Comentário: Pérola formada na região de Sicasso, no Mali, sob o nome 'Orchestre Régional De Sikasso', lançando um álbum com este nome em 1970 e outro em 1977 (já como Le Kéné-Star), com a criação do selo 'Mali Kunkan', primeiro do país. Houve relançamento em 2014 em CD e LP na Holanda, novamente com edição limitadas.

Esta é mais uma daquelas 'jóias' vindas do oeste africano, um berço de sons e misturas efervescentes na época. Temos aqui um caldeirão que mescla estilos tradicionais, principalmente a Mande Music, com ocidentais, entre eles funk, jazz e rock, refletido no instrumental rico e diverso, destacando-se guitarra, órgão elétrico, intensa seção de metais e percussão endiabrada. As letras são todas em língua local, intercaladas por longos jams e geralmente cantada em coral (além de um engraçado possível 'diálogo' entre um cantor e outro que imita uma voz feminina ao longo dos hipnóticos 21 minutos de 'Lala').

Excelente e sólido registro e recomendado para qualquer interessado por música africana.

It was first led by drummer Baba Barry, before guitar player Madou ‘Guitare’ Sangaré took over when the orchestra changed its name to Kéné Star de Sikasso, and left behind the old 'Orchestre Régional' moniker as the decade rolled on. Under the Kéné Star de Sikasso’s name, the band released one LP in 1977 on the fabled Mali Kunkan collection. 

Opening this record, Hodi Yu Yenyan is the Kéné Star flagship song, with the electric organ and the guitars twirling together. Sung in senufo by François Ballo, it served to introduce the band’s musical aesthetics while extoling the virtues of the senufo culture, a language seldom recorded in Malian popular music of that time. The natural strength and wellness of this region is displayed on the second number, Kenedougou Fanga, sung by the band’s three singers. One of Mali’s most beautiful songs from the decade, Fitiriwale saw them again teaming up for an exercise in mellowness. Madou’s guitar swirls effortlessly around the melody, backed up by some droning electric organ. This song talks about weddings, with the lyrics "nowadays marriage doesn’t mean anything", advising that one has to look for a strong wedding and not for trivial pursuits. Hypnotic and intense, another moral fable takes up the whole of side B.

Comentário: Projeto formada paralelamente por membros da Ikenga Super Stars Of Africa, se mudando para a Inglaterra pouco tempo depois do início das atividades, lançando lá dois raros álbuns pela Orbitone e que recentemente ganharam nova versão em CD e LP.

"Destruction" é composto por 9 ótimas faixas que mesclam muito bem afrobeat, highlife, psicodelia e funk, como de costume na época, porém sem decepcionar ou faltar de originalidade. O som varia em momentos de groove dançante e outros crus e raivosos, contendo uma qualidade instrumental que honra o estilo, tendo excelentes passagens de guitarra, sessão de metais, percussão endiabrada e baixo. As letras são todas em língua local e contam com diversos momentos de coro.

Mais um 'diamante bruto' vindo do continente africano. Altamente recomendado para todos os fãs de afrobeat/afro-rock.

Early work from a group who later grew into the famous Ikenga Super Stars Of Africa – recording in London with a great raw sound – and an unusual mix of modes that's part Afro Funk, part something else entirely! The set's got that unique post-colonial vibe of some of the other great London recordings of the early 70s – such as work by Cymande or Demon Fuzz, both of whom have some dubby similarities to the Nkengas work on this set. There's a nice use of echo that really abstracts the basslines and percussion – although the grooves themselves are still more straightforward than any from Kingston at the time – and definitely echo the Nigerian roots of the group. Tracks have a lot of cool little funky corners and sharp edges that really set them apart – and titles include "London Special", "Ndu Bu Isi", "Anyi Bundi Igbo", "Jungle Beat", "Anyi Buofu", and "Ube Frank Special".

Comentário: Formado em Dakar em 1972 por ex-membros do grupos locais, este conjunto levou o nome do clube onde costumava tocar, o Sahel. Apesar da importância local, lançou apenas um álbum em 75 e após décadas fizeram alguns shows de reunião pelo país.

Este é considerado o primeiro disco de Mbalax já feito, estilo que ganharia popularidade nos anos seguintes com a mistura de ritmos tradicionais do oeste africano (sabar), música latina e caribenha, especialmente salsa, além da norte-americana, como jazz, rock, funk e soul. São 6 longas faixas dominadas por passagens ricas e cadenciadas no instrumental, que refletem essa mesclagem de estilos, havendo uso de guitarra, flauta, órgão, forte sessão de metais e de percussão típica. Os vocais também estão presentes e não ficam devendo, principalmente pelos coros que em momentos viram lamentos; sendo as letras todas em letra local, com exceção do cover de 'Caridad', em espanhol.

Altamente recomendado para todo fã de música africana contemporânea.

Formed in Dakar in 1972 by former members of small local groups, this group took the name of the club where they used to play, the Sahel. Despite the local importance, they released only one album in '75 and after decades did some reunion shows across the country.

This is considered the first Mbalax album ever made, a style that would gain popularity in the following years with the mix of traditional rhythms of West African (Sabar), Latin and Caribbean music, especially salsa, as well as North American jazz, rock, funk and soul. There are 6 long tracks dominated by rich and rhythmic passages in the instrumental, which reflect this mix of styles, using guitar, flute, organ, strong typical percussion and brass session. The vocals are also present and are also great, especially by the choruses that in moments are close to laments; being the lyrics all in local language, with the exception of the cover of 'Caridad', in Spanish. Highly recommended for every fan of contemporary African music.

Comentário: Grupo formado em Mogadíscio, capital da Somália, em meados dos anos 70. Apesar de sucesso local nas décadas de 70 e 80, até se desmembrar no período da guerra civil, nunca lançaram material oficial, apenas antigas gravações deste período em rádios locais foram recuperadas recentemente e liberadas na internet de forma não-oficial.
Trate-se de um trabalho realmente surpreendente para um país com quase nenhuma tradição em música moderna, composto de nove canções, incluindo algumas longas jams, mesclando funk, ritmos tradicionais do leste africano, groove e um leve toque de psicodelia, seguindo a melhor definição de 'Voodoo Funk'. Envolventes e 'sujas' passagens de teclados, guitarras, metais, percussão endiabrada e letras em língua local marcam o som, apesar da qualidade de produção não ser das melhores (como já é esperado). Para todos os amantes de afro-funk, um registro mais que recomendado!

Group formed in Mogadishu, capital of Somalia in the mid-70s. Despite local success in the 70s and 80s, until disbanding in the period of civil war, never released official material, only old recordings of this period in local radios were recovered recently and had unofficially versions available on the Internet.
This is a really amazing work for a country with almost no tradition in modern music, composed of nine songs, including some long jams, mixing funk, traditional east African rhythms, groove and a touch of psychedelia, following the best definition of 'Voodoo Funk'. Great passages of keyboards, guitars, brass, percussion and lyrics in local language mark the sound, although the quality of production is not the best (as expected).

Comentário: Pérola ativa em meados dos anos 70, oriunda do oeste do Quênia, região do povo Luo. O jovem quinteto lançou 3 raríssimos singles, que apesar da pouca prensagem ganharam certa influência na região. "Grassland" é uma jam majoritariamente instrumental que mescla afro funk e rock, com domínio do teclado viajante, acompanhado de percussão. "Kothbiro"é uma versão moderna de uma canção tradicional, mais cadenciada e ao estilo balada, porém com bons coros e parceria entre guitarra e teclado. As letras são toda em dholuo, dialeto local.

Black Savage was a short-lived mid-1970s group of young college-age Kenyans, namely Barrack Achieng (bass), Job Seda (a.k.a. Ayub Ogada) (percussion), Noel Drury Sanyanafwa (drums), Jack Odongo (keyboards) and Gordon Ominde (Golden Simone) (guitar). Most of them were from the Luo tribe, which may explain why the song is in the DhoLuo language. Its title means, ‘(The) Rain Is Coming’. ‘Koth Biro’ is actually a traditional DhoLuo song, possibly a lullaby. Job Seda has more recently released a more traditional version of the song, to the accompaniment of the traditional Luo lyre. The 'Grassland' single resonated within the young, urban, hipster Nairobi crowd when it dropped in 1976.

Comentário: Primeiro (e aparentemente único) disco solo deste músico de Benin, após sua saída de um dos mais prestigiados grupos da região: T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Gravado na Nigéria e com prensagem mínima na época, a obra ganha nova edição neste ano, pela Analog Africa. 

Dividido em 4 longas faixas, o LP traz uma mescla de ritmos tradicionais (Fon Music) com funk e psicodelia, ao melhor estilo do afrobeat no Oeste Africano. O instrumental é variado, onde ouvimos guitarra wah-wah, metais e rica percussão, por vezes repetitiva e hipnótica. Cantado em 4 línguas (inglês, francês, fon e mina), a parte lírica geralmente é feita por coros e com certos momentos de melancolia.

Raridade recomendada para todos os fãs de afrobeat dos anos 70.

In early 1978, Vincent Ahehehinnou left the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou without explanation. He had been one of their principal vocalist since 1968 and had helped transform them from a hard-charging nightclub band into a musical powerhouse and Africa-wide sensation.

Vincent's afrobeat credentials are in full evidence on opening track ‘Best Woman' (English) whose driving beat, focussed horns and intricate vocal melody recall the raucous intensity of Poly-Rythmo. But the deep funk of the title track turns out to be only a warm-up for album-highlight ‘Maimouna Cherie' (French), a moving expression of love and longing which kicks off with a hi-hat and wah-wah guitar workout but shifts gears mid-way into a more concentrated and contemplative groove.

The funk and afrobeat gems on Best Woman are balanced by songs that draw upon Sato, one of the many Vodoun rhythms of Vincent's native Benin. Side one concludes with "Vi Deka" (Mina), an epic slow-burner propelled by some of the record's most soulful vocals, while album closer "Wa Do Verite Ton Noumi" (Fon) all but dares you not to lose yourself in its sublime hypnotic trance.

Comentário: Parceria feita entre duas grandes figuras do jazz sul-africano, além de colaborações de peso, e que resultou em um único trabalho, infelizmente pouco lembrado. O LP é dividido em 4 faixas totalmente instrumentais, totalizando cerca de meia hora, porém apresentando um som de alta qualidade. Beira o soul/ afro jazz, avant-garde e também Cape Jazz (devido a sua localização), com muitas improvisações e duas longas jams, onde destacam-se passagens flutuantes de saxofone e piano, além de trabalho rítmico consistente.
Belíssimo exemplo de quão rico a música e o jazz africano pode ser, recomendado!


A project between two great figures of South African jazz, in addition to others collaborations, which resulted in a single work, unfortunately little remembered. The LP is divided into 4 fully instrumental tracks, totaling about half an hour, yet featuring a high quality sound. Passing through soul / afro jazz, avant-garde and also Cape Jazz (due to its location), with many improvisations and two long jams, highlight to floating passages of saxophone and piano, in addition to consistent rhythmic work.
Beautiful example of how rich African music and jazz can be, recommended!

Comentário: Primeiro lançamento oficial desta banda do Zimbábue (na época Rodésia), feito 40 anos após as gravações originais nos anos 70, sendo uma das únicas sobreviventes da cena contracultural da época. Musicalmente é bastante influenciado por bandas de Zam Rock e ocidentais de rock psicodélico, mesclando com ritmos africanos. O instrumental é simples e as faixas curtas, destaque para as boas passagens de guitarra e percussão, além de letras de protesto, contra a segregação e guerra civil, sendo todas em inglês (com exceção de"Bwanawe").
Um excelente registro para amantes de rock africano, recomendado!

Wells Fargo were part of a counterculture that has been almost totally forgotten, even in its country of origin. In the 1970s, during the last decade of Zimbabwe’s War of Independence, rock music exploded with a message of unity and hope. Wells Fargo was at the forefront of the “Heavy Music” movement serving as fuel for the fight.

A culmination of afrobeat, heavy jams and psychedelic sounds, Zimbabwean rock uncovers the underground sound that has come to make up the distinctively African genre. As a part of the counterculture movement that took root in the country during the late 1970s, Wells Fargo rose to fame as Zimbabwe entered the last decade of its war for independence. In the face of a systemically racist and oppressive Rhodesian government, rock became an outlet for expression.

Comentário: Pérola vinda da Nigéria, o grupo surgiu com o nome Asiko Rock Group e posteriormente mudou para Asiko, lançando um disco em cada fase. Posto aqui o último, lançado na Alemanha e composto por 9 curtas faixas de afro funk competente e típico da época. Destaca-se uma mescla equilibrada entre vocais e coros (em inglês e língua local) e instrumental marcado pelo forte trabalho na percussão, guitarra wah-wah e metais. Ótimo exemplo de afro funk setentista, recomendado para fãs do estilo.

CD reissue from the much in demand album 'Take a trip with Asiko', by this obscure nigerian group Asiko, originally out on Gorilla Records. Most of the tracks are quite percussive, with funky wah wah’s and a strong horn section, and in general, the sound is very much influenced by american funk (check for example ‘Love and peace’, instrumentally, almost an African version to James Brown’s ‘Hot Pants’). Huge tip!

Comentário: Formado nos anos 60 em Mamelodi, esta é uma das mais antigas bandas vindas da África do Sul, lançando vários álbuns durante as seguintes décadas. Mesmo assim, pouco se sabe sobre este registro, que aparentemente não conta com o líder Philip Tabane e teve apenas 100 cópias! 
Trazendo 8 faixas instrumentais, é dominado por improvisações e sonoridade única (classificado por alguns como free-jazz, além de ritmos tradicionais), com passagens hipnóticas de bateria, percussão e flauta dominando. Ouçam e tirem suas conclusões, especialmente fãs de música africana!

Formed in the 60s in Mamelodi, this is one of the oldest bands coming from South Africa, releasing several albums over the following decades. Still, little is known about this record, recorded without the leader Philip Tabane and only 100 copies!
Bringing 8 instrumental tracks, it is dominated by improvisations and unique sound (classified by some as free jazz, and traditional rhythms), with hypnotic passages of drums, percussion and flute dominating. Listen and draw your conclusions, especially African music fans!

Comentário: A primeira e mais importantes banda de rock vinda de Níger, formado em 1970 na cidade de Tahoua, o grupo Azna de L'Ader vê seu primeiro álbum oficial ser lançado após 40 anos de atividade. Altamente influenciado pelo rock e psicodelia ocidental, conta com menos traços da música local que outras bandas da região e é marcado por um trabalho feroz na guitarra fuzz e bateria / percussão hipnotizante em todas as faixas, com longas passagens instrumentais e vocais em língua local. 
Com certeza uma audição obrigatória para fãs de afro-rock.  

A real freakout of a record – played by a band who must have been one of the headiest acts in Niger during the 70s! That nation's not nearly as well-known for psychedelic acts as some of the other African scenes of the time – but Azna De L'Adner can easily stand with the best of them – and maybe have even more intense electric guitar workouts than the rest – with lots of long, hypnotic solos that are completely sublime! In fact, the vocals sometimes seem like a second feature to the record – peppered in with staccato force alongside the instrumental riffs, which get plenty of support from a beautifully brooding bassist!

Neste segundo volume, ouvimos outras 7 faixas retiradas do mesmo ao vivo e seguindo a mesma linha do primeiro registro: longas, viajantes e muito ricas no instrumental, onde predominam as improvisações e encontro entre ritmos tradicionais e da música ocidental. O vocal em língua local é outro ponto que chama a atenção, poderoso e emotivo.

Excelente pedida para fãs de rock africano, psicodélico, jazz e afrobeat em geral.

Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès in their second volume album. This multi-talented band demonstrates on this album its ability to cross over different kinds of music, from Mbalax to Afro-Cuban and Afro-Jazz ballads without loosing any tip from its original Psychedelic Sound with the fuzz guitars, strong horn sections and percussion, which gave to the band this unique identity.

Five out of seven overall tracks feature Bassirou Sarr, a truly exceptional singer. Whether in a ballad or some explosive Mbalax, Bassirou's voice is always full of emotion. One of the two remaining tunes, a great latin cover sung by Assane Camara, shows how good performers Dieuf-Dieul actually were and finally one powerful Mbalax track sung by the great Griot Gora Mbaye, displaying his strong links to the tradition of Senegal.

Comentário: Um grande relançamento do selo inglês Strut, trazendo à vida as gravações completas da banda tanzaniana Sunbrust após 4 décadas, incluindo singles, álbum de 76 e outras gravações inéditas. Contando com membros de outras nacionalidades, como Zaire, Quênia e Zâmbia, o disco traz 29 faixas absorvendo tudo de bom que estava sendo produzido no leste africano, como Zam Rock, e trazendo aquela mescla típica de ritmos tradicionais com rock psicodélico, funk e jazz. Guitarras barulhentas fuzz e wah-wah, órgão elétrico, metais e percussão endiabrada, no melhor estilo africano, são marcas do instrumental, que acompanha o vocal em inglês e em língua local.

Strut is extremely proud to present a definitive collection of recordings from one of Tanzania’s most revered but short-lived bands of the 1970s, Sunburst. Covering their entire output from 1973 to 1976, this first retrospective features music from their 45 RPM singles, as well as their sole album, Ave Africa, and an unreleased radio session recorded in Tanzania in 1973.
Having developing their sound via covers-heavy live performances and a string of early singles, Sunburst’s sole LP came out at a time when Zambia was enjoying a stream of releases by bands that would now be considered icons of Zamrock such as Witch, Ngozi Family, Musi-O-Tunya and The Blackfoot. The sleeve text described the Sunburst sound as “a fusion of the traditional sounds of Africa with Western Rock, spiced with a piece of the Caribbean” but the intricacies of the Kitoto Sound that Sunburst had crafted for years peaked on this recording.

Comentário: Mais uma maravilha que volta à luz após mais de 40 anos graças ao trabalho da Soundway Records. Trata-se do primeiro disco do músico ganês Joe Mensah, gravado e lançado na Nigéria em 1975 e relançado em 2016, sendo um dos mais raros da região. Composto por 3 longas faixas, o LP traz o que há de melhor na música do oeste africano: mescla de afrobeat, jazz e highlife, com excelentes arranjos no órgão, metais, coros em língua local e percussão. Sem momentos ruins, esta obra é altamente recomendada para fãs de afrobeat.

This album, one of West Africa’s very rarest, was recorded for the Decca label in Lagos and only ever released in tiny numbers in Nigeria in 1975. It was his debut solo recording and was made with members of the famous Sweet Talks band from his home town of Tema on the coast of Ghana just 25 km from the capital Accra. Two of the tracks have appeared on previous Soundway compilations but this is the first time the album has been available in it’s original format since the mid 1970s. A rich mixture of poly-rhythmic afro-soul, jazz, highlife and afrobeat it has an undeniable Ghanaian flavour with Joe’s arrangements, key- board-playing and vocal style adding an extra sophistication to proceedings.

Comentário: Uma das bandas mais populares do pequeno país do oeste africano, teve esta compilação lançada em 2014, contando com gravações em 1975 e 76, durante tour pela Califórnia. Totalizando cerca de 30 minutos, o som é típico da região na época, mesclando ritmos locais com rock, funk e soul, através de belos e animados arranjos no sax, percussão e guitarra, além dos vocais cantados em língua local e inglês. Ótima pedida para fãs de afrobeat e funk rock africano.

The music on Sierra Leone in 1970s USA is an about as excellent an example of hard-driving, straight-ahead Afro-funk as you could wish to hear. Every track bubbles with energetic percussion, conversing bass and guitars, richly harmonized vocals, soaring sax, fuzzy guitar solos, and a momentum that just won’t quit. Like so much African popular music from the period, the sound is strongly influenced by African-American funk, especially the syncopated grooves of James Brown, but also clearly draws on local musical and cultural traditions for the vocal melodies and rhythms.
