Comentário: Aqui temos uma história interessante de uma parceria cultural entre Brasil e Nigéria. Em 1978 o diretor de cinema Ola Balogun, considerado um dos pais do audiovisual no país africano, filmou um longa metragem ambientado em nosso país, com atores e produção brasileira, chamado A Deusa Negra, um clássico um tanto quanto esquecido do nosso cinema negro e que encontra-se nos arquivos da Cinemateca Nacional. 

Como trilha sonora do filme, Ola contou com a composição de seu conterrâneo Remi Kabaka, músico e multi-instrumentista que já havia trabalhado com grandes nomes internacionais como Ginger Banks e que possui algumas obras solo. Remi montou uma banda de estúdio, Afrocult Foundation, que até onde se sabe não chegou a se apresentar ao vivo e se uniu apenas para gravar este disco na capital Lagos, contando com Joni Haastrup, outro nome conhecido do cenário local por seu LP solo do mesmo ano.

O álbum teve lançamento na Nigéria pela Afrodisia com nome Black Goddess e no Brasil pela London com tradução A Deusa Negra: Trilha Sonora Original do Filme (e bela capa desenhada por Abdias do Nascimento, segunda foto acima), sem ter sucesso comercial e caindo no esquecimento. Apenas em 2011 ganhou um nova versão pela Soundway Records, relançado em vinil e CD.

O álbum é dividido em 6 faixas, totalizando pouco mais de 30 minutos de duração, sendo todo instrumental e um bom exemplar do encontro entre o jazz e música africana, mesclagem típica daquela década, flertando entre algo mais experimental ou avant-garde e próximo do Afrobeat em seus melhores momentos. Os instrumentos predominantes aqui são teclados (sintetizadores), bateria e saxofone, contando ainda com passagens mais ocasionais de percussão e guitarra. O destaque vai para as faixas mais longas "The Quest" e "Black Goddess", dignas de nota dentro do movimento musical africano da época.

Original soundtrack to Ola Balogun’s legendary movie ‘Black Goddess’ from 1978. The film was written and directed by Balogun (recognized as one of Nigeria’s most renowned directors) but shot and cast in Brazil.

The soundtrack, deepest venture into experimental afro-jazz, was composed and produced by one of Nigeria’s most successful and original musicians Remi Kabaka (who has played with Steve Winwood, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney and Ginger Baker amongst others).

The record was originally issued in both Nigeria and Brazil, but recorded in Lagos, using four of the Nigerian music scene’s most innovative players. The resulting soundtrack created by these prestigious musicians is a truly unique and experimental afro-jazz recording that has been out of print for many years, until now.

Comentário: Projeto formada paralelamente por membros da Ikenga Super Stars Of Africa, se mudando para a Inglaterra pouco tempo depois do início das atividades, lançando lá dois raros álbuns pela Orbitone e que recentemente ganharam nova versão em CD e LP.

"Destruction" é composto por 9 ótimas faixas que mesclam muito bem afrobeat, highlife, psicodelia e funk, como de costume na época, porém sem decepcionar ou faltar de originalidade. O som varia em momentos de groove dançante e outros crus e raivosos, contendo uma qualidade instrumental que honra o estilo, tendo excelentes passagens de guitarra, sessão de metais, percussão endiabrada e baixo. As letras são todas em língua local e contam com diversos momentos de coro.

Mais um 'diamante bruto' vindo do continente africano. Altamente recomendado para todos os fãs de afrobeat/afro-rock.

Early work from a group who later grew into the famous Ikenga Super Stars Of Africa – recording in London with a great raw sound – and an unusual mix of modes that's part Afro Funk, part something else entirely! The set's got that unique post-colonial vibe of some of the other great London recordings of the early 70s – such as work by Cymande or Demon Fuzz, both of whom have some dubby similarities to the Nkengas work on this set. There's a nice use of echo that really abstracts the basslines and percussion – although the grooves themselves are still more straightforward than any from Kingston at the time – and definitely echo the Nigerian roots of the group. Tracks have a lot of cool little funky corners and sharp edges that really set them apart – and titles include "London Special", "Ndu Bu Isi", "Anyi Bundi Igbo", "Jungle Beat", "Anyi Buofu", and "Ube Frank Special".

Comentário: Trio formado em Lagos por músicos de origens camaronesas, mas que já tocavam em bandas locais como Wrinkar Experience e The Faces. Lançaram 4 LPs até 1980, sendo este o segundo, relançado ano passado pela austríaca PMG.

O som é típico do oeste africano na época, mesclando um poderoso e envolvente groove na percussão e psicodelia da guitarra fuzz barulhentas, somada a passagens viajantes de teclados. As letras são todas em inglês e trazem temas sociais / políticos em algumas canções, como "Peaceful Solution", "Spaceville Rape" e "Nobody's Man", que são também o destaque da obra.

The Rock Town Express here comes across with lots of fuzz in the guitars – that later psych influence that was tripping across the African scene in the late 70s, often mixed with a bit of funk – as in some of the hipper Zamrock grooves of the period! The approach here is maybe a bit lighter than some of those, but still equally trippy at the best moments – especially when the keyboards get kind of weird and spacey – even as the whole thing's held together by strong lead vocals, and some captivating English language lyrics! Titles include the upbeat groover "Nobody's Man", which has a mad trumpet part at the start – plus "Spaceville Rape", "Peaceful Solution", "I Want To See You Tonight", and "Shake It On Baby".

Comentário: Pérola vinda da Nigéria, o grupo surgiu com o nome Asiko Rock Group e posteriormente mudou para Asiko, lançando um disco em cada fase. Posto aqui o último, lançado na Alemanha e composto por 9 curtas faixas de afro funk competente e típico da época. Destaca-se uma mescla equilibrada entre vocais e coros (em inglês e língua local) e instrumental marcado pelo forte trabalho na percussão, guitarra wah-wah e metais. Ótimo exemplo de afro funk setentista, recomendado para fãs do estilo.

CD reissue from the much in demand album 'Take a trip with Asiko', by this obscure nigerian group Asiko, originally out on Gorilla Records. Most of the tracks are quite percussive, with funky wah wah’s and a strong horn section, and in general, the sound is very much influenced by american funk (check for example ‘Love and peace’, instrumentally, almost an African version to James Brown’s ‘Hot Pants’). Huge tip!

O grupo Aktion surgiu no começo dos anos 70 com o nome Action 13, lançando neste primeiro momentos dois compactos e anos mais tarde, já usando seu nome definitivo, outros dois LPs. Apesar de certo sucesso local, fazendo shows pela região, a banda se desfez e alguns de seus membros se juntaram ao The Stormmers e One World.
Groove the Funk é o primeiro álbum dos caras, lançado em 1975 pela Clover. É composto por 9 faixas, maioria curtas, que trazem um primoroso trabalho baseado na mescla de afrobeat, funk e psicodelia, nos padrões da época. O trabalho instrumental é bem construído e empolgante, onde ouvimos a guitarra distorcida tomando frente, acompanhada pelo trabalho consistente de teclado, percussão e vocais sempre em inglês. Aktion was a band formed in Warri, in the southwest of Nigeria. The group emerged in the early 70s under the name Action 13, recorded two singles in that moment and years later, already using its definitive name, two LPs. Despite some local success, touring in the region, the band disbanded and some of its members joined The Stormmers and One World later.
"Groove the Funk" is their first album, released in 1975 by Clover. It consists of 9 tracks, most short, bringing a great work based on afrobeat, funk and psychedelia, following many local bands. The instrumental work is well constructed and exciting, where we hear fuzz guitar, accompanied by consistent keyboard, percussion and vocals (always in English). As for the tracks, the best are "Groove the Funk", "Sugar Daddy" and "Masquerade", despite a few weak moments. Recommended for fans of Afro funk and rock.

Voices of Darkness foi uma banda formada em 1972 na cidade de Duala, em Camarões, pelo músico Joe Brown. Após um breve período de shows no país de origem foram para Lagos, na Nigéria, contando com alguns membros nigerianos e gravaram seu único e raro álbum. O grupo se desfez logo em seguida e permaneceu em total esquecimento até 2014, quando o LP foi relançado pela Superfly.
O homônimo de 1974 é composto por 7 faixas curtas e próprias, trazendo sonoridade típica da região na época, misturando estilos ocidentais como funk, rock e soul com ritmos regionais (afrobeat). Reflexo disso é o instrumental agitado e com boas passagens de órgão, guitarra, saxofone, percussão e timbales. Voices of Darkness was a band formed in 1972 in the city of Douala, in Cameroon, by the musician Joe Brown. After a brief period of concerts in the country of origin they moved to Lagos, Nigeria, with some Nigerian members and recorded their unique and rare album. The group disbanded soon after and remained in oblivion until 2014, when the LP was reissued by Superfly.
The self-titled of 1974 consists of 7 short and original tracks, bringing typical sound of the region at the time, mixing Western styles like funk, rock and soul with regional rhythms (afrobeat). A reflection of this is the cheerful instrumental and with good passage of organ, guitar, saxophone, percussion and timbales. The songs are sung in three languages, English, Ewondo (local language) and French (in the "Bonjour Cherie" ballad). Highlighting for "We Gonna Make It", "Mota Ginya" and "We Are Origins Of Africa", despite being consistent.

Pérola obscura vinda da Nigéria, formada em meados dos anos 70. Bob Ohiri & His Uhuru Sounds começou após a saída dos guitarrista Bob e Shegun Ilori do "King Sunny Ade & His African Beats", lançando um único álbum em 1976 (outros sites dizem que é de 1985, talvez ano de um relançamento). Além dos dois um outro músico conhecido como Prince é listado.
Uhuru Aiye é uma viagem pelos subterrâneos do rock setentista na África, dividida em 7 faixas, maioria curtas. Classificar esse disco é uma difícil missão, pois ouvimos influências de afrobeat, rock psicodélico e jazz funk, massivamente instrumental com percussão e guitarra wah-wah hipnotizantes liderando, além de alguns instrumentos locais, saxofone e órgão em raros momentos. As letras aparecem em iorubá e inglês, em 2 músicas.
Uma das melhores surpresas vindas do rico repertório afrobeat/ rock africano, pérola recomendada!

Obscure gem coming from Nigeria, formed in the mid-70s. Bob Ohiri & His Uhuru Sounds began after the guitarists Bob and Shegun Ilori left "King Sunny Ade & His African Beats", releasing one album in 1976 (other sites say that is 1985, perhaps a year re-release). Another musician known as Prince is listed.
"Uhuru Aiye" is a journey through the underground rock of the Seventies in Africa, divided into seven tracks, most short. Rate this disk is a difficult mission because we hear influences of afrobeat, psychedelic rock and jazz, funk massively instrumental with hypnotizing percussion and wah-wah guitar leading, plus some local instruments, saxophone and organ in rare moments. Lyrics appear in Yoruba and two songs in English.
One of the best surprises coming from the rich repertoire afrobeat / African rock, highly recommended!

Pérola formada na região de Lagos, na Nigéria por jovens em meados dos anos 70. O grupo Tirogo lançou um único disco em 1977, relançado algumas vezes recentemente em pequena tiragem. Na verdade pouco mais há mais disponível sobre o quinteto.
O álbum Float é composto por 6 faixas curtas inspiradas em bandas locais como Ofege, Blo, Question Mark e Zam rock, misturando rock psicodélico e pegadas de funk com ritmos africanos. Músicas simples, dominadas por guitarra fuzz nervosa, com bons momentos de órgão, percussão e vocais típicos do continente, com letra em inglês falando sobre temas como garotas, músicas e religião marcam o som.
Nada de essencial, mas boa pérola para fãs de rock psicodélico e africano.

Tirogo is one of these Nigerian psych-rock bands from a same level as the other bands which had been reissued before. The songs and song tunes sung in English are somewhat simple, a foundation, one of them is sung in not such a perfect way, the whole musical element completely compensates for this and completes this to an attractive psychedelic rock format. There's use of a little bit of keyboards to fill up the arrangements with another layer, it is the groovy electric guitar solos which are given a time and which are given a trippy freedom which gives this something special in combination with the attractive Afro-inspired rock song rhythms. Just here and there is a funky touch, without ever being dominant. A decent African rock record within the psychedelic territory.

Pérola vinda da Nigéria, o grupo Question Mark foi formado em Lagos por jovens influenciados pelo rock'n'roll feito na Europa/ EUA. Apesar de certo impacto local na metade dos anos 70, a banda lançou um único disco em 1974, gravado no Quênia, mas na época não conseguiu êxito comercial e causou o fim do grupo. Com recentes relançamentos da Shadoks e Now Again, o Question Mark tem ganhado novos admiradores pelo mundo.
O álbum Be Nice to the People é dividido em 8 faixas curtas, trazendo típico e simples "afro rock", com fortes influências de rock psicodélico e funk dos anos 60/70 feito em Inglaterra e EUA e ainda momentos de música típica da região, lembrando outros conterrâneos como Ofege. Destaque maior fica com passagens furiosas de guitarra fuzz, órgão "martelando" e ainda percussão, como nas faixas "Have You?", "Freaking Out" e "Scram Out". As letras são todas em inglês, com maioria das letras falando sobre paixões e outros temas adolescentes, com alguns momentos mais fracos em baladas acústicas.

Finalizo mais uma série sobre obscuridades da África com essa pérola vinda de Benin City, na Nigéria. O grupo The Black Hippies surgiu em meados dos anos 70 e lançaram dois raros álbuns em 1976 e 78, ambos relançados recentemente. O segundo e último, que posto aqui, vem com o nome de Pazy And The Black Hippies, fazendo referência ao líder e guitarrista Pazy Etina.
O álbum Wa Ho Ha traz 7 curtas faixas que misturam rock psicodélico, funk, afrobeat e alguns momentos de reggae! Guitarra fuzz domina o instrumental, muito bem entrosada com passagens de percussão, sax, trompete e órgão, outro ponto de destaque é o vocal de Pazy, que pode não agradar a todos, mas mistura de forma única o inglês com alguns gritos e cânticos na língua local.
Mais uma ótima pérola, recomendado para fãs de rock psicodélico, afrobeat e funk.

Pearl coming from Benin City, Nigeria. The group Black Hippies emerged in the mid-'70s and released two rare albums in 1976 and 78, both recently reissued. The second and last one, that I post here comes with the name Pazy and the Black Hippies, referring to the leader and guitarist Pazy Etina. 
The album Wa Ho Ha brings 7 short tracks that mix psychedelic rock, funk, afrobeat and a few moments of reggae! Fuzz guitar dominates the instrumental, with fine passages of percussion, sax, trumpet and organ, another highlight is the vocal Pazy, may not please everyone, but an only way mixing English with some cheers and chants in local language. Another great pearl, recommended for fans of psychedelic rock, funk and afrobeat.

Pérola obscura formada em meados dos anos 70 na Nigéria, por estudantes de Lagos. O grupo Survival lançou um único e raro LP em 1977, esquecido no tempo e relançado somente no começo de 2014 pela Strawberry Rain, também em LP e com 1000 cópias. Aos poucos a história e o som da banda começam a ser redescobertos.
O álbum Simmer Down não "foge à regra" do rock africano dos anos 70. É composto por 8 curtas faixas que mesclam música típica da região, com bastante percussão, congas, flauta e coros e música ocidental, com destaque para rock psicodélico cru, com forte presença de guitarra fuzz e órgão, e ainda funk/soul. As músicas são em inglês.
Pérola recomendada para fãs de rock africano e psicodélico.

Obscure pearl formed in the mid-70s in Nigeria, by students of Lagos. The group Survival released a single and rare LP in 1977, only relaunched in early 2014 by Strawberry Rain. The album Simmer Down is similar to African '70s rock. It is composed of 8 short tracks that mix typical music of the region, full of percussion, congas, flute and choirs and western music, especially psychedelic rock, with strong presence of fuzz guitar and organ, and even funk / soul. Outra pérola vinda da África, esse som veio da Nigéria. O grupo Colomach foi formado em meados da década de 70 em Lagos e lançaram um único e raro álbum em 1974, com número baixíssimo de cópias e que só foi relançado em 2013, também pela Soundaway. A banda teve algumas músicas presentes em recentes compilações como The World Ends e Nigeria Rock Special.
O álbum homônimo traz 10 faixas curtas e bastante similares ao rock que se fazia na África dos anos 70, rock de garagem com pesadas influencias de rock psicodélico, zam rock e afrobeat, além da música tradicional feita na região. A guitarra fuzz domina, junto com boas passagens de percussão tradicional e bateria. As letras são todas na língua local, dando ainda mais singularidade a este registro.
Pérola recomendada para quem gosta de rock psicodélico africano.

Pearl coming from Nigeria. The group Colomach was formed in the mid-70s in Lagos and launched a unique and rare album in 1974, with a very low number of copies and was only reissued in 2013, by Soundaway.
The eponymous album features 10 short tracks and quite similar to the rock that was in Africa 70s, garage rock with heavy influences from psychedelic, zam rock and afrobeat beyond traditional music made in the region. The fuzz guitar dominates, along with good passages of traditional percussion and drums. The lyrics are all in the local language, giving even more uniqueness to this record.

PSYCHEDELIC/ AFRICAN ROCK - VARIOUS - The World Ends: Afro Rock & Psychedelia in 1970s Nigeria - 2010

The World Ends é uma coletânea lançada em 2010 pela Soundway Records em 2 CDs (e também vinil), reunindo mais de 30 pérolas nigerianas na década de 1970. Essa coletânea mostra muito bem o "cenário" do rock no país durante o período, logo após o fim da Guerra Civil, que devastou a Nigéria. Os grupos aqui presentes vieram de todas as partes do país e muitos gravaram apenas um ou dois singles, tendo também uma carreira curta.
Como já diz o título da coletânea: Afro Rock & Psychedelia in 1970s Nigeria, o rock psicodélico e ácido, influência de bandas americanas e inglesas, predominam, contando ainda com muitas presença da música e ritmos africanos, principalmente o Highlife e o Afrobeat; funk e soul também aparecem, principalmente no segundo CD. Guitarra fuzz se destaca em praticamente todas as faixas; já teclado, órgão e percussão também aparecem bem em alguns momentos. Algumas músicas são em inglês, outras na língua local, já algumas instrumentais.
Ótima coletânea, cheia de pérolas de qualidade, recomendada para quem gosta de boa psicodelia!

Pérola vinda de Lagos, na Nigéria, o Ofege foi formado por jovens no começo da década de 70 e é mais um exemplo de rock psicodélico da "África Negra" da época. O grupo lançou  vários álbuns durante a década de 70, posto aqui o primeiro: Try and Love, de 1973, que foi relançado também pela Academy LPs em 2009, em CD e vinil.
O som desse registro traz como principal influência o rock psicodélico americano, sem deixar de lado o ritmo e a música africana. A guitarra fuzz domina todo o instrumental, o órgão também tem bons momentos. O vocal de Melvin "Noks" Ukachi, na minha opinião, é o ponto ruim do disco, não combinando com o som dos caras, as músicas são todas em inglês.
Psicodelia poderosa, pérola recomendada para fãs de rock psicodélico e afro rock.

The group released several albums during the '70s, I post here the first: Try and Love, of 1973, which was also reissued by Academy LPs in 2009 on CD and vinyl.
The sound of this record brings as the main influence American psychedelic rock, without neglecting the rhythm and African music. The fuzz guitar dominates all instrumental, the organ Hammond also has good moments. The vocal of Melvin "Noks" Ukachi, in my opinion, is the bad point of the disc, not matching with the sound, the songs are all in English.
Powerful psychedelia, Pearl recommended for fans of psychedelic and african roc
