand Lemal's perucssion and Patricio Villaruel's tablas, upon which Fertier (guitar and keys), Jean Pierre de Barba (sax), Claude Duhaut (bass), and Mahmoud Tabrizizadeh (violin) weave a spellbinding tapestry, a sound that is reminiscent of Shakti, Archimedes Badkar, Oriental Wind, Aktuala and other similar groups where jazz meets the east. The drone stylings of the raga-esque music give the overall feel a trancy atmosphere where a drone is set up, and over the course of each piece, a build up slowly emerges where the instrumentalists improvise over the rhythms, continuing to advance the intensity of each piece. It ends up being over all too quickly, a virtual delight transcending several genres that should appeal to fans of east-meets-west music.

Comentário: Nascido em Mumbai em 1934, o já músico Amancio D'Silva mudou-se na década de 60 para a Inglaterra, onde ganhou notoriedade na cena local e lançou alguns álbuns no período. Posto aqui seu último disco, gravado em Londres em 1974 e lançado apenas 32 anos depois, com presença de grandes nomes como Stan Tracey, Clem Alford e Don Rendell. Dividido em 5 longas e instrumentais faixas, ouvimos aqui uma excelente mistura de ritmos tradicionais indianos e jazz fusion, com talentosos músicos, passagens de no violão, sax, sitar, flauta e tablas e atmosfera viajante.

Guitarist / composer Amancio D`Silva was born in Goa, India and arrived in London in 1967, where he was immediately absorbed by the burgeoning local Jazz scene. Although D`Silva participated in a wide variety of sessions, his unique guitar voice always included a subtle Eastern undertone. However, on his solo recording projects, where his own compositions were mainly featured, this influence was much more apparent. He recorded five brilliant solo albums, of which this was the last. The musicians participating in this recording come from the ranks of legendary British Jazz scene: Don Rendell – saxophone, Stan Tracey – piano and Alan Branscombe – flute, vibes and electric piano. A sitar and two tabla players add the Indian flavor to the music, which flows beautifully like a river of sound in an enchanted garden. Absolute must!

Braz Gonsalves é um músico indiano, nascido em Goa em 1934. Ainda jovem aprendeu saxofone e flauta com o pai e se tornou uma figura local conhecida, tocando com vários artistas e bandas da região. Informações sobre sua discografia são difíceis, porém se tem conhecimento de alguns singles e EPs nos anos 70, atualmente seu trabalho é voltado para música religiosa.
Posto aqui um single de 1970, gravado em Calcutá pelo conjunto The Braz Gonsalves 7. Traz as músicas "Raga Rock", uma faixa matadora, hipnotizante e instrumental de quase 7 minutos que pode ser classificada entre spiritual jazz e música indiana, com exuberante trabalho no sax de Gonsalves, teclados (de Louis Banks) e bateria/ percussão; "No Amount of Money" traz um funk mais simples, porém cativante e novamente com bom trabalho dos metais e guitarra, aqui o destaque é a linda voz feminina de Pam Crain.
Um compacto que deixará o ouvinte "querendo mais", recomendado para fãs de jazz fusion em geral.

Braz Gonsalves is an Indian musician, born in Goa in 1934. He learned saxophone and flute with his father and became a known local artist, performing with various artists and bands in the region. Information about his discography are difficult, but it is aware of some singles and EPs in the 70s, now his work is focused on religious music.
Post here a rare single from 1970, recorded in Kolkata by The Braz Gonsalves 7. Bring the songs "Raga Rock", a killer, hypnotic and instrumental track of almost seven minutes that can be classified between spiritual jazz and Indian music with amazing Gonsalves' work in the sax, keyboards (by Louis Banks) and drums / percussion; "No Amount of Money" brings a catchy funk, but again with good metals and guitar, here the highlight is the beautiful female voice of Pam Crain. Recommended for jazz fusion fans in general.

INDIAN/ RAGA ROCK - DEBABRATA CHAUDHURI & FAIYAZ KHAN - Meditations in Indian Sitar Music - 1968

Post "alternativo" para este Carnaval, a dupla formada pelo conhecido músico, professor e escritor de origem bangladeshiana Debabrata Chaudhuri e o indiano Faiyaz Khan. O projeto originou um único e raro disco em 1968, gravado em lançado em Londres, no auge da popularidade da música indiana no ocidente.

O álbum Meditations in Indian Sitar Music é dividido em 2 longas canções totalmente instrumentais ("ragas") na faixa de 20 minutos cada, que não tem nada de rock, apenas música indiana clássica, como o próprio título diz, tocadas de forma hipnótica e viajante, apenas com sitar e tabla. Pouco mais posso falar sobre essa pérola, altamente recomendo para fãs de música indiana e raga rock.

The duo formed by the well known musician, teacher and writer of Bangladeshi origin Debabrata Chaudhuri and Indian Faiyaz Khan. The project releaed an only and rare disc in 1968, recorded in London at the height of popularity of Indian music in the West.
The album "Meditations in Indian Sitar Music" is divided into 2 long instrumental songs ("ragas") with more than 20 minutes each, bringing classical Indian music only, as the title says, played hypnotic and trippy way, with sitar and tabla only. Little more I can say about this gem, highly recommend to Indian music and raga rock fans.

FUNK/ RAGA ROCK - ABBAS MEHRPOUYA - Soul Raga / Ghabile-Ye Leili - 2010 (197?)

Pérola vinda do Irã, o músico Abbas Mehrpouya (مهرپویا em persa) nasceu na capital Teerã em 1928 e conseguiu sucesso no país antes da Revolução Islâmica de 1979, quando lançou vários compactos. Após sua morte em 93, várias coletâneas e novas músicas dele estão sendo lançadas, sendo o caso desse compacto que posto aqui. 

O single lançado em 2010 pela Finders Keepers traz as músicas "Soul Raga" e "Ghabile-Ye Leili", ambas sem ano certo de gravação, provavelmente começo dos anos 70, e também os músicos que acompanham Mehrpouya são desconhecidos. A faixa lado A merece destaque, com riff  "surrupiado" de "Hope You're Feeling Better", do Santana, mas trazendo interessante mistura de funk, psicodelia, rock latino e música árabe/ indiana (raga rock), com presença de órgão elétrico, sitar e flauta. A segunda canção também está na linha funk/ psych rock, com guitarra wah-wah e vocal em persa. 

Um verdadeiro caldeirão de estilos, recomendado para fãs de raga/funk/psych rock, uma introdução ao som de Mehrpouya!

Pearl from Iran, the musician Abbas Mehrpouya  (مهرپویا in Persian) was born in the capital Tehran in 1928 and achieved success in the country before 1979, when released several singles. After his death in 93, several compilations and new songs are being released. 

The single I post here was released in 2010 by Finders Keepers and brings the songs "Soul Raga" and "Ghabile-Ye Leili", both without right recording year, probably early 70s, and also the musicians accompanying Mehrpouya are unknown. The track side A is noteworthy with Santana's Hope You're Feeling Better riff, but bringing interesting mix of funk, psychedelia, Latin rock and Arabic / Indian music (raga rock), with the presence of organ electric sitar and flute. The second song is also funk / psych rock with wah-wah guitar and vocals in Persian. Recommended for fans of raga / funk / psych rock, an introduction to the sound of Mehrpouya!
