Comentário: Pianista filipino que ficou conhecido como pioneiro na influência de ritmos brasileiros na cena local, lançando 3 álbuns durante os anos 70, enquanto estava na casa dos 20 anos e acompanhado de seu grupo 'Batucada'. Na década seguinte o artista continuou tocando em excursões pela Ásia, porém sem novos materiais. 
Posto aqui seu segundo disco, composto de 10 faixas, maioria curtas, e que trazem uma forte influência dos ritmos bossa nova e samba jazz e nomes como Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, entre outros. O som é dinâmico, pulsante e sofisticado, com belas variações instrumentais, onde destaca-se o piano de Peñera, mas também o trabalho rítmico e nas cordas. Os vocais são femininos e masculinos e também merecem ênfase, sendo todas as letras em inglês.
Interessante registro para apreciadores da música brasileira, por ser feita por músicos a mais de 20000 km de distância, recomendado!

The Batucada is probably the only jazz group that could remain a trio and still retain the sound of a full band. It’s a tease in a way and its diminutive size has baffled many. It plays music that is versatile, universal and certainly rhythmic. Of all the elements that make up the art we know as music, the most fundamental is rhythm. The pulse, the beat—this is the foundation of it all, natural and inevitable, growing our of life itself. The cycle of night and day, the turning seasons of the years, the beat of one’s heart, the steady pace of one’s footsteps" these things are always with us, we are surrounded by rhythm. Thus explains Bong as he points out the particular adherence to the Brazillian idiom and as to why he chose the name "Batucada" which means "beat." Their music is just it –pulsating, never giving too much of forcing too much, sometimes aggressive, sometimes funky, or soulful and seasoned with sophistication and a case definitely beyond their years. There is depth but not the kind that is confined to the intellectual alone, and there is the dynamic creativity evident in their performances: not one piece is repeated exactly the same as it was first played.

Pérola vinda de Olongapo, nas Filipinas, formada em meados dos anos 70 pelos irmãos Resty e Jun Fabunan. Apesar do sucesso e influência na cena local, o trio Maria Cafra é pouco conhecida fora do país e teve apenas um raro álbum lançado em 1978. O grupo se desfez de forma inesperada no começo da década seguinte, porém recentes reuniões e shows ocorrem na região.
O disco homônimo traz 11 curtas faixas e típicas do "Pinoy Rock", misturando hard rock direto com algumas baladas mais comerciais, tudo isso cantada em língua local. O instrumental é simples e guiado pela guitarra, que traz os melhores momentos a obra, acompanhada por bateria e baixo, apesar de nada de inovador. Quanto as faixas destaque para "Kumusta, Mga Kaibigan", "Karanasan" e "Theme for Exodus".
Nada de essencial, porém interessante para quem curte ou quem conhecer o Pinoy Rock.

Maria Cafra was a trio from Olongapo, Philippines, formed in the mid-70s by the brothers and Resty and Jun Fabunan. Despite the success and influence in the local scene, the band is little known outside the country and had only released a rare album in 1978. 
The self-titled album is divided in 11 short tracks typical of "Pinoy Rock", mixing straight hard rock with some more commercial ballads, all sung in the local language. The instrumental is simple and guided by guitar, which brings the best moments to this work, accompanied by drums and bass, though nothing innovative. Best tracks are "Kumusta, Mga Kaibigan," "Karanasan" and "Theme for Exodus". Nothing essential, but interesting for those who enjoy Pinoy Rock.

Mike Hanopol é um músico, cantor e produtor nascido em Leyte, nas Filipinas. Começou sua carreira na música no final dos anos 60 em pequenas bandas locais até integrar o conhecido Juan de la Cruz Band, já na sua segunda formação e chegando a participar do segundo trabalho do Speed, Glue & Shinki. Já em carreira solo, lançou cinco álbuns, sendo considerado uma das maiores figuras do rock local.
Posto aqui seu segundo trabalho solo, de 1977, com presença do ex-companheiro de banda Wally Gonzales e baterista Edmund Fortuno. Buhay Musikero é composto por 8 faixas curtas, trazendo uma das mais interessantes obras do Pinoy Rock na época, combinando hard rock, pitadas de blues e psicodélico. O som é simples e direto, com excelente e barulhento trabalho nas guitarras, acompanhadas por baixo/ bateria e vocal rasgado de Hanopol (com letras em filipino e inglês), ouvimos também algumas baladas. Destaque para "Buhay Musikero", "Iron Gate",  "Circuit Rider" e "Blind Dog".

Mike Hanopol is a musician, singer and producer born in Leyte, Philippines. He began his career in music in the late '60s in small local bands until integrate known Juan de la Cruz Band (trio format) and participate in the second work of Speed, Glue & Shinki. Already in solo career, he released five albums and is considered one of the greatest figures of the local rock.
Post here his second solo effort, 1977, with presence of Wally Gonzales and drummer Edmund Fortuno. "Buhay Musikero" consists of 8 short tracks, bringing one of the most interesting works of Pinoy Rock at the time, combining hard rock, blues and psychedelic touches. The sound is simple and straightforward, with excellent and noisy guitars, accompanied by bass / drums and heavy Hanopol's vocals (with lyrics in Filipino and English), we also heard some ballads. Emphasis on "Buhay Musikero", "Iron Gate", "Circuit Rider" and "Blind Dog". Recommended for pinoy fans and hard rock seventies.

Atendendo a velhos pedidos, uma obscura banda vinda das Filipinas. O sexteto Abrakadabra foi formado provavelmente no fim dos anos 70 pelos irmãos Alex e Manuel "Jun" Mallilin, outros membros são desconhecidos (informações sobre o baterista Michael Ambas e guitarrista Vincent Gella não são precisas). Lançaram um único álbum em 1978 e tiverem certo sucesso local até o começo dos anos 80, com músicas como Bote-Dyaryo. Em 2012 foi relançado em CD, mas apenas localmente e com um bônus.
O homônimo é dividido em 11 curtas faixas, trazendo um som bastante influenciado por bandas de Pinoy rock, hard do fim dos anos 70, um pouco de glam (como podemos ver na capa) e comercial em vários momentos. O instrumental é simples e direto, com guitarra nervosa e bom trabalho de bateria e baixo; as letras são todas na língua local (com exceção da balada "Sweet Love") e tratam temas sociais e do dia-dia, segundo alguns sites.
Pérola recomendada para fãs de hard e especialmente pinoy rock.

By request, an obscure band coming from Philippines. The sextet Abrakadabra was probably formed in the late 70 by brothers Alex and Manuel "Jun" Mallilin, other members are unknown (information about the drummer Michael and guitarist Vincent Both Gella are not accurate). They released one album in 1978 and had some local success until the early 80s, with songs like Bote-Dyaryo. In 2012 it was re-released on CD, but only locally and with a bonus.
The self-titled is divided into 11 short tracks, bringing a sound heavily influenced by bands of Pinoy rock, late '70s hard, a little glam (as seen on the cover) and commercial music at various times. The instrument is simple and straightforward, with nervous guitar and good drums/bass work; the lyrics are all in the local language (expecting "Sweet Love") and talks about social and day by day issues, according to some sites.
Pearl recommended for fans of hard and especially pinoy rock.

Best of Pinoy Rock foi uma das primeiras compilações direcionadas ao rock feito nas Filipinas, o estilo conhecido como "Pinoy Rock", com influências de pop, blues, música típica e claro, rock'n'roll clássico. Esta coletânea foi lançada em 1983 pela Blackgold trazendo bandas e artistas conhecidos localmente como Juan de la Cruz e seus membros Pepe Smith e Wally Gonzales e outras pérolas que passaram despercebido na cena local.
As 12 músicas presentes são de 1973 até 79 e trazem várias influências, mas sendo as principais hard rock, blues e certas doses psicodélicas. No instrumental nada de diferente, competente bateria/ baixo e momentos de excelente trabalho nas guitarras, alternando com belas passagens acústicas com violão e piano. As letras são em inglês e filipino, dando um diferencial ao som. Destaque nas faixas de Wally Gonzales, Juan de la Cruz, Maria Cafra e Anak Bayan.

Best of Pinoy Rock compiles some of the best Philippine rock songs made in the 1970s by some of the country's best bands and solo artists. While the musical taste of the Philippines often gravitates to sugary, easy listening love songs, the music on Best of Pinoy Rock is some of the best rock to be found anywhere. Starting things off is Wally Gonzales' penetrating, blues-based guitar instrumental "Wally's Blues," a slow, emotive outing that starts on reverb-drenched electric guitar and then shifts to a cleaner sound. Maria Cafra's "Kumusta Mga Kaibigan" (How Are You Friend) is a rollicking, rock-inflected ditty, easily contagious to a listener. Joey Smith, a founding member of the legendary Juan Dela Cruz Band, comes up with an incisive rock ballad, "Summer Wind." His singing evokes memories of the Animals' Eric Burdon in that group's late-'60s psychedelic period. The biting guitar work here is excellent, too. The Juan Dela Cruz Band is represented by two excellent songs, the jump blues-influenced "No Touch" and the tender, acoustic "Himig Natin" (Our Voice). Sampaguita's "Tao" (People) is a well-known, pretty rock ballad. This collection should see an international release.

Pérola formada nas Filipinas no começo dos anos 70, na capital Manila. O grupo Anak Bayan contava com os músicos Bing Labrado e Alex Cruz, ambos da lendária banda Juan de la Cruz e baterista Edmond Fortuno, do D'Swooners. O grupo gravou várias músicas em 1973, mas que só foram lançadas em 1977 com número pequeno de cópias pela A & W e acabaram sendo o único registro da banda, se findando pouco tempo depois.
O disco homônimo de 77 traz um som conhecido como "Pinoy Rock", que nada mais é do que o rock feito no país, neste caso com altas doses psicodélicas e progressivas, mostrando influências de grandes grupos da época e alguns traços da música típica de lá. É dividido em 8 faixas, com momentos mais "hardeiros" e energéticos e algumas baladas soft rock ("Habang buhay" e "Laging May Kinabukassan"). Um ponto peculiar são as letras, na língua local (com exceção de "Double Crosser")  No instrumental, destaque para riffs e solos pesados de guitarra e algumas passagens interessantes de sax, flauta e teclado. As letras são todas na língua local (com exceção de "Double Crosser") e o vocal não agrada muito. Quanto as faixas, destaque para "Ang Probinsiyana", "Tayo'y Magasayaw" e a ótima "Bangungot", a la Jethro Tull.
Pérola recomendada para fãs de rock psicodélico, progressivo, hard e também rock de locais não "convencionais".

Anak Bayan was a band formed in the Philippines in the early '70s, with former members of Juan de la Cruz and D'Swooners. Recorded an album in 1973, but were only released in 1977 with a small number of copies by A&W. 
The self-titled album brings "Pinoy Rock", which is rock made in the country, in this case with high doses of psychedelic and progressive rock, showing influences of important groups of the time and some typical music. It's divided into 8 tracks, with some hard and soft moments. In instrumental, great solos and heavy riffs of guitar and some interesting passages sax, flute and keyboard, the lyrics are all in the local language (except for "Double Crosser"). Best tracks: "Ang Probinsiyana", "Tayo'y Magasayaw" and "Bangungot", a la Jethro Tull. Recommended for fans of psych/ prog rock.
