Comentário: Tirando a poeira aqui do blog com uma pérola que há vários anos está na minha lista de desejos após escutar uma única e excelente canção deste misterioso álbum. Pouco se sabe sobre a história deste artista e apenas recentemente o disco completo foi disponibilizado pela internet. Não é sabido se Delta Slim foi realmente um músico ou apenas pseudônimo e até mesmo qual sua nacionalidade. O único nome vinculado na contracapa é de 'Sep Shank', que na verdade é o britânico John O'Brien-Docker, músico e compositor que fez carreira na cena krautrock alemã dos anos 70.

O disco Delta Blues, lançado exclusivamente na Alemanha pelo selo Auditon em número mínimo de cópias e até hoje nunca relançado, nos brinda com 10 faixas do mais puro blues rock ao estilo de grandes bandas da época e algumas mais puxadas para o blues convencional e arrastado. O vozeirão predomina com um inglês sem sotaques, fazendo desconfiar que se trata de algum artista alemão, e no instrumental o protagonismo é dividido entre guitarra afiada, piano e gaita de boca. Difícil apontar algum destaque entre as canções, pois é um trabalho bem sólido e que desce bem ao longo dos seus quase 40 minutos, mas deixo "Bad News", "I Think Someone Was Lyin'", "Lucy" e a versão do clássico "House Of The Risin' Sun".

Com certeza uma boa pedida para os fãs de blues elétrico, tanto pela qualidade quanto raridade do registro.

This album has been on my wish list for several years and only recently it was made available on the internet. Little is known about this artist if Delta Slim was actually a musician or just a pseudonym and even what his nationality was. The only name linked on the back cover is 'Sep Shank', who is actually British musician and songwriter John O'Brien-Docker, who made a career in the German krautrock scene of the 1970s.

The album Delta Blues, released exclusively in Germany by the label Auditon bring 10 tracks of the blues rock in the style of great bands of the time and some more pulled towards the conventional and blues. In the instrumental the protagonism is divided between good solos of guitar, piano and harmonica. It is difficult to point out any highlight among the songs, as it is a very solid work with few bad moments, but "Bad News", "I Think Someone Was Lyin'" and the version of the classic "House Of The Risin' Sun" are my favorites. Definitely a good choice for electric blues fans, both for the quality and rarity of the record.

Comentário: Grupo formado em Tigard, Oregon, em 1969 por amigos ex-membros de outras bandas menores na época, e apesar de não terem lançado nenhum álbum durante seus cinco anos de atividades, ganhou certa notoriedade local pelas performances no palco. Gravaram um álbum em 74, que só foi lançado quase 40 anos depois e estas gravações ao vivo que recuperadas e lançadas de forma não oficial, que posto aqui.
Este Live contém 26 músicas, gravadas entre 1972 e 73, muitas delas longas jams instrumentais, bebendo diretamente da fonte hippie que avassalou o país no fim dos anos 60, presença de altas doses ácidas e psicodélicas, intercaladas com canções mais curtas que possuem vocal e pegada mais country, blues e até baladas. Há diversidade de instrumentos, com arranjos dinâmicos e solos acirrados de guitarras, flauta, órgão, além de cozinha afiada, como manda a cartilha setentista. A qualidade não é das melhores, porém ainda impressionam pela idade e não serem de estúdio.
Prato cheio para fãs de rock setentista bem executado e espontâneo. Vale a audição!

A group formed in Tigard, Oregon, in 1969 by friends formem members of other bands at the time, and although they did not release any album during their five years of activities, they had some local notoriety for the performances on the stage. They recorded an album in '74, which was only released almost 40 years later and these live recordings that have been retrieved and unofficially released.
This Live contains 26 songs, recorded between 1972 and 73, many of them long spontaneous instrumental jams, directly influenced by 60's hippie acid and psychedelic rock, interspersed with shorter songs that have vocal and some country, blues and even ballads. There are a diversity of instruments, with dynamic arrangements and fierce solos of guitars, flute, organ, as well as great kitchen. The quality is not the best, but they still impress with age and not as a studio tape.

Comentário: Músico nascido no Mississipi em 1923, que começou sua carreira nos anos 40 nos estados do sul dos EUA após aprender a tocar gaita sozinho na infância. Perdeu um braço em 1958, se estabelecendo em Chicago após o acidente, quando passou a tocar na rua Maxwell e acompanhando outros músicos, quando conseguiu contrato para gravar seu próprio LP. Veio a falecer em 1977, lançando mais um derradeiro álbum dois anos antes.
O debut é uma típica obra de 'Electric Blues' / Blues Rock, que se popularizou na mesma década, graças a grandes nomes do gênero, como Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson e Little Walter, porém sem deixar de lado as raízes do Chicago Blues. Conta apenas com o apoio simples da bateria e guitarra, que acompanham o lamento da protagonista harmônica e do vozeirão rasgado de Wrencher. Sendo um disco bem executado e sólido, poucos momentos ficam abaixo do bom. Prato cheio para todos os blueseiros de plantão.

While most blues albums bear romantic-sounding titles like the one used here, this is the real deal. Wrencher's one-armed amplified harp playing is perfectly supported by the lone guitar of Little Buddy Scott and the bar-bones basic drumming of Playboy Vinson. Listing titles is superfluous, since the feel and the ambience is the important thing. But blues albums seldom capture that elusive quality the way it is here, and that's the secret of its charm. Superlative in every regard, this is a great album by a very under-recorded artist.

Este é seu único álbum solo, todo voltado ao blues rock, acompanhado por um competente time de músicos. Dividido em 8 faixas, sendo a primeira metade (lado A) composições próprias e outras covers de clássicos do estilo. O som é típico, com protagonismo das guitarras, além de gaita, piano e vocais em inglês, variando momentos mais arrastados e outros dinâmicos. Destaque para "Blues Ain't Bad", "Breakfast Blues", "C.C. Rider" e "Stormy Monday Blues".
Nada de essencial para o estilo, mas ainda recomendado para blueseiros de plantão.

Comentário: Banda formada em 1974 na cidade de Plzeň, antiga Checoslováquia. Apesar de certas restrições pelas autoridades da época, o trio sempre se manteve na ativa, lançando vários LPs e ganhando fama local, hoje tendo apenas Oldřich Říha da formação original.
Posto aqui o debut, gravado ao vivo na capital Praga, dividido em 10 faixas de hard rock, não devendo nada aos grandes nomes do gênero no leste europeu, como Bijelo dugme e YU Grupa. As letras são todas em tcheco e o instrumental é simples, direto e sólido, com domínio das guitarras em riffs e solos marcantes, acompanhadas por boa bateria / baixo e gaita de boca, que garante uma sonoridade mais 'blueseira' em algumas músicas.

Band formed in 1974 in the city of Plzeň, former Czechoslovakia. Despite some restrictions by the authorities of the time, the trio always remained active, releasing several LPs and gaining local fame, now having only Oldřich Říha of the original line-up.

Here is the debut, recorded live in the capital Prague, divided into 10 tracks of hard rock, owing nothing to the big names of the genre in Eastern Europe, like Bijelo dugme and YU Grupa. The lyrics are all in Czech and the instrumental is simple, straightforward and solid, with great guitar work in striking riffs and solos, accompanied by good drums / bass and harmonica, guaranteeing a more 'bluesy' sound in some songs.

Comentário: Projeto de dois artistas que desde o início dos anos 60 participavam de pequenos grupos de blues da cena holandesa, ambos com outros LPs solos lançados, porém quase desconhecidos nos dias atuais. Dividido em 13 covers de clássicos das décadas de 40 e 50, há uma distinção clara entre os lado A e B. O primeiro (indo até 'Boogie Woogie Stomp') trata-se de piano blues / boogie woogie totalmente instrumental; animado e rápido, onde os irmãos Mark e Robert Jansen fazem um grande trabalho. Já no lado que fecha o disco, ouvimos um country blues arrastado e tradicional; Varekamp surge com seu vocal melancólico e marcante, influenciado pelas grandes vozes femininas do estilo, acompanhada pela corneta e piano.

Certamente uma pérola que agradará fãs do bom e velho blues! Recomendado!

Project of two artists who participated of small blues groups of the Dutch scene since early '60s, both with other solo LPs released, but almost unknown today. Divided into 13 covers of '40s and '50s classics , there is a clear distinction between the A and B sides. The first (going until 'Boogie Woogie Stomp') is all instrumental piano blues / boogie woogie; animated and fast, where brothers Mark and Robert Jansen do a great job. On the side that closes the disc, we hear a traditional country blues; Varekamp appears with her melancholy and outstanding vocal, influenced by the great feminine voices of the style, accompanied by the cornet and piano.

Certainly a gem that will please fans of good and old blues! Recommended!

Comentário: Matthew Tilders, mais conhecido como Dutch Tilders, foi um guitarrista nascido na Holanda, mas ainda jovem mudou-se com a família para Melbourne, onde construiu toda sua carreira na música. É dono de uma longa discografia, além de parceria e tours com grandes nomes do rock, como John Mayall, infelizmente vindo a falecer em 2011.

Este é seu debut, lançado pela Bootleg e que se mantem desconhecido por muitos. Tratam-se de 14 faixas curtas e com dois lados bastante distintos, na parte A são canções inspiradas pelo blues e boogie rock, incluindo versões de Arthur Crudup e Jimmy Reed, acompanhado por membros do grupo local Chain. Enquanto no lado B ouvimos um blues acústico e arrastado, executado todo pelo músico, na presença de sua guitarra e violão, novamente com grandes momentos.

Uma belíssima obra para fãs de blues, seja tradicional ou elétrico. Altamente recomendado!

Tilders’ debut solo album Dutch Tilders proved the man’s mastery of the blues form. One side featured Tilders playing Chicago electric blues with backing provided by members of Chain and the flip was just the man doing down-home Mississippi delta acoustic blues.

There are many fine moments across the man’s records but I particularly enjoy this self-titled debut. On the electric side you can tell it’s just a really relaxed session with Dutch and the guys from Chain doing what they know best. Nothing is overplayed (there are no searing blues-rock work-outs with screaming guitars) and Tilders’ vocal delivery is laconic yet spot-on. Phil Manning’s guitar work is always a joy to hear and while singer / songwriter Brian Cadd was enjoying his own successful solo career at the time, his boogie-woogie piano accompaniment is totally sympathetic to the cause and a real highlight.

Tilders matches his own composition ‘Chimney-Sweep Blues’ with covers of Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup’s ‘That’s Alright Mama’, Jimmy Reed’s ‘Wee Wee Baby’ and Jimmie Cox’s ‘Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out’. Tilders’ affinity with the blues has never been fully examined to my knowledge; however he definitely knew his blues history.

On the acoustic side, the highlights include covers of ‘It Hurts Me Too’, ‘Kansas City Blues’, ‘In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down’ and Big Bill Broonzy’s ‘Southbound Train’ and ‘Keys to the Highway’. Aside from Tilders’ vocals and acoustic guitar (with a side order of slide) the only other musical accompaniment heard is Broderick Smith’s mouth organ on ‘Kansas City Blues’.

Neste segundo disco, dividido em 14 curtas faixas, ouvimos uma boa mescla de boogie, blues e country rock, típico da época. A guitarra guia o instrumental, com riffs e solos marcantes, acompanhada por piano, metais, gaita e percussão. Destaque para "Too True Mama", "Oh What A Feeling",  "Murder In The First Degree" e "Mountain Fire", apesar de ser uma obra consistente.

Comentário: Primeiro disco deste grupo vindo de Johor Bahru, na Malásia (não confundam com a banda grega de mesmo nome) e que lançou vários trabalhos nos anos seguintes, conseguindo certo destaque local. O debut, composto por 10 curtas faixas, revela-se surpreendente para um país com pouca tradição no estilo, captando de forma muito competente o blues rock típico da década de 70. O instrumental é equilibrado, onde ouvimos solos de guitarra e harmônica se revezando em quase todos os momentos, além de passagens certeiras de metais, piano e todos os vocais em inglês. 

Com certeza um dos melhores exemplos de blues rock vindo da Ásia no período, recomendado!

First record of this group from Johor Bahru, Malaysia (do not confuse with the Greek band with same name) and that released several records in the following years, achieving some local success. The debut, composed of 10 short tracks, shows a well-played and surprising typical blues rock of the 70's for a country with little tradition in style. The instrumental is balanced, where we hear electric guitar and harmonica solos taking turns in almost all times, as well as good passages of metals, piano, and all lyrics in English.

Certainly one of the best examples of blues rock from Asia in the period, recommended!

Comentário: Pouco ou quase nada se sabe sobre este músico americano, que aparentemente lançou apenas este raríssimo álbum em 1972 (o ano de gravação pode ser anterior) e, segundo relatos, era próximo de nomes como Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell e Reverendo Gary Davis. No LP ouvimos 10 ótimas versões de canções tradicionais do blues, seguindo principalmente country e delta blues. É marcado pela produção cru, com vocal rasgado e muito uso de gaita de boca, slide guitar e violões.

Prato cheio para admiradores de blues tradicional, recomendado!

Little or nothing is known about this American musician, who apparently released only this rare album in 1972 (the year of recording is uncertain) and was close to names like Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Reverend Gary Davis. In the LP we hear 10 great versions of traditional blues songs, following mainly country and delta blues. It is marked by raw production, with rough vocals and use of harmonica, slide and acoustic guitars. Highly recommended for traditional blues fans!

Neste LP, que conta com presença dos membros de sua banda na época, Company Caine, ouvimos uma mescla tanto quanto incomum de blues, country, psicodelia, progressivo e boogie rock. No instrumental há um equilíbrio entre passagens dinâmicos e agitadas e outras baladas acústicas, com presença de saxofone, guitarra, piano, percussão e violões, acompanhando o vocal de Gulliver. Recomendo a audição e que façam suas conclusões.

Only solo album released by Australian singer Gulliver Smith, present in several local groups since early 60s until his death in 2014. In this LP, with all members of his band at the time, Caine Company, we hear a unusual mix of blues, country, psychedelia, progressive and boogie rock. In instrumental there is a balance between dynamic and agitated passages and other acoustic ballads, with the presence of saxophone, guitar, piano, percussion and acoustic guitars, accompanying the Gulliver's vocal. I recommend hearing and draw your conclusions.

Comentário: Um dos discos mais raros vindos da Argentina, único lançado pela banda Thabata após vencer uma competição na TV local. Curto e dividido em 7 faixas, o álbum traz um som bastante próximo do que estava sendo feito no país na época, mesclando hard rock, blues e psicodelia de forma cru, com guitarras barulhentas e distorcidas, sax e flauta sempre presentes e baixo pulsante. O vocal é todo em espanhol e o ponto ruim é a qualidade da gravação, um pouco precária.

Pérola recomendada para fãs de rock argentino e hard/ blues em geral.

One of the rarest records from Argentina, only album released by the band Thabata after winning a competition on local TV. Short and divided into seven tracks, the album features a sound very close to what was being done in the country at the time, mixing hard rock, blues and psychedelia in raw form, with noisy and distorted guitars, sax and flute always present and pulsating bass. The vocals are all in Spanish and bad point is the quality of the recording, a little precarious. Recommended for Argentine rock fans and hard / blues in general.

Comentário: Como o próprio título do CD indica, esta é uma banda formada por roadies do Allman Brothers entre 1973 e 74, que gravaram material próprio na época e que só foi lançado quatro décadas depois. Divido em 10 faixas, sendo metade covers e outras instrumentais, o disco traz uma mescla equilibrada de blues, jam e southern rock, onde ouvimos músicos competentes e boas melodias, lideradas pela dobradinha entre piano e guitarras. 

Obra consistente e cercada de história interessante, recomendado para fãs de southern e blues rock.

On one hand, the vibe of A Band Of Roadies comes as no surprise: after all, the band comprised members of the Allman Brothers Band’s road crew circa ’73-’74, along with some other players from the Macon, GA music scene at the time. This mix of covers and originals – infused with bluesy, jazzy grooves and adventurous jams – is exactly what you might expect from offshoots of the ABB family. What is a pleasant surprise, however, is the fact that this is a great album made by some solid players. After all, just because they lugged the Allmans’ gear, it doesn’t guarantee they could play it, but A Band Of Roadies stands on its own hind legs as a cool chunk of early 70s bluesrock recently rediscovered. (...) All in all, A Band Of Roadies is a great listen, regardless of the Allman connection. The fact that this music was created from a mix of service to the job at hand and a passion for the music that surrounded them makes the story of the Almost Brothers one that causes you to smile and shake your head.
