Earl Rodney é um músico nascido em Point Fortin, região de Trinidad e Tobago, em 1939. Desde cedo se interessou pelo tambor de aço (steelpan), instrumento típico da região, sendo membro de várias bandas e Orquestra nacional nos anos 60. Na década seguinte gravou um LP em Nova Iorque, aparentemente seu único solo, lançado em 1974 no Caribe e 35 anos depois em CD. Rodney ainda mantém projetos relacionados à música na sua terra local.
Friends & Countrymen traz 6 faixas, maioria longas e contando com longo time de músicos locais. Aqui ouvimos um caldeirão de influências, passando por ritmos latinos e caribenhos, jazz funk e rock, refletido no instrumental, que domina quase todo o tempo, liderado por excelentes passagens do tambor de aço e ainda percussão, sopros, teclado, guitarra wah-wah.
Som prazeroso e muito bem executado do começo ao fim, pérola recomendada para fãs de jazz funk e latino.

Recorded in New York in 1973, released that same year on Attilana, and reissued 35 years later by EM Records, Friends & Countrymen has stood the test of time. Earl Rodney and his countrymen were Trinidadian musicians on self-imposed exile, Rodney being one of Trinidad's best steel pan players. Friends & Countrymen is all about groove, heat, strong musicianship, fun... and the steel pan, of course! The instrument is prominently featured in the instrumental track "Midnight Man (O'Mo'O'Ru)," and always provides lead melodies and background accompaniment elsewhere. The grooves are deep Caribbean funks. Over the bass, drums, and percussion are stacked wah-wah guitar, horns a-plenty, and the alto pan. "Juck Juck" has a jam-goes-Afro-funk vibe. It's no surprise that it opens the album: its infectious beat and call-to-dance vocals immediately set the record player on fire. "Peace Pipe" is a humorous ode to marijuana, while "Strife in the Village," the album's most ambitious track, blends Chicago-type horn lines with Rodney's Island music. The second half begins with two mellower, more jam-oriented tracks (including the aforementioned "Midnight Man"). Then, the eight-minute "Friends & Countrymen" comes back to strong, uplifting songwriting, punchy horn lines, and a savory fusion of Caribbean and African styles. The steel pan is a difficult instrument to record and mix -- in the backgroud, it tends to get muddy; in the foreground, it takes a lot of room -- but engineer Haydin Harris did a fine job on this album. And Earl Rodney is definitely a stellar player, although his whole posse was quite talented.

PSYCH/ LATIN/ FUNK ROCK - BATTI MAMZELLE - I See The Light - 1974

Batti Mamzelle foi uma banda formada na Inglaterra no começo dos anos 70, mas com todos os membros originários de Trinidad e Tobago, pequeno país do Caribe. O projeto de Richard Bailey durou pouco, cerca de um ano, mas resultou em um raro disco, lançado na Inglaterra em 1974 e hoje procurado por colecionadores. Após o fim do grupo, vários membros tentaram carreira solo.
O álbum I See the Light é composto por 9 faixas que trazem uma proposta interessante de misturar o jazz, rock e funk com música caribenha e ritmos típicos da região, como Calipso. A parte instrumental reflete muito bem essa mistura, contando com cinco percussionistas, com uso de tambores ("pan"), congas, timbales e outros, resultando em um trabalho de percussão matador, momentos de guitarra fuzz e teclados ainda aparecem. As letras são em inglês. Destaque para "San Juan", "Voodoo Man" e " I See the Light-Streaking".
Excelente pérola para fãs de funk e rock latino.

All members are from Trinidad but moved to the UK. The band mixes steeldrums with funky rock and a latin twist, heavy funk/psychedelic soul collectors will love this track.
They only released one album and the band split a year later.Richard Bailey joined Jeff Beck and recorded two albums with him, played on the "Tommy" soundtrack and became a very in demand session payer the last 8 years he is with UK jazz/funkers Incognito.
