Comentário: Ja'afar Hassan (جعفر حسن) foi um músico e cantor iraquiano, nascido em 1944 na cidade de Khanaqin, região nordeste, e pertencente a etnia curda do país. Iniciou sua carreira nos anos 60 após estudar no conservatório de Bagdá e foi um dos artistas mais ligados à causa política local, principalmente o partido comunista, o que o levou ao exílio no final dos anos 70, após o estabelecimento do governo Saddam Hussein. Teve discografia relativamente extensa (não tenho informação do número exato), morando na Europa e no Iêmen, voltando ao seu país de origem em 2004, onde morou e seguiu carreira até sua morte, em 2021, por conta do covid-19.

Let's Sing Together é provavelmente seu primeiro LP, lançado de forma independente na Alemanha Oriental, onde foi gravado com músicos não revelados. O álbum é dividido em 12 curtas faixas que tem sua principal marca nas letras de cunho político, sendo todas cantadas em língua local (não sei se curdo ou árabe) e apesar de ser uma mescla de folk, rock de garagem e pop psicodélico ao estilo final dos anos 60, é um trabalho 'ousado' perante outros da região por propor uso apenas de instrumentos elétricos, sem presença de oud, cítara ou outros tradicionais. Destaque para algumas boas passagens combinadas de órgão e guitarra e às faixas "Once A Day", "They Taught Me" e "Front My Hope".

Vale a audição para admiradores de rock fora do eixo, com certeza um pedaço interessante da história musical e social iraquiana.

Ja'afar Hassan (جعفر حسن) was an Iraqi musician and singer, born in 1944 in the city of Khanaqin, northeast region, and belonging to the Kurdish ethnicity of the country. He began his career in the 1960s after studying at the Baghdad Conservatory and was one of the first local artists identified  with political cause, especially the communist party, which led him into exile in the late 1970s, after the establishment of Saddam Hussein's government. He had a relatively extensive discography (I have no information on the exact number), living in Europe and Yemen, returning to his country in 2004, where he lived and pursued a career until his death in 2021, due to covid-19.

"Let's Sing Together" is probably his first LP, released privately in East Germany, where it was recorded with unknown musicians. The album is divided into 12 short tracks that have strong political lyrics, all sung in the local language (I don't know if Kurdish or Arabic) and despite being a mix of folk, garage rock and psychedelic pop in the late 60's style, it is a still a unique work compared to others in the region for proposing the use only of electric instruments, without the presence of oud, zither or other traditional ones. Highlight for some good combined passages of electric organ and guitar and for the tracks "Once A Day", "They Taught Me" and "Front My Hope". Certainly an interesting piece of Iraqi musical and social history.

Comentário: Segundo disco deste cantor nascido em 1947 na cidade de Habbaniyah, sendo o último com a parceria da banda East Birds (composto aparentemente por músicos iraquianos e americanos). Sargon continua na ativa, lançando dezenas de álbuns ao longo das décadas e tendo sucesso local.

  Composto por 8 faixas, maioria curtas, a obra promove um dos primeiros encontros entre 'Assyrian folk' (música típica da região no Oriente Médio) e rock/ pop ocidental, principalmente por conta dos músicos de apoio, que garantem bons momentos no órgão e guitarra, apesar de ainda faltar certa ousadia e estarem presos no som dos anos 60, por isso ficando abaixo do disco do conterrâneo Al Basim. As letras são todas em língua local.

The second album of this singer born in 1947 in the city of Habbaniyah, the last one with the band East Birds (composed apparently by Iraqi and Americans musician). Sargon remains active, releasing dozens of albums over the decades and having local success. Composed of 8 tracks, most of them short, the work promotes one of the first encounters between 'Assyrian folk' (typical  arabic music) and western rock / pop, mainly because of the supporting musicians, who guarantee good moments in the organ and guitar, although they still lack a certain audacity and sound as 60's groups. The lyrics are all in local language.

REPOST: PROG/ JAZZ FUSION - AL BASIM - Revival - 1979

Repost do obscuro grupo Al Basim, a banda foi formada pelo guitarrista iraquiano Al Basim nos EUA, junto com outros músicos americanos, onde lançaram esse único álbum de forma independente em 1979, com apenas 500 cópias. Sem sucesso a banda logo se desfez e Al Basim voltou a trabalhar com música apenas nos anos 90 na França, onde lançou um CD com versões acústicas para músicas típicas do país onde nasceu.
O álbum Revival é dividido em 5 faixas de rock progressivo instrumentais e na maioria do tempo suave, com influências de música árabe, jazz fusion e um pouco de rock psicodélico. No instrumental a flauta (contando com um longo solo em "Souvenir")  e guitarra dominam, com participação de sax na última música, bem próxima ao free jazz. Destaque para "History of the World", "One Camel in Alaska" e "Open Space".
Pérola recomendada pra fãs de rock progressivo, jazz fusion e música árabe.

Obscure group Al Basim, band formed by Iraqi guitarist Al Basim in the U.S., along with other American musicians, where they released this one private album in 1979, with only 500 copies.
The album Revival is divided into 5 tracks of instrumental progressive rock, with influences of Arabic music, jazz fusion and a bit of psychedelic rock. In the instrumental, flute and guitar dominate, with sax in last song, very close to free jazz. Emphasis on "History of the World", "One Camel in Alaska" and "Open Space".  Pearl recommended to fans of progressive rock, jazz fusion and Arabic music.
